Exploring The Lilydale to Healesville Railway Line and remnants!!
Today we explore the non electrified disused part of the Lilydale line which used to run up to Healesville Station, we see old station platforms, trestle bridges and some railway tracks left behind in the beautiful Yarra Valley area!
From Yarra glen onward the railway is owned by the Yarra Valley tourist Railway (YVR) as plans to re open this part of the line continue and the railways preservation will help attract more People to visit!

Thank you for this interesting video. I remember way back around 1970-71 when I worked for VR ( I was only 16 or 17 at the time) catching the railcar from Lilydale to Yarra Glen Station and then having to walk back because I missed the last train at Yarra Glen. It’s great to see that efforts are being made to restore the line from Yarra Glen to Healesville. The Yarra Valley is such a beautiful part of Victoria! Thank you again for this video!

In 1978, with Auburn Primary School we went on an excursion to the Healesville Sanctuary. We caught the train from Auburn Station to Lilydale. Then from Lilyday on a diesel Derm to Healesville. This is a line that definitely should not have been closed.

Thanks for sharing the video! This is amazing showing the old railway history from Lilydale to Healeville and hopefully restoring the railway and the bridge need to repair an old trestle bridge. Would be great for touring travel rides to help fund historical railways!! 😉👌

The bridges and embankment crossed the floodplain of the Yarra river. The gate thing you mentioned at Yering Station was the loading area for livestock, mainly sheep into rail wagons. Yering was one of the first livestock ventures in the area and was set up in 1837.

The wheel would have been connected to the semaphore signal by a cable that would have gone to the signal box, the signalman in the signal box pulls a big lever which pulls the cable going through that wheel that you saw and the signal goes down and changes from red to green......

Awesome video mate. Its a shame the government doesn't restore the remaining line and rebuild the burnt trestles to Yarra Glen. Would be awesome if they did especially with the population growth and popularity of the area for tourists.

Good stuff man! "Railways of the Yarra Valley" puts that stretch between Yering and Yarra Glen as home to a 2 mile long trestle bridge which would have been incredible back in the day. Apparently it was filled in and became an embankment after damage due to floods in the 30's.

In the last year of running I wanted to photograph the tunnel, the passenger seat next to the driver was always facing the upside and the tracks curved as it approaced the tunnel, I was interested in approaching the tunnel from the downside (towards Healesville) as it was a dead straight approach. However the seat in the DERM in that direction was the engine side and unavailable to passengers. I asked the driver if I can sit in this seat to photograph the tunnel, I had brought along ear muffs because I would be sitting with the engine. The driver said I could sit in this seat and I was able to photograph the long approach to the tunnel whilst the engine said “aaaarrrmm”.

@@Victorian_steam yep. Google earth it first . Search Lebrina and follow the track east and west. 750 m long tunnel and Denison Gorge which is now lost picnic area. Research ARHS Bulletin Jim Stokes articles 1997. 10 chain curves and 1 in 40 grades.

Recently walked to Yering, l think the trail will extend to Healesville in the future,often caught the rail motors to Healesville, including once from Flinders st in the 70s,another stupid short-sighted decision to close this line,good that some of it,lives on
