In this Indonesia Travel Vlog, we explore Surabaya - the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia (behind Jakarta). We start our day at the submarine monument (Monumen kapal selam or 'monkasel') which actually happens to be the biggest submarine monument in all of Asia! The submarine was a present from the Soviet Union. It was used by the Indonesian navy from 1962-1989 and was very important in Indonesia's fight for independence. The submarine is now a monument that you can walk around inside and see just how small the inside is! We learned about the meaning of Surabaya and that the crocodile and shark fighting is the symbol of the city. We then started seeing pictures of crocodiles and sharks all over!! We walked through a nice skatepark and so many gardens (we had no idea Surabaya is so green!!!) to arrive at the famous Chinese mosque - Muhammad Cheng Hoo Mosque. We'd never seen a Chinese mosque before so the building was really interesting to us! Unfortunately there was some event going on that day so we didn't enter the mosque, but it was still nice to see from the outside. We continued walking and found some other really nice Chinese temples around the city, as well as some nice colonial architecture. We then went to the Heroes Monument (Tugu Pahlawan) which is shaped like an upside down nail and reminded us of the Monas building in Jakarta! The monument was built to remember the 1945 Battle of Surabaya. Outside of the park we saw one of the trolleys that is supposed to give free tours of Surabaya! From there we continued walking to the Kota Tua old town. We were surprised that the Kota Tua area of Surabaya seemed to have a lot more Chinese influence than the Kota Tua in Jakarta! Next we stopped for some lunch at a Lontong Balap restaurant....we went in and asked for a menu to which they replied 'no'! It turns out that they only serve one dish - Lontong Balap - which originated in Surabaya. It was so good!! It's now one of our new favorite Indonesian foods! From there we went to the House of Sampoerna which is a Dutch colonial style tobacco museum. It's supposed to be one of the most famous tourist destinations in Surabaya.....however it was closed! We decided to go back to our hotel and work as we couldn't check out the famous museum.
