Fun fact about dooms engine: with how the map maker and engine works it is impossible to get a floor to exist above or below another floor so the fact that the basement and upstairs room are seemless transitions is insane
@GreatNaturalStupidity Жыл бұрын
The entire map is basically build on seemless teleporters. In fact: openning the map in Slade reveals that there are at least a dozen of Main house copies alone. It's also just a giant reference to House of Leaves (from the word "house" being highlighted in the journal down to the fact that in bad endings Navidsons are mentioned (a family in a fictional story inside that book))
@QuotePilgrim Жыл бұрын
With modern source ports you can actually get a floor above another. There are some limitations that come with that, but it's definitely possible. It isn't how the transition from upstairs to basement is done here, though, that is done with line portals. I'm sorry to ruin a bit of the magic for you, but all it takes to set a line portal in a map editor is right click a line, select the option to edit its properties, and assign it the "Line_SetPortal" special, with the tag of the sector the portal should take you to as an argument. Getting the transition to look smooth is a matter of ensuring the sector on both sides of the portal have matching textures and the same height. There are tutorials on KZbin that teach you how to do it in like 5 minutes, if not less. Not to diminish the amount of effort it must have taken to make this map, it is extremely impressive, but because of the whole scale of the project. Any of the tricks this map does, on its own, is super easy to do, what really makes it impressive is how many different tricks there are, and all of the different ways in which they were implemented.

A few details of this map that The Librarian may or may not have missed because I only got to around 1:38:00. 1) You are actually a bit taller in the modified "My House" map, and the height increase maintains throughout Doom 2's second level, Underhalls. 2) On the second loop through the house, the doors, mirrors, and gun animations get fancy. Alongside the music changing to a similar, yet slightly "wrong" version of the normal Doom music. The gun animation's FPS increase stays enabled, even thoughout Underhalls. Speaking of fancy, you shouldn't be able to have layered rooms in Doom unless if you find a way to do it seamlessly... 3) If you were to beat Underhalls, which is an original Doom 2 map as a reminder, you go back to My House automatically. This, aside from the creepy "fake escape" feel you get, allows you to restock on ammo and reset any dead ends you may have ended up with originally. Plus, the double barrel shotgun "Super Shotgun" is found here, which may come in handy. 4) In the mirror world, the exit door reappears, but if you were to leave you instead go to "sllahrednU:20paM" Which is of course, a mirrored version of Underhalls, and if you were to beat *that* you go back to My House but in the mirror world. 5) If you try to use cheats, most of them don't work except Noclip and Godmode, and the toggle messages are changed. Noclip is "Be careful noclipping in the wrong areas" and "Better safe than sorry". Godmode is "My reflection winked at me, I've covered the mirror in the attic, just in case." and "Nothing good comes from a house fire". Also, if it wasn't obvious already, Noclip sends you to the backrooms if you go out of bounds, which also happens in sllahrednU. 6) Not really a detail, but there's a BFG in the airport ladies' room, if you manage to cover every surface except the entrance in blood, and there's a backpack for extra ammo capacity in a locker nearby the pool with the giant fish in it. Also not as useful, but there is a chainsaw located in the cardboard box in the garage, but if you go here in the house with the fancy doors, you'll only find a chalk outline of where it should be instead, should've brought ~5000 CoD Zombies points.
@shibainu2528 Жыл бұрын
Also, something else for number 6) The dark medkit known as a "Berserk Pack" (You know which one) can be obtained by going to the bathroom located behind the closet, then interacting with the crack on the other side of the wall. This should make the kit fall and let you get it. This gives you a permanent buff, at least until you go to the next level.
@shibainu2528 Жыл бұрын
Last one : The items you collect fill up the portrait in both the regular, AND mirrored world, for a total of 16 items. You'll fill up the original world's portrait first which changes the flower painting, then collect the last item you need for the mirrored world, which gives you another hint with the flower painting. Items like the baseball are obvious, but the others are more symbollic like a Baby's rattle / bottle, a christmas TREE ornament, a can of tuna FISH, an ICE CREAM milkshake, etc. Happiness is found in the small things... and happiness... has to be fought for...

Also what was interesting is that the moment I saw in the journal that the dates had red numbers, I thought that it was a code sequence which would be needed during the game but oddly enough it didn't seem to mean anything.
@shibainu2528 Жыл бұрын
@@itsshrimp91 I think it actually *is* a sequence, First number is about the mirror world, Second number is about the baby / daycare, Third number is about the bathtub. You have to go to the mirror world first to open the daycare path, but if you do the bathtub dream out of order you can't get back to the house without locking yourself out of at least one item, which will put you through the fire dream or the abandoned house. (If you go to the airport to get the pills, you have to wake up in the abandoned house, if you leave through the staircase portal, you won't get the pills and the bathtub is now inaccessible, forcing you to start the house fire if you don't know the secret path) Also, the fire nightmare is crossed out, suggesting that you aren't supposed to do it in your final run.

