I arrived today, 26th August 2024 in Istanbul, just around 5 months after this video has been published and was surprised to see that the IstanbulKart price was double than that shown in this video, the price now is 130 TL. And price per trip on most means of transport is 20 TL. Indeed tha card can be shared by two persons. Maybe even more, don't know. I thought this update might help somebody.

Thanks for the info. For everyone BEWARE of SCAMS at ticket booths in certain stations. In my case I was almost scammed at a tram stop. I went to buy the card in one of the machines and a guy with a grey vest pretending to be an employee was in front of the machine and basically pressed the buttons for me. I paid then he wanted to keep the cards and take me to the entry which I told him not to and demanded the cards of him. He then smiled at me knowing he couldn’t take advantage of me. After looking online, other people said this scam works by then they passing the card at the entrance, letting you in and then handing you another card without balance. So the next time you touch on, you’ll have no credit and no way to fight back. Travel safe, is better to pass for rude than trust people here sadly😢

Heres something you may find interesting. :) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird 'turkey'...... .....but the name of the bird does have a connection with the name of my country, let me explain. :) In the past 40 years 37 countries have changed their name. Obviously one can not change the name of an apple or an orange etc in other languages, but country names are like peoples' individual names, so if you're named John we don't call you Karen. :) Name of my country has always been Türkiye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's. The name it self has a suffix, '-iye', that is Turk-iye, where the -iye suffix means 'land of/belonging to', just like the Latin suffix of '-ia', which exists in such country names like Austr-ia, Austral-ia, Indones-ia etc. Basically, the use of '-iye/-ia' is the same as the the use of '-land' suffix in country names like Ire(Eire)-land, Po(le)-land, Eng(Anglo)-land and so on and so on. Many would remember the country Czechoslovak-ia which changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). The Latin suffix -ia probably originates from Turkish -iye as Turkish been over 10,000 years is much older than Latin which is around 1300 years old. Spelled in different languages in different ways to phonetically resemble (to sound like) 'Türkiye' we got various spellings like; Turq-uía (in Spanish), Turch-ia (in Italian), Turq-uie (in French) Turk-ei (in German) Turk-ey (in English) Mind you this was way before the animal we currently know as turkey was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas. The bird was first sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so up until that point there was no bird named turkey.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird 'Turkey Fowl' to define 'Turkish Chicken'... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the harehound simply as Greek or you don't call the terrier Britirsh, or shepherd as simply German, but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just 'Turkey' and later 'turkey', and this went on for hundreds of years. Now in modern times, this caused confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their own country on an atlas. Basically we didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)

You are wrong! They changed it because the islamisists have such a giant inferiority complex that when they realized that in America , that people can use the word “Turkey” to mean something in a negative way, they thought they could mandate the world into changing their ways. I’m an English speaker. The proper pronunciation for the country is “Turkey”, not Türkiye. I always make sure that when I am speaking English in Turkey, I use the proper form - Turkey. When I am speaking Turkish I use the form - Türkiye. There is no mistake that we are making. We long ago decided we want to use the form Turkey. I kind of wonder if Turks would suddenly stop using the term Almanya for Germany if the Germans dictated that hence forth the world needed to use the term Deutschland. I don’t think so. The islamisists would feign indignation and say how dare the Germans try to interfere in how the Turks decided to identify certain people. More bs from a government that is filled with bs.

Thanks for watching! It is our understanding that you can use the Istanbul city card for the public bathrooms, but to be honest we have never one of these cards so we can’t verify that first hand. As far as the hop on hop off buses, that is a completely different private company… so it is not considered apart of the public transit system and it is not included with this card.

I don't think that you mention that if you take the Marmaray line that you have the full cost of a journey to the end of the line deducted when you touch in with the Istanbulkart but cannot get the refund, if you journey only a part of the way, at the refund machines when you touch out unless your card is registered, which, as a tourist, you are unlikely to do or even know how to do. I found this out to my cost! However I must say this is the clearest vieo on how to get this card and the pros and con compared to the City Card.

Am traveling soon to Istanbul and there are myriads of offers for "Skip the Line" tickets to Hagia Sophia and others. Many bloggers suggest getting the tickets ahead of time to various popular spots. Along the way of researching all this, I've also read that they are not necessary, a tourist hustle etc....because once you arrive at these locations they "Skip the Line" tickets are not honored and everyone gets in the same line anyway and that the only time they might save is having the ticket ahead of time to avoid two lines, one at the ticket booth and the other at the entrance. Should we be buying "skip the line" tickets or just buy entrance as we go? If you suggest we do buy the "skip the line" tickets, is there a site you would recommend? I know there's an Istanbul Pass but we're only there for a couple of days and the value isn't there for us. Thank you.

