I so appreciate the architecture and the preservation of historical buildings in England. Don't have many in the US. We just tear down the old buildings and build a new one🙄 It irks me big-time!

Plus it's a young country in general. The oldest houses are only from the 1700s.. There are a few of those on my street. I live in a Victorian which are quite common in the center, downtown area of a lot of American towns but these are quite young and new in comparison to many in Europe. I wish we would preserve more homes and buildings though too. At least a lot of towns have a historical section where it's meant to keep being restored.

That furthers my point. We'll never have a large number of historic buildings if we tear down our dated buildings before they even have a chance to become historic.

Postcards would be awesome! One way to determine who to send them to is to make a page where viewers can fill out their addresses then randomly pick so many to send to, and once they've been chosen remove them from the list to keep it fair.

If you ever do return to Oxford, make sure to attend Choral Evensong in the beautiful medieval Chapel of New College. It's free-to-view but all donations are gratefully accepted. The notorious "Turf Tavern" - where a young American Law student called William Jefferson Clinton smoked dope but didn't inhale - is around the corner from New College and well worth visiting. If you want to understand why sporting events between teams representing Oxford and Cambridge are so bitterly contested, the "X Marks the Spot" in Broad Street, opposite Balliol College, will help to explain why. "Be of good cheer, Master Ridley, and play the man ..."

Fun fact - By kind permission of Queen Elizabeth I, Jesus College is allowed to hold its Chapel services in Welsh and Christ Church C*****e is allowed to hold its Chapel services in Latin. Christ Church also keeps its clocks on Oxford Local Time (five minutes earlier than Greenwich Mean Time) by kind permission of Queen Elizabeth II.

They only scratched the surface of what Oxford has to offer. The painted ceiling of the Sheldonian Theatre, celebrating the triumph of the Cavaliers over the Roundheads in 1660, is surely the equal of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and you also get to see the city skyline from the viewing gallery on the roof. Many Colleges - usually the smaller and poorer ones, but St. John's is an obvious exception to this rule - are free to visit. Try Worcester College, whose spacious grounds include the oldest inhabited buildings in Oxford, or beautiful Merton College, where Queen Henrietta Maria stayed during the Civil War. Of course, every Oxford University College has a Chapel whose services are open to everyone (even non-Christians) so don't miss out on the joys of Choral Evensong at New College - "new" that is, since 1379!

The oldest university in the world is University of al-Qarawinyyin which was founded by Ms. Fatima al-Fihri in 859 CE, located in Fez, Morocco. So there you have it. They were talking about the World’s oldest “continuously operational” Universities, so the top 5 would be: 1. Bologna (Italy) 1088, 2. Oxford (England) 1096, 3. Cambridge (England) 1209, 4. Salamanca (Spain) 1218, 5. Padua (Italy) 1222. If we were going on the founding dates alone, the top 10 would look something like: 1. Al-Karaouine (Morocco) 859, 2. Al-Azhar (Egypt) 970-972, 3. Al-Nizamiyya (Iraq) 1065, 4. Bologna (Italy) 1088, 5. Oxford (England) 1096, 6. Paris (France) 1150, 7. Cambridge (England) 1209, 8. Salamanca (Spain) 1218, 9. Montpellier (France) 1220, 10. Padua (Italy) 1222. Plus Oxford isn’t even the oldest house of education in England - “King’s School Canterbury” was established around 500 years *before* Oxford in 597 AD, and is said to be the oldest “continuously operating” school in the world.

@@dr.westwood Oh sorry I just assumed that was the reason Al-Qarawinyyin wasn’t included (it was for a lot of the other examples anyway). On further investigation… I found that a lot of scholars argue it wasn’t an actual “University” until after WW2 (operating instead as a “Madrasa”). It just depends what specifications you use; some say Bologna, some say Al-Qarawinyyin.

If you’re interested to look some up, here are a load of Harry Potter locations I’ve visited in England: In the *City of Oxford* (South-West England): - The “Divinity School” (built 1427 with ceiling added in 1483): Hogwarts Infirmary (Philosopher’s Stone) and the Room in which Professor McGonagall teaches everyone to dance for the Yule Ball (Goblet of Fire), - “New College Cloisters” (built 1390s): used for the scene where Malfoy gets turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody (Goblet of Fire), - “Duke Humfrey’s Library” (they mostly filmed within the original medieval section; built 1487, but also used the newer half from the early 1600s): it was used to portray the Hogwarts library in the Philosopher’s Stone, Goblet of Fire and the Half-Blood Prince, - “Christ Church Staircase” (16th century): The Staircase which leads into the Great Hall (Philosopher’s Stone), and the nearby hallways were used for the scene in which Hermione shows Harry his father’s Quidditch trophy. - The “Dining Hall” (built 1529): This was not actually a filming location, but this room served as the inspiration for the ‘Great Hall’ in Hogwarts (as did a lot of other aspects of Oxford and Cambridge). --------- The *beautiful medieval village of “Lacock, Wiltshire”* (South-West England): *Within the village’s Abbey* (Lacock Abbey - the sections used were mostly from the 1230s): - The “Chapter House”: Mirror of Erised room (Philosopher’s Stone), Study Room (Chamber of Secrets) and the room where Snape and McGonagall examine the cursed necklace (Half-Blood Prince), - The “Sacristy”: Professor Snape’s Potions Classroom (Philosopher’s Stone), - The “Cloisters”: Hogwarts Hallways (Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), - The “Warming Room”: Professor Quirell’s Defence Against the Dark Arts Classroom (Philosopher’s Stone). *Within the Village itself* (which has been used in countless movies/ TV shows from Pride and Prejudice to Downton Abbey): - The village stood in for “Budleigh Babbington” (Half-Blood Prince), - Cantax House (built 1699): was Professor Slughorn’s hideout (Half-Blood Prince), - A small cottage at the end of Church Street was used as the Potter House (Philosopher’s Stone), where Voldemort murdered Lily and James. --------- Within *Gloucester Cathedral* (built between 1089-1450 in South-West England): - The stunning fan-vaulted “Cloisters” (1351-1377): were used as Hogwarts Hallways in the Philosopher’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets (most notably where blood was used on the wall to signal the opening of the Chamber of Secrets) and the Half-Blood Prince, - The “Lavatorium” (Monks Washroom from the 1300s): was used in the Philosopher’s Stone (hiding from the escaped Troll) and Half-Blood Prince (Harry overhears Snape take the unbreakable vow). --------- Within *Durham Cathedral* (built 1093-1133 in North-East England): - The “Chapter House”: Professor McGonagall’s Transfiguration Classroom (Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), - The “Cloisters”: used as Hogwarts Hallways, as well as the courtyard where Harry fly’s Hedwig in the snow and Ron vomits slugs (Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets), - A room high up in the cathedral: was where Harry, Ron and Hermione met Fluffy the three-headed dog (Philosopher’s Stone). --------- Within *Alnwick Castle, Northumberland* (mostly built between 1096-1150 in North-East England): - The exterior was used to portray Hogwarts in both the Philosopher’s Stone (most notably where Madam Hooch teaches Quidditch to the first years), and the Chamber of Secrets (for example where Harry and Ron crash into the Whomping Willow). --------- Within *Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire* (built 1590 in North-East England): - The exterior was used as “Malfoy Manor” in the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and 2 (along with the addition of spires). --------- In the 18th century *landscaped gardens of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire* (South-West England): - A 300 year old Cedar of Lebanon tree: was used in the flashback sequence which showed young Snape being bullied by James Potter (Order of the Phoenix).