About (6) in order to get the chainsaw, you must enter the house directly through the garage. If you use any door it will disappear and leave out the chalk mark.

I'm slightly sad you didn't notice the new doors when they kicked in. For a bit of context, doors in the Doom engine typically only operate on up and down closing. Anything more fancy, such as in-and-out, is typically not something you see. Doors that function on hinges are *right out* for most. Seeing a door open on a hinge in the Doom engine... for many, that was the "SHUT THE FUCK UP. HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE" moment when all bets officially went off the table.

In the very first variant of the house when you open the map, the second floor is just a simple discrete teleport to another floor. On the second version of the map, the map is updated with GZDOOM UDMF features, so you can use actual 3d floors, and mirrors and portals and stuff

@@OperatorVanta Most of the map is made up of various rooms that are connected via teleporters. GZdoom is still not able to get past the fact that Doom maps are rendered from 2D to 3D, it can just make maps look more 3D with greater, more detailed Inclines(if map makers choose to design their maps that way). I recently discovered you from your From the Fog series, and this Doom map also popped into my feed shortly after. Now you're playing it. (Power Pak was my introduction to this work of Doom wonder.) For those of us who have played Doom since around the time of release, subtle changes in this wad are noticeable and contribute to the overall eeriness of it. The player is taller, the music has subtle changes that you wouldn't notice unless you REALLY know your Doom music, the weapon sprites have more frames (smoother animations from Smooth Doom), etc. Both the normal world and mirror world both have 8 secret trinkets for you to find (that fill up on the wall pictures as you noticed.) The part with the ledge above the dog can be reached, but you need to be running (default is holding shift, you can also toggle 'always run' in GZDoom settings.) You might need to use SR50 to reach it (Strafe Run speed 50, a technique frequently used by speedrunners.) It can take several tries to get it right. In the bloody bathroom, if you angle yourself just right in a corner to view the entire thing as the bloody scene except for the entryway you can find the BFG9000 in an alcove instead of a doorway out. There's ways to jump across the liminal space concrete drop into some of the other rooms, where you can trigger a weird feature that turns on all TVs in the wad. Also, activate the noclip cheat (either using the cheatcode IDCLIP or type noclip in the GZDoom console by pressing ~ ) and walk into the exit teleporter. Welcome the to Backrooms. I recall Power Pak's connection of the journal to the final showdowns you encounter. "Happiness is worth fighting for." And here you are, armed to the teeth, waves of hell monsters standing between you and your happy ending, and the "most mysterious song on the internet" playing from your crashed car. Happiness is worth fighting for. RIP AND TEAR UNTIL IT IS DONE! This wad is a better gameplay and storytelling experience than most AAA titles these days. John Romero once said id Software set out to create the ultimate game, the "coolest thing on earth no one had ever seen before", and 30 years later I'd say they've delivered. Doom's legacy is eternal. EDIT: It should also be mentioned this wad is heavily inspired by the book "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski published in 2000. Also, one of the doors shortly after entering the house can be opened a few times to reveal a dark passageway that takes several minutes to do down. Many of these changing/guiding aspects of the house came from the House of Leaves book. EDIT 2: Typing in various Doom cheat codes gives you hints to progression and some hidden hints.

I like to interpret the entire game as representing the emotions a loved one would go through after a close friend dies. You go back to old places and try to relive these nice, comforting old memories, until they suddenly become...hollow, and feel less safe now that the person who made those memories so special is gone from your life. It leads to frustration, longing, so many confusing and upsetting emotions, which leads to this place you once loved becoming twisted and almost unrecognizable. It's why I think so many of the locations, like the Liminal Hotel and the Liminal Swimming Pool and the Airport, all share similar layouts to the original house. It's the perceived impossibility of trying to go back to normal like nothing ever happened. Something *did* happen, and it feels impossible to live on without that person. It all comes to a climax after you've collected all these items, jumped through all of these hoops to try to bring back the one you loved. At the gas station, with all these enemies ready to tear you to shreds in this place you've had nightmares about, that you realize you can't keep avoiding or trying to run from these emotions. You have to face them head on and actually try to overcome them, to cope with them, rather than be scared of them. And once you finally defeat this giant hoard of enemies, all of these negative emotions, you can finally relax and find peace in a beautiful, sunset beach. They may be gone, but that's okay. It's about the comfort they gave you while they were alive. They aren't around anymore, but you have to live on without them, to make them proud. And you can only be at peace once you finally realize this. It's not an easy thing to do, but it feels immensely satisfying once you do, almost like overcoming a gauntlet in a game like Doom. It took me a few playthroughs and watching let's plays to come to this conclusion, but this is what I believe was trying to be conveyed. And I think it's really beautiful.

