I understand the other Robert wearing the long sleeves gloves ect now! That poison would be jumping on me without even being touched! 🤦🏻‍♀️

This cemetery needs a GoFundMe to hire a landscaping crew for a couple of days. After that, keeping it up won't be such a chore. Now that I've watched further, I amend my statement to an 8 person crew for a few days and add an arborist.

In western KY there is a historic black cemetery in a city park. It is rough terrain and the city hires a man with his herd of goats . He’s a retired teacher and brings his camper and stays close to the area for a few days while the goats eat it clean. KET did a story on them.

The two Roberts, I have done genealogy since the 1990's. I just recently located and visited the old overgrown cemeteries where my 2nd and 3rd great grandparents are layed and many families. We cleaned as much as possible and cleaned the markers. They had a sign where it had dates of clean_up...but assume the one's that did it died off 🥺 I finally got cousins to help me get markers for our grandparents as I know after we are gone the younger one's probably won't do it.

You are possibly right. I have family that I am not able to visit. My heart crying more for not being able to visit than the hole in my heart that they are gone. Glad you and yours family were able to place markers in their memory. It hurts me too see the ones without markers. Robert #1 and Robert#2 are viewing and recording these persons from the past. It is so low of whoever owns that cemetery to just ignore the graves that are older just because those people have no one left to watch out for them. Usually they are churches that abandon these cemeteries. They move away and just forget the graves. Shameful. I get upset every time I see one of these abandoned old graveyards.
@RepublicTX
@RepublicTX 2 жыл бұрын
If the church is gone, the congregation is scattered and likely gone too. Lord only knows who actually owns the property. Could be the county or city and they generally don't expend a lot of manpower on such places beyond the occasional mowing of what they can get to.
@ellietobe
@ellietobe 2 жыл бұрын
@@RepublicTX There is another badly neglected cemetery that these people found about a year ago that was within the city limits. The church still owned the property. They moved away to another site and just abandoned their original cemetery. It apparently happens far too often. The city should be responsible to demand that the property owners take care of the land. Everything turns into a legal hassle anymore and because most towns and cities are now bankrupt no one will address the care of abandoned cemeteries or buildings. Too expensive.

Maintaining all those graves requires money and time, no doubt. You can't really complain unless you're willing to pay the owners to do it as a full-time job. And the descendants of those buried people probably have no idea they existed.

I agree. I'm sure there's better ways of handling outgrown areas. I understand that eventually areas like this can get full but, I still think there's better ways to handle things than just say, oh well, forget them. I know if it was my plot with my own remains in it & it was decades & more later & I'm pretty much disintegrated by then. I'd rather see my same spot used by other generations in the family, then just have it abandoned & used as a farm to plant & sell groceries, etc... Just gross. I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing the food I eat is being grown in another's remains, just as I'm sure the future ones would feel if it were my own remains. Families pay for these plots. Therefore, there should be rights for them to decide to keep them in the family if they wish. Not for the cities, governments, etc... To just decide to do whatever they want to them or with them. And that's, well, were bored of taking care of these. So, lets just plow over them & pretend that we have no clue what happened to the records of their existence or their locations of their remains, etc... A home can play dumb, & the governments are the best at doing that. And this is proof that they sadly do that. A huge thank you to both Roberts, as well as all of their work crew, etc.... All people deserve to be remembered, respected, etc.... I'm sure all of the souls of these people feel the same way. :)

I feel like the cities and counties all the old cemeteries are located in should be ashamed of their lack of obligation in keeping up these old cemeteries. Even in small rural towns the county should set up some kind of volunteer groups to keep them maintained. Or maybe use community service workers to help in keeping them up. It is ashamed that the final resting place of ancestors isn't respected enough to keep some weeds pulled and some grass cut.

When your headed out on a excursion, why not have some brushes and weed clippers in each of your vehicles. That way, if you find a cool place like this one, you can at least clean the sites off and clip off some branches. That place needs a weed whack ever! Nice work finding this place in the middle of a development. At least the developer didn't build homes one top of the graves.

You know some of those that are nearly invisible now can probably still be seen with a rubbing. One of the ones you said was completely gone and you then raised the camera to go to another spot and for just a second I thought I could read "George" on that stone. Some paper and chalk would bring those letters back. It may be the last chance those souls have of letting the world know they were once here. I can't help thinking that those poured concrete ones that are fading away the fastest are just showing us that the great depression is still giving these poor souls one last kick. (By the way - this was a great video. I'd love to see you guys take on a place like this and spend time (and volunteer hours) to really fix it up. Who knows how many other graves are in that very spot where you were walking. That would be one restoration project I'd really enjoy!)

People of the town and publisher of the newspaper: This can start with one person, family or group. Go out to this cemetery, find a family plot, clean it up and record the names See if you can find anything out about that family. Editor: Publish these in a column called In the Past. Include the names of the cleaners/researchers. I think the idea will carry on with many others doing the cleanup. People like to see their names in print. That column could turn into a page, and subscriptions may increase.

I'm big into genealogy also. I just recently took a trip to a site and with permission was able to go into private property and see what was left of an 1890's Stage Stop that was my Great great great grandparents. I could feel the family presence. I've been to several cemeteries that have my ancestors. I love these 3 keeping these people's memories alive.

I really like this video. Very interesting. I just noticed on Find a Grave that this Shiloh Cemetery has a listing of the graves so far identified. One of the names is "Biggers". Didnt you guys visit another cemetery with that name in it? I thought I rememberd.

It's just so saddening to see the graves of so many just forgotten and no longer tended to. It would be really nice if someone cleaned up the cemetery. It might be a good boy scout project or even a church or volunteer community group clean-up. God bless the souls of the departed.

I live in Southern Indiana and have been visiting a graveyard since I was young that has a circle of graves around 12 feet in circumference and it's soldier's from the revolutionary War. This graveyard is down a hillside and there was a curch/schoolhouse at the bottom of the hill. It's absolutely beautiful. It's fairly maintained and is marked at the top by a huge oak tree

You guys sure can find 'em! Dang. Always sad to see cemeteries overgrown, and the people for the most part forgotten. What is really upsetting is the veterans. If you fought for this country your grave should always be maintained. Thank you for the trip!

I love that you care about the history of these forgotten places. I worry for you about snakes . I know you take care. I recommend a lopper. It works usually for me, I am old and small. The handles are longer than a hedge clipper, And it is more powerful.

I've never seen so many box tombs and slabs in one cemetery. Years ago I stumbled across a cemetery that was just as badly overgrown as that one. But it was much smaller. I don't think it was any bigger than maybe 80' X 80', just a wild guess.

It's a shame to see this cemetery in such sad shape for where it's located. No body really cares anymore. I know and understand the dead certainly don't care but, someone should atleast care enough to keep it from being so over grown. 😪😔

I'd contact a Boy Scout Troop or two and maybe a landscaping company to see if they'd want to volunteer a Saturday to clear it out. Good publicity for both groups and doing a great deed to restore the dignity of the cemetery and those resting there.
