The pond is looking great! My only recommendation is to leave as much of the grass on the edge of the water unmowed. That will create some habitat for insects and such to further help feed your bass and bait fish. A 2’ wide strip, even around just a portion of the shore would be beneficial

As an aquarium person, I'd say you're better off just running water from the pond to the stock tank and letting it drain back into the pond. The pond's biofiltration is better than anything you could use and it keeps the water conditions(temp/PH/nitrogen) the same as the pond. I'd also add something to shade the stock tank. It'll heat up more quickly than your pond.

What I appreciate most about this series is your commitment to being a responsible steward for the land and animals in your care. Sometimes being a good steward means keeping populations in check, so I'd say a hunt could certainly be a healthy thing for the deer population, especially if there are no natural predators doing the job. Alternatively, cutting back on the feed a bit may be a more passive way to keep the population under control.

As an Idahoan who witnessed our very first case of CWD just a few months back, you should definitely think about getting that herd thinned out! CWD is spreading fast through the country and large herds are responsible. Too many deer in such a small area is an equation for disaster if CWD does get into your county.

@@martingomez8142 They can sometimes get too large for bass to consume, as they are fast growing and repopulate quickly. In addition, they bottom forage and can potentially eat eggs, bass eggs for example. Due to their fast reproduction and growth, they can populate faster and out compete bass for food, nesting areas, and alter surrounding ecosystem. I've been following your channel since you dug the hole. Love it. Keep sharing the adventure. As a land owner and hunter, I have found great information at the KZbin channel for the Mississippi State Deer Lab. Herd management is important and necessary. In your shoes, I would estimate the herd size and develop a harvest plan. There are professionals that can do that for you as well. Who gets to hunt... I'd probably narrow it down to veterans, single mom families, and otherwise challenged individuals... and of course some first timers. Providing that experience for those people will enrich your life. It has mine.

I think it is a good idea to manage your wildlife. Like a crop. Limited harvest of specific deer or wild pigs or Ducks or Geese is good for the overall heath of the ecosystem. This can often be done in a way that creates an income that then can be used to maintain and enhance the system. Beautiful spaces like the one you are creating tend only exist as long as they paid for themselves,

Damn you guys do things the hard way. My father made a living for decades building bigger ponds in only a few weeks with only one small bull dozer and never brought in dirt.

You should also feed Moby something bigger, like a large goldfish, small bluegill/crappie, etc. maybe even a snake.

A good management hunt would be awesome for the herd. Take out some of the smaller bucks or cull bucks and a few does for meat. Get with a biologist and they can give you a report based on number of deer on how many need to be taken. Stay safe for this coming hurricane even though it looks to be headed to FL.

Great video! The audio of the frogs and crickets is great. I'd love to hear more of the sounds around the pond! And absolutely YES to the hunt. Maybe do bow or muzzle-load for subscribers too? I wonder if the foxes move with the deer herd because the deer will spook rodents out of their hiding spots

Lol yes why not go overboard with the floating duck house! Too much Fun! That ‘glass’ bottom boat rocks! I’m a watcher since the very beginning and it’s so life affirming to see growth and continuation of ‘normal’ ?whatever THAT is😝) but it’s all the critters and wildlife I love more than anything! Thank you so much for all you do, as if farm life isn’t busy enough here you are filming and editing 😮I’m sure a few of us wonder when you sleep lol. Take care Love to family 🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️

I have a friend up near Tuscaloosa who has 2800 acres right on the river who has managed the property for over a decade. Every year state wildlife comes in and does a survey and lets them know what/how many deer need to be culled off the property. They actually manage their hunts very strictly. Might be something to look into. Depredation hunts are great for kids!

Yeah the goldfish become a problem for local ponds and reservoirs. Goldfish actually can outgrow your bass and there’s no easy way to get them out. They’re not a good bait fish. I enjoy watching these videos, I have my own pond though it’s a lot smaller than your lake. I get good ideas from you, I’m going to be adding more forage.

I think keeping hunting to an as-needed basis isn’t a bad plan. Keeping an eye on their population and behavior like you have been means you’ll know if they start getting over-populated. I’m sure you can reach out to deer specialists near you and get some advice. Who knows, maybe they’ll recommend more frequent hunting. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree. Maybe BamaBass could talk to his states wild life office and see how much land it takes to support a deer herd. (e.g. 1 acre of land can support 4 deer) This could be different from region to region I would think.

I agree your state wildlife office is the place to start. The local biologists will know your area better then anyone. They are the ones who do the counting multiple times a year.

Listen I'm a avid hunter, and think it would be awesome to manage your deer a little. However I wouldn't mess with it unless they become a real problem. Deer are smart and if you allow a hunt or two, make sure it's done as far away as possible from the areas you like to feed, you have to find out where they are coming and going from the property at you don't want them to start thinking your property is dangerous, they will become very elusive. I've had that problem on my own land. I had a very large herd and took out 3 of them out of 20-25 and did not hardly see them again for almost a whole year. 7 years later, I still never see them as a whole group anymore, only 5-6 at a time.

Being that we service RV generators, I would recommend running your generator on propane whenever possible over gasoline. Lp burns much cleaner in engines by far. Wise decision on the goldfish btw. Looking good!

I’m glad you mentioned the deer and hunting. I thought you had said that the cabin was a hunting and fishing cabin. It’s always bothered me that the wildlife are getting used to being fed and they won’t know the danger of getting shot. Hopefully you’ll keep it a beautiful sanctuary for the wildlife and not hunt them. I love all the footage you get. ♥️
