Traffic around the mount is pretty bad in summer but the beach is definitely not packed by the standards of other countries even on some of the best weather weekends in summer. New Years Eve does get pretty busy though. We are locals and we generally avoid the area from Christmas until end of January just because of the traffic but wouldn't be that bad if you were staying somewhere local and could walk.
