Pedro de Valdivia did not fight for Chile's freedom from the Spanish. Pedro de Valdivia was a Spanish military man and conqueror of Extremadura origin. After participating in several military campaigns in Europe, he travelled to America, where he was part of the army of Francisco Pizarro, governor of Peru. With the title of lieutenant governor granted by Pizarro, he led the Conquest of Chile starting in 1540. He founded the oldest cities in Chile, including the capital Santiago (1541), La Serena (1544), Concepción (1550), Valdivia (1552) and La Imperial (1552). He also ordered the founding of the cities of Villarrica and Los Confines (Angol).

the fact that u can see so many people on the streets roots on the mobility , basically the whole rest of the world except for USA and canada , is not so car dependant , so people walk, and public transit its somewhat decent , at least in santiago its pretty easy to go around the city by the metro (subway) alone , that doesnt mean santiago doesnt have traffic problems coz it does but in general infraestructure is more transit oriented , actually whenever u ask for an adress in santiago , pèople will usually tell what metro station is around for location reference , 2 of every 5 homes are located at walkable distance of a metro station so, also thats why u saw lots of pedestrianized streets around the center , wich in america are pretty rare to find if non existant, now chorrillana it is indeed a national treasure and thats exactly how its eaten, usually at parties or before going partying , thou u can get it at any time u like and theres a feww variations that contain olives, white cheese and avocadoes, santiago in general is pretty safe compared to other south american capitals , howevers there's been a recent all time high peak on criminality and everybody is freakin out about it , but like any other big city u should be careful around the center , cheers

Plaza de Armas is usually very busy because there is literally everything just a few minutes away, people leaving their offices to eat somewhere nearby, families going out with their children after school, even many mandatory procedures have to be done there... I live near the Cordillera de los Andes but I always ended up going to the center for different reasons hahaha Anyway, glad you enjoyed the city! These types of videos bring back many memories of my childhood, and seeing people from outside enjoying different things that we have makes my heart fill with joy

Also, an interesting but sad fact is that near where you were, there was a repression and torture camp, run by the dictatorship. It is not very well known because they are usually in hidden places that are not widely known and many of them were actually destroyed (as happened with the camp located in Villa Grimaldi). Currently it is a memorial museum like several others around the city, many of these have photos of people who are still missing today. I hope one day you can return to Chile to enjoy the city more and see this piece of history that often goes unnoticed.

Really nice video about my country's capital city. Couple of things: - Pedro de Valdivia was a Spanish Conqueror, he had nothing to do with the independence given that he lived about 300 years before it. He founded the oldests chilean cities; Santiago, Concepción, Valdivia and others. - Plaza de armas is so full of people bc is full of immigrants. Nothing against them, just a fact. Actually we welcome everyone that comes to our country besides felons, obviously. Now, because of humanitarian crises in other latinamerican countries we are dealing with the bigest immigration wave in modern times. Hope you enjoyed your stay here. Greetings from the south 😉

It actually made me so nervous seeing you guys holding your camera out in the open, or leaving it on some surface while you guys sat in font of it a couple steps away 😅 Those people were warning you about the most common way things get stolen from tourists and other pederestians: it's called "lanzazo" (could be roughly translated to "quick throw"?) and it happens when a thief runs past you and snatches from your hands whatever valuable thing you're holding (usually phones or purses, cameras too) and it happens so quickly that they're able to disappear into the crowd before you can even react. Still, I'm glad you guys didn't have any trouble and enjoyed visiting around here!

I always get a bit annoyed by the fact people visit Santiago and not go to the Andes, 2 hours from Santiago you can have amazing sights of glaciers and glaciated 5000 to 6000m (19,000ft) peaks, you can even walk on some with a guide and be back in the city for dinner. It's very different compared to the southern part of Chile, while it is dryer, mountains are also twice as tall and it gives some 'Himalayan' vibe to the landscape, especially during winter and spring the views are STUNNING. The historic center is fine, but cities like Arequipa, Cusco or Buenos Aires have made a better work preserving their patrimonial buildings, architecture and some places are worth visiting ofc, but are not the highlight of the city, the highlight are the Andes imo.

