Los Angeles's Old City Cemetery is gone, but large parts of it still exist at Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery. Come walk with me as we uncover a relic of LA's distant past.

One really neat aspect of this channel is it focuses on L.A history before Hollywood and the film industry arrived. Very few people seem to tell its early history and only focus on its motion picture history.

Well done my friend. I grew up in Los Angeles. And I thought I knew the history of it pretty well. But I had never heard the story before. I wish my mom was still alive so I could ask her about it. Because she's the one that passed down the history of the city to me.

I know what you mean. I've lived in L.A. and Orange County my whole life and was oblivious to it all until I started researching material for this channel. L.A. was once a city of hills. Thank you for commenting :)

Thanks for your note. Was born in the San Diego Navy hospital 1943, and, have lived in Huntington Beach for 28 years currently. We were very lucky to have been here all that time now compared to other parts of the country.

Boyle Heights also has Odd Fellows Cemetery on Whittier blvd. My grandfather is buried there. I've always been curious about the 'Woodsmen of America' and their signature Tree Stump headstones. Also Ronald Reagan spoke there during the burial of the thousands of dead infants that were discovered as abortions. Odd Fellows Cemetery donated land for the massive mass burials there. It would be an interesting video for you to make and im near by if you need help. I love your videos.
@graveexplorations6 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for watching and commenting. I have long planned on visiting the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Boyle Heights, stay tuned. The Woodsmen headstones you mentioned are very distinctive, and I've seen them across the country. Actually they were offered by the Woodsmen of the World (Not the Modern Woodsmen of America - both organizations were founded by the same man and have similar business models but are not affiliated with one another). My video on Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL gives a little background on them. Basically they were a fraternal benefit society that sold life insurance and annuities. Up until the early 1930's, the Woodsmen of the World placed distinctive tree headstones for members who passed on. Both WOW and MWA are still in business to this day.

Grave Explorations there's an old German cemetery in Whittier ca. on so. Painter ave. Most whittier residents aren't aware of it. German settlers came to Whittier I think in the 1920s. They had their own church and brick mill all next to each other. The cemetery is small if you google images of it. It's another forgotten cemetery and a small part of whittier history that still stands.

Its a pity that progress takes away these old cemeterys Sydney in the old days had twoOld cemetery in the middle of the city both were lost to progress
@graveexplorations7 жыл бұрын
You're so right. It's strange to think that in the early history of great cities, the cemeteries were set up outside of town, but almost over night they became the center of town. Vachel Lindsay wrote a poem called "What the Sexton Said," about what progress does to graveyards. It's worth checking out.

'Hollywood Forever' cemetery did not reject Hattie - it was the previous owner of that cemetery, which operated under another name, who rejected Hattie. The Hollywood Forever owners invited her family to have her reburied in Hollywood Forever, but they declined. There is a cenotaph in H.F. dedicated to Hattie.

Could u tell me where Buster Keaton was buried I love the silent movies ???
@graveexplorations7 жыл бұрын
Me too! Buster Keaton (a brilliant and underrated comic genius) is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in the Hollywood Hills. I did some filming there for my Laurel and Hardy video, but I did not get to his grave. Hundreds of film stars from the silent era up to the present day are interred at one of two Forest Lawn locations. They are in Glendale (the oldest) and the Hollywood Hills. Both are very large and beautiful, and are tourist attractions in their own right.
@pauldelgadillo18276 жыл бұрын
As Grave Explorations explained. Buster Keaton was buried at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery. Find the presentation on the Hollywood Graveyard channel and it's a real good one with actual movie clips. I just passed Hollywood Forever on Santa Monica today and Tyler Kassidy, the new owner, has really cleaned the place up during the past twenty years or so. The remains of Judy Garland were moved there from New York in January.

One correction: The Mormon Battalion was not sent to California by Brigham Young. While Young supported the organization of the battalion, and vowed that the soldiers' families would be taken care of in the trek to the Salt Lake Valley, the battalion was under the direction of Gen. Kearney, and helped tip the balance of power in Kearney's favor when John C. Fremont started going rogue.
