I was people watching in Rome, early morning, as they went off to work, not bothering to look up at the ancient ruins around them. I, on the other hand couldn’t believe the ruins were just there, reach out and touch, walking the same paths as the Romans. It’s so hard to wipe the joy of being there, even on the roof of the Milan Cathedral, scared of heights, I was in joyous wonder. Little finds which seem ignored by passing public can bring such achievement to the exploring tourist.

When relatives of mine were here from Florence Italy a couple of years ago they had no interest at all in the typical sightseeing around Brisbane where we took them. After all, they had come from a place that had thousands of years of history all around them where as anything in Brisbane was no more than 100 -150 years old! The house they lived in in Florence was 450 years old! But they had such a fascination for the wildlife we had here, they would spend hours listening to birds & picking up lizards & bugs & butterflies. All depends what you used to.

Those mosaics are amazing! We think their lifestyle was basic, yet they had mosaics of such incredible beauty under their feet.

I love that like me, you get a kick out of touching stones that would have been handled by people in Celtic or earlier times. We were fascinated by the brochs still standing at Glenelg in Scotland. Haven’t made it to Scara Brae yet.

Thanks for the info on Dorchester Robert. I'm putting it on my list. Praise for all the archaeologists who have worked to discover all this for future generations to marvel at.

Something you should not miss in Dorchester is the local Museum. Being male and interested in Roman military history I wanted to see the artifacts from the Roman taking of Maiden Castle. But this place has 1 of the most eclectic and extensive collections I've ever seen outside of a capital city. For literati there is the Thomas Hardy collection, for geologists the fossils from the Jurassic Coast, for archaeologists the Roman, Celtic and Neolithic artifacts plus an interesting regional country life collection. As shown the area is brilliant for walking but also has good rail connections. Came for 3 days and stayed a week. 🙂
