The first hotel built on the mountain was designed and built by 1833 as interest in tourism in the area increased. The structure was built with the intention to expand it, but was unable to compete effectively with the Catskill Mountain House. The Overlook Mountain House, owned by Robert Livingston Pell and designed by Lewis B. Wagonen, opened in 1871. At 2,920 feet (890 m), it was at a higher elevation than the nearby Catskill Mountain House or other hotels in the area. The hotel had capacity for 300 guests, and was destroyed by fire in 1875. The hotel was rebuilt by the Kiersted Brothers in 1875, and faced increasing competition from the Grand Hotel, Hotel Kaaterskill, and Laurel House. In 1921 was the site of a secret organizational meeting of what was to become the Communist Labor Party of America. The hotel again burned down in 1923, and architect Frank P. Amato was hired by owner Morris Newgold to redesign and rebuild it. This design was never completely built, as the hotel's elevation and lack of rail transportation made it difficult for customers to reach the site, compounding owner Newgold's financial difficulties. The State of New York acquired much of the land, and the hotel was boarded up in 1940. Further fire damage in the mid-1960s brought down a roof-top tower which had remained standing until that point. The ruins of the hotel are accessible from the main trail.

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What may seem an eyesore to one person, just might be a beautiful masterpiece to another. There are places beloved by communities and protected in the hearts of those that hold their memories of its tattered hallways and decayed rooms dear. This is the way that we feel when we explore places that have been forgotten by time. Left to rot and decay and only holding the silent whispers of what once was. We know that there are people out there with malicious intent toward these places that we venture into. It saddens us when we see the filth and destruction they leave behind, but we want to make something very clear… We are explorers and lovers of history. We in no way, shape or form condone the criminal activities that take place in the historical decaying places that we document. Social media has brought many of these places to the limelight, but the intention is to show the beauty and mystery of abandonment. Not to invite trouble. Trouble will find its way on its own and to say that the peaceful documentation of these places leads to criminal activity, is mind blowing. We have met so many amazing fellow explorers in our travels and are so thankful and humbled by the positive responses we have received. We know that this type of exploration is not for everyone…many people don’t understand why we find such beauty in decay, we can only explain it as a beautiful journey into the past. We invite you to watch our explores and come along as we visit these amazing places. As for the criminal activity that occurs, those individuals are responsible for their own actions. It is a terrible part of our society, but reality, nonetheless. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving this location just as much as we do. We hope that through this video, the memories held within will remain.

Every one of these abandoned locations tells a story. As content creators, we are the voices for these stories. That is why when someone asks me what my favorite location is, although they guess Centralia because I researched and studied it as much as I have, I don't have a favorite location because of each location's individual story. We are the storytellers, and our respect for the locations can never be overstated.

You guys covered that trip brilliantly. I climbed the trail (2.5 miles ,1400 ft. up hill ) on 8-14-22 on a very clear day with my brother and his wife.I found it a little tiring going up ( i'm 66 ), but the view was worth it.Seeing the Hudson Valley and Kingston, as the puffy clouds with the sun rays shining thru from the west as it was late in the day was stunning. The drone shot was awesome with the beautiful background music. BTW you two are a cute couple . I recommend this trip. Jim.

Wow! This is actually a place I've visited! Back in 1986 I spent a week at "1000 Acres Ranch" in Stony Creek, NY and during our stay we heard about these Ruins so we spent a day exploring the whole place. Oddly, after almost 35 years, it looks about the same as I remember it. Although, back then, I seem to remember that some parts of the roof were still intact. I'll have to dig around and see if I still have the photos we took. Great explore, guys! It brought back some fond family memories! And, OMG, I absolutely LOVE that you found a tree with "J+M" carved into it. Seriously, how friggin' COOL was that?!?!? :-) Valerie.

12:30 the man is exactly right the stuff embeddeded in the concrete is exactly that a filler back in the old days people conserved and reused wherever they could keep in mind that old pottery and glass while its collectible these days back then it was likely had no value and was destined to be buried possibly burnt and certainly would have been an unsightly trash pile admittedly though the square nails in the concrete is a bit odd as those hand forged wrought iron square nails and expensive for the time so its odd to see them imbedded in concrete with trash like that

Hey, did you notice some chatting in places, like listen closely at a place like at --11:00-- at around the 11:18 mark keep listen and other talking is very briefly heard. Other stuff like that is heard at different places while you were in the buildings. If I can find one I'll try to put the time stamp in. Like when you go in the first building and go up the stairs you can hear talking and the word "help". A fun thing to do would be to play your video, close your eyes and just listen, really listen & try to ignor your talkings and just really intensely listen....you might be surprised by what you might hear. The 1st building after you mention the fireplace & all can you hear the voices in the background every now & then? While on the stairs I heard a guy say "help" seemed like. Oh well I'll just play your video and come back if something clearly stands out.