Hi I just bought your guide to Istanbul as will be visiting coming April. I wanted to ask why some entrance fees are in Euro while others are in TL? Would you recommend buying the Istanbul Pass? Thank you very much.
@WaypointofView8 ай бұрын
Over the past few months the entry fees have been shifting from Turkish lira prices to euro prices. We suspect this is because of the inflation the country has been experiencing, we update prices of the sites in our guide every month and in the past year they were being changed almost monthly to keep up with the inflation. We think they have started publishing them in euros so they won’t have to keep changing them. We might make a video about the entry fees next 😀! As for the Istanbul museum pass… not all sites are included in the pass and it is quite expensive so you need to look at what you plan to visit to see if it will make sense for you. We call out which sites are and which main sites are not included in our guide to help! I hope this helps!

Hello, Can the 10 pass ticket be used by two people and is it valid on the airport buses i.e Havaist/HVIST buses?
@WaypointofView8 ай бұрын
The 10 pass tickets can be used to scan in multiple people so each time you scan the card it counts as 1 of your 10 passes. If you scan 3 people onto a ferry, then that is 3 of 10. With the Havaist buses, the cost for 1 person is somewhere around 170TL (+\- depending on where you are going) so if you have an İstanbulkart with enough credit on it, I think they can scan the İstanbulkart to take your payment because it has an actual monetary balance on the card. I do not think that you can use the 10 pass ticket because the Havaist bus will want their full fair which is almost 10x a normal ride on public transit.. also I don’t believe there is a way to extract a set amount of money from the 10 pass tickets. I hope this helps!

That's good news. I got tired of buying a new card after every 500 TL. It used to be unlimited as I used one card for a couple of years.

Thanks for the update. We were stranded last year having hit the 500TL limit, that we did not know about at the time.

Here's a warning about Istanbul public transportation card. Some people hang around the machines and claim to assist you. They will convince you to use a credit card to buy a public transportation card. They quickly go through the menu and you bought a card loaded with 500 lira but the helper gives you a blank card. He then tells you that your new card needs to be loaded in order to be able to use it. You only find out you've been scammed once you check your credit card balance. Don't trust the "helpers" at the Istanbul public transportation card dispensing machines!!

Honestly no matter who it is we really only recommend getting the red İstanbulkart card 😂. You can use one for your whole family and don’t quote me on this but I think your 3 year old should be free…

You have to collect your documents and visit the nearest Istanbulkart Application Center to apply for and receive your Mavi Kart, OR Another way which is the fastest method to apply for the Mavi Kart online.

Hello. I am wondering if you can use a credit card (Visa) for public transport in Istanbul or if you have to buy their card (istanbulcard)
@joits8 ай бұрын
You have to buy their card.
@WaypointofView8 ай бұрын
You have to buy their card.. but at some machines you can use your credit card to buy the IstanbulKart :)

Honestly, it's a more informative video for Istanbul cards. Please give me some more information about the Istanbul kart. If I buy a '10 pass ticket' with 200 TL then can I use it for 2 people?
@WaypointofView7 ай бұрын
The IstanbulKart (the red one) is the one we talk about for the whole first half of the video. The 10 pass ticket you mentioned is something different and yes you can use it for 2 people. Have a great trip.

I’m arriving Istanbul and using TourIstanbul with Turkish Airlines. The Layover is 13 hours but the tour is just 3.5 hours. We want to extend it by a few hours so we won’t return to IST with the tour group. Should we return from Hagia Sofia by Metro or other? We are well travelled and know city Metro travel but want to make sure we return to the IST airport in time. What do you suggest? My preference is the Metro so traffic cannot delay us. Am I being rational for this city and its Metro?
@WaypointofView8 ай бұрын
If you have not already, you should watch our video about getting from Istanbul airport into the city center. In the video, my last leg is on the T1 tram line to Sirkeci which is about 2 stops (5 min) before Hagia Sophia which is at the Sultanahmet stop. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXezZGSbqcuKpdksi=jBya4tuUGOulernd That video will give you a really good idea of what your journey will look like in reverse from Hagia Sophia back to the airport. I would give yourself a minimum of 2 hours maybe more! The subway line to the airport only runs every 20 minutes so if you miss it by a minute or two it can cost you some serious time. But if you are needing to get to the airport around rush hour then I would definitely avoid buses or taxis

@@WaypointofView: Our tour of Hagia Sofia ends at 3:00pm. Flight leaves 6:35 pm. When leaving Hagia Sofia, what starting point Metro stop should I begin my return journey?
@WaypointofView8 ай бұрын
@@thomassalvi maybe I should clarify.. the minimum of 2 hours I mentioned initially is roughly the time it would take you to make the journey from Sultanahmet area to IST on public transit. If it were me… leaving there at 3pm for a 6:30 flight is cutting it too close 😅😳. Up to you of course but not something we would recommend.

@@WaypointofView Thank you for the advice. In April, on a Friday, can we just get tickets to get into Hagia Sofia? What are the limits? What do you recommend?

when traveling with the metro, do you have to validate your card between every line change?
@WaypointofView6 ай бұрын
You have to tap on with your card at every line change and you are charged as soon as you tap on. It doesn’t matter how long you take the ride. Certain public transit have different rates, but those rates are fixed no matter how long your ride is. The only exception to this is the Marmaray train where residents can use refund machines to get credit back… but that does not apply to tourists.