Wanted to point out that at 1:54:40 the song playing on the radio is nicknamed "The Most Mysterious Song on The Internet" because we don't know who made it or what the song is even called and the only reason we even know about it is because it played on a random radio station in the middle of Germany (or somewhere else I can't remember exactly).

so I seen some explain some things about the map (updating this as I watch more) "Doomcute" is when you recreate things in the doom engine so like how you compared it to the thing in the Hammer Editor. Something that you probably don't know is that one of the uncanny off things about this map that I've heard people talk about is the Doom itself uses a 2D map then generates a 3D environment (probably doing a poor job of explaining it) but doom 2 and GZ doom cannot normally have floors of levels stacked onto of each other like how the house is.

Fun fact the music playing at the crashed car with the gas station is a song that is "the most mysterious song on the internet" no one knows who its from or what the confirmed name is but people have called it "like the wind" but its thought to be a song that was played in the 80s on a german radio station
@errorperson13 Жыл бұрын
the game does a little trolling, then says sorry and gives you nearly a full refill on health honestly im starting to wonder how many people noticed the letters of the last six flight labels at 1:16:30 (visible the first time he passes it too) reads "HELPME"

@EmeraldEmsiron Жыл бұрын
so, fun tidbit, the song at the crash scene is often called the most mysterious song on earth or something, but the nostalgic feeling it gives for a song ive never heard is amazing, and fit this mod in a way that I cant disconnect that nostalgic feeling from the combat. ALSO, there is a very common and probably very likely theory that I think just adds a nice touch to the story, it seems likely that the creator is a trans man. during the bathroom jumpscare, you enter the woman's washroom, the mens washroom is completely normal, but the womans, just to word it supporting this theory, is terrifying. you enter with an empty medication bottle, then when you leave, the medication bottle is full, *and* the signs on the doors have swapped. that plus the love symbol showing s+a rather than s+t or something also implies that to a lesser degree, assuming "A" was refering to his deadname. that scene, given that there was a dog and no cat, is likely some kind of memory of a time long ago.
@S0URS0P Жыл бұрын
wowww, i'd only just started diving into this mod/story yesterday and i totally picked up on the "steve and tom were probably lovers" overtone... but that tiny detail about the bathrooms swapping totally gave me a subtle trans allegory vibe that i hadn't seen anyone else really talk about!!! i nearly chalked it up to just me projecting LOL. it's such a blink-and-you-miss-it detail i can't help but hyperfocus onto it. theory goggles on but; the obituaries purposefully using non-gendered language when referring to steve & tom's "partners" also stood out to me, and the themes of wanting children but it "not being meant to be" all gives me this picture that steve and tom (or, "A" at the time) were friends with a mutual crush & not-so-great upbringings; maybe there was a big emphasis on steve growing up to live that suburban wife-and-kids lifestyle; but they reconnect years later to find that Tom transitioned but the spark remains. steve referring to tom very purposefully as just a "friend" despite them obviously being More puts more focus on that past baggage... but thats just a gayme theory
@clayleone9111 Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad someone else recognized the most mysterious song! I jumped out of my seat when I heard that. Librarian probably was happy to realize in editing that he wouldn't have to worry about copywrite strikes lol
@alan_b_scary Жыл бұрын
oh my god, i'm so glad i'm not the only one who thought about one of them being trans, that was the only explanation i could think of. neither obituary explicitly mentioned a wife or even anyone the name A could refer to, and honestly? kinda refreshing not to have to go through the typical hetero tropes in the mod. very very cool stuff
@mudkipzforlife Жыл бұрын
I never thought of the theory of the creator being trans. I was in favor of the theory that the creator and the friend were lovers and that the A was a nickname or something based on him last name of Allord (getting that idea from Power Pak's video). Also I knew that song sounded so familiar, then I remember hearing it from a Whang! Tales from the internet video. Hope that song's origins gets discovered one day since it sounds really good.

I know this might have been said already but this map is so effing intuitive, because yeah you can play the map w/out reading the “Journal” and probably get most of the secrets. But you can also read it and know what to do immediately (e.g : filling the tub and falling in, walking through the mirror, the car crash, the attic) But the third way is my favourite, you can figure it out as you’re going through.
