We live in London so we did Eurostar direct, super easy. Spent a week there late August, in an Airbnb, the top floor of an old Government embassy building converted into apartments. It had gargoyles coming out of the architecture, we were overlooking the lovely mix of trees and the enormous cemetery, the cemetery was rather beautiful to be in. We did all those things you did and, like you we thought it was a very easy city. A relaxing time. We walked a lot, best way to enjoy a city. We missed some good restaurants because we also failed to book time slots. But we found others that were perfectly ok. Shopping was good, we ate too many delicious pastries. We liked the book shops too. I purchased some new hiking shoes. It was a memorable and pleasant place . Quite different to other French cities we’ve been too. We hope to see Amsterdam by train and go back to Berlin again. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for sharing.

Very nice. I've driven past Lille from the Netherlands to France. Never stopped there. Looks like it's worth a visit!

When crossing Flanders just remember that Lille is "Rijsel" in Flemish/Dutch 😉😉. Lille actually is/was a Flemish city but it has been French since 1667.

I just recently went to Lille and I loved it, I wanna go back! I didn't finish seeing all of what the Beaux Arts museum has and I wanna go see the Institut Pasteur Museum. Also another recommended place to visit in Lille - the belfry of the city hall. It's soaring high and you can go up there to see views of the city. 🙂

I love Lille, it's only just over an hour by Eurostar train from London (once I get to Kings Cross which takes about 2 hours from my home). The zoo closes for the cold weather (most of autumn and wall winter) and this May, quite a bit of it was closed off as they renovate it after their 2 hippos have been moved away. The citadel is a working military site, so getting onto one of the very limited tours is difficult. I stayed in an aparthotel and as a single traveller it was great because I could do my own meals when I wanted, cheaper than eating in a restauraunt. As a repeat customer of the accommodation I was offered an unbelievable deal of around 70 Euros per night, so I booked 8 nights, which was cheaper than many of the "budget" hotels.... my finances are limited but this offer made it an easy choice to stay there again, and I'm hoping I can return in 2025. The public transport system is good and cheap, nearby towns of Roubaix and Tourcoing are within the travel area and are worth going to, if you have time and can tear yourself away from Lille itself.
