Great video. Well done. If you continue on up the hill past Mount Sackville Convent, you come to Farmleigh House which is also connected with the Guinness family. It was purchased by Arthur Guinness’ great grandson, Cecil Guinness in 1873. He later became the first Earl of Iveagh. The location here is not terribly far from St James’ Gate where the main Guinness Brewery was and still is located. Continuing west along the Strawberry Beds you travel adjacent to Lutrellstown Estate with its famous caste. This was owned by the Guinness family from 1927 to 1983. So, as you can see, they were an extremely wealthy family.

The Guinness family in the 19th century was one of the wealthiest in Europe. In today's money they would have been multi billionaires. They owned castles and stately homes in Ireland and the UK. In Ireland they've owned Ashford Castle in the west of Ireland, they also opened Muckross House near Killarney albeit briefly. They owned a beautiful estate in County Wicklow Lughalagh which has a lake where a beach was built. Due to the peaty bottom and iron content the water looks brown although perfectly safe for swimming. Pale yellow sand was deposited which gives the lake the appearance of a pint of Guinness. I live in a village about 20 km west of Dublin. A castle that dates partly from the late 12 th century is owned by the Guinness family. The late Hon Desmond Guinness lived there. He was a very nice, gentle and generous person. He died during the COVID. He was much loved by the community. His widow still lives in the castle, a lovely lady.

Glenmaroon House is a magnificent detached, Tudor style, Edwardian house, one of two interconnected houses backing directly onto Nockmaroon Hill in Dublin. Glenmaroon House was constructed on the edge of Phoenix Park by the Honourable (Arthur) Ernest Guinness in circa 1905 and extended in 1911, as an addition to the original house, previously known as Knockmaroon Lodge located on the south side of Knockmaroon Hill. Both houses were connected via a covered footbridge which has since been replaced by a more modern structure and over time both the North and South houses were renamed, collectively, as Glenmaroon, or Glenmaroon House. The houses later became part the Holy Angels Convent School and were also connected with the adjoining St. Louise’s Care Centre. The buildings are now vacant.

What's left of the two mansions is quite lovely. The grand staircase was stunning. A lot of the add-ons unfortunately clash with the old architecture. And the church is just hideous. Catholics used to know how to build really beautiful churches. That thing reminds me of the nickname for a local church here that was built in the 1970s all modernist. "Our Lady of Pizza Hut."