Hello, Pedro de Valdivia belongs to the Spanish who tried to conquer Chile, they only managed to get halfway, around 500 kilometers south of Santiago, they could not advance further because the Mapuches (original people) were at war for almost 300 years. I recommend that you visit the metropolitan park at the next opportunity, it is the fourth largest urban park in the world, it is a little more than 100 years old and originally they were just quarries and a place for garbage, it has swimming pools, restaurants, children's games, a Japanese garden , etc Also the subway (Metro) was listed as the best in all of America in 2012 (including north and south), it has a lot of art inside, the new lines are fully automatic, driverless. Hi. You're right. The city is surrounded by hills and mountain chains, etc. Actually, Santiago is a Hollow. The central market trades seafood only. If you cross the river ande the street you will find la Vega Chica which is a vegetables market. On the second floor there are restaurants. If you want to meet the real chilean gastronomy for cheap, that's your place. La Vega central is behind Tirso de Molina o Vega Chica. Fruits and juice fruits are so cheap and fresh there... One detail: lots of thieves everywhere just be plain, low profile. Don't wear expensive clothes. Do never call others attention and you will be fine. Be careful with your stuff, cell, money, do never put them in a rackpack hanging on your shoulders. En la Plazade Armas, next to el correo central, there's Museo Histórico. You can undestand a lot of ours 18th and 19th centuries. I like the garments collection. You can also go to cerro San Cristóbal and take teleférico and funicular. You can see the city a little higher there. But the highest sight is at mall Costanera Center, Providencia. Saludooosss :)

Santiago means Saint James in english (Santiago = Sant Iago = Saint Jacob or Saint James, because James the Apostle). Plaza de Armas means, literaly, "Weapons's Square", but maybe a better translation would be "Parade Ground Square".

Tourist always go to the center. 10 years ago it was safe, now It's not, that's why people warned you about robbers. Unless you don't look like a tourist. For example, Lenny Kravitz was in Barrio Italia, but it didn't cause an uproar because he blended in. Although most southern cities are safer than Santiago

Hey guys, Pedro de Valdivia never did anything for the Chilean freedom. He was actually killed by Lautaro's troops, in Tucapel in the year of 1553. He was in the search of precious metals (gold, silver, etc.), to help him to get rich and powerful in front of the Spanish crown. ´He wasn't any kind of hero, but a mercenary. Please respect the history!

If you come to Viña-Valparaíso i can help you 😅

Thank you! What should we see in that area??
@Eloco9arry5 ай бұрын
@@WyattandReyka You should visit Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, where there are many murals, art, museums, cafes, music, poetry... art and culture in general. You can get there by car BUT I suggest you go up in the elevators, since it is more emblematic. You can start from Plaza Sotomayor (in front of the Chilean Navy) and go up in the "El Peral" elevator. From there it is more difficult to make a tour because there is a lot to see and the streets go in all directions. That requires a longer message. You can also go to the House of the Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, "La Sebastiana". I suggest going to the Muelle Prat, the cemetery of dissidents or cemetery n°3 (there are very important people here, and intriguing characters, like Émile Dubois (look him up on Google and you'll think like me, there should be a series about this person). You can also go to Paseo 21 de Mayo, the cultural park of Valparaíso, a former prison, among many other places. And I haven't even mentioned Viña del Mar!! It's a "commune" or neighborhood that is part of the same conurbation, as well as Concon and other places. It's worth staying for several days.

Pedro de Valdivia was Governor of Santiago for Spain he died in 1553, Chile independence started in 1810 with Bernardo O'Higgins. Chile flag is from 1817 the Texas flag is from 1839 Chile all ready had a woman president and it was a disaster... both times ( not necessarily for being a woman but a incompetent Socialist/Communist ) Dulce de leche is call MANJAR What did you sign? Population is probably close to 9 million due to uncontrolled illegal immigration ( Chile is in the process of census ) The Cordillera de Los Andes does not envelop Santiago, there is a Cordillera de la costa that runs parallel creatin the valley Watch out for bands of thieves ( Example from news from few month ago kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWHLpop9drSIfZo ) Also did you notice all the close stores with metal roll up doors? Chile is a beautiful country, have fun, but be careful.
