I've been working there as a volunteer 10 years ago, was a real great place! it's also interesting for fans of botanics, since it has the biggest collection of trees (from around the world if I recall correctly) on the north island.

@@NZPocketGuide maybe go the far end of the park, there is a small hut to rent with a great view over the park and even with Mt. Manganui on the horizon.

Very sacred place. The whole area has a very murderous history.

Speaking of waterfalls, I hope you got to do the hike up to the top of Wairere Falls (near Matamata). (I expect we'll be seeing that video soon :-)

Damn! Sadly we had to miss the highest falls on the North Island as we are kind of running out of time! we still have to fit Auckland and all of Northland in the small amount of time that we have left! It's yet an other testament to the HUGE amount of things to do in NZ, despite all we do, we still miss out on a lot :(

That's a pity; perhaps you'll get to visit it 'privately' sometime before you leave NZ. Anyway, if you're still in the mood for waterfalls, you've got Whangarei Falls and Haruru Falls in Northland, and Hunua Falls and Kitekite Falls in Auckland.

Thanks for the tips, we'll add those to our todo list, we'll try to fit as many of those as possible on our itinerary!

You can combine Kitekite Falls with a visit to Piha Beach (which you should visit in any case, because it's the most popular/iconic of Auckland's West Coast beaches). (There are other (wilder, more remote) West Coast beaches that I like even more (e.g., Whatipu, Anawhata), but you might not have time to visit those.) Hunua Falls can be combined with bush walks in the nearby Hunua Range. (With many/most(?) of the tracks in the Waitakere Range currently closed (because of kauri dieback disease, the Hunua Range is perhaps the best option for bush walks near Auckland.) Whangarei Falls is right near the centre of town, so you could combine that with a visit to something else in Whangarei. Similarly, Haruru Falls is very close to Paihia (Bay of Islands). Of course, in Auckland, you must visit Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island. (Also, Tiritiri Matangi Island, if you feel like visiting yet another beautiful wildlife sanctuary :-)

Wow, thanks for all that super useful info! Whangarei Falls & Tiritiri Matangi (we're always in the mood for more wildlife sanctuaries) are on the itinerary and we'll see if we can fit the rest in!
