What a beautiful place Lincoln is, I visited it about 35 years ago, but only visited the cathedral. Thanks for taking us around the Roman trail, very interesting especially like the arch at the end, looked a lovely day for it, look forward to the next adventure

Isn't it wonderful on Bailgate that they made those lovely brick road sets where the columns were? I mean they could have just paved over them and stuck a small sign somewhere, but the discovery and history was significant to whoever lived and worked there that they wanted to share it in a way everyone could see. Thank you for an interesting and fun tour! :-)

The well in St.Paul in the Bail was excavated in the 1980's. I was part of the excavation team at the time. Great video

Wow that’s incredible! We’re there any interesting items found in the well? Thanks for watching! Would love to know more! 🙌

@@RomanFound From what I can remember many of the finds were much later than Roman and it appeared to have been re-dug sometime in the 17th or 18th Century. Leatherwork, wooden bowls, pottery and animal bones were the main finds. It makes you wonder what was found when they re-dug it
@RomanFound Жыл бұрын
How interesting! Would be really cool to see what came out! I wonder if the Collection has any of the items 🤔 I can imagine when it was redug there would have been some amazing things 🙈
@dm51964 Жыл бұрын
@@RomanFound I dont know if there is anything in The Collection from the well but there is part of a Roman freeze which was found by a colleague at Hungate and I found a bronze bowl in the destruction layers of a 4th Century Roman town house and part of a Roman road ran next to the modern road surface and the road surface was so deep and compacted still we could not take a sample from it. Our team also excavated along the waterfront when it was redeveloped and found parts of Roman and later wharves
@RomanFound Жыл бұрын
We’re hoping to do a video with The Collection soon so fingers crossed we get to see some the items you and your colleagues found! The Romans sure knew how to build roads!! Incredible! I bet there’s so much still hidden around Lincoln!

Great video. I live in the city & thought I knew most of the ruins but you guys pointed out some stuff I didn’t know about. There are some more parts of the Roman walls in some of the gardens in the back streets that aren’t on the map. If you come again I’ll happily show you ✌️

You missed the Postergate to the east of the stonebow and also the gate ruin down stair in the night club. The road up steep hill is actually under the shops on your left as you walk up, the steps were are the top end as you entered the upper city by the gateway you mention, not all the way up. Well lane and (Upper) Danegate was created to compensate for the steepness of steep hill. Its not Flaxengate, its Exchequergate. I never knew the mosaic was there, brilliant that you saw it and i have been up those stairs. excellent video footage of the cathedral. Mint wall is amazing, I worked on the survey when we drew aound every single stone on to plastick sheet hanging down it, to then do scale drawings (1986). The water to the resevoir came by pipe, it passed under Waitrose direct to the resevoir, they used to have a section of it in the entrance, when you continued down east bight back to the hotel, you passed another section of wall in someone driveway. Great video, you did well. remindsme of my passion when i worked onteh excavation under Lincoln magistrates and working through the Saxon to Roman archaeology. Keep it up girls

It’s a shame the Roman remains aren’t conserved, they are looking in a sorry state these days. There are remains of the west entrance to the Roman city behind the Strugglers Inn on Westgate. They were unearthed and damaged in the Victorian times, by a landlord trying to create extra space digging into the castle’s defensive bank.
@RomanFound3 ай бұрын
We agree they definitely need some TLC, it’s a shame to see a lot of the information boards looking a bit sorry for themselves too. There’s so much wonderful history hiding round the city! It’s just needs celebrating better!
