My parents first house was in East Cleveland just moments from the observatory. Historical place torn apart by time first & then vandals.
@johnwilcox40788 ай бұрын
The building is way beyond repair and has been for a couple of decades. The copper dome, of course, is long gone. At one time, someone bought the building and was going to rebuild it into a private residence, when it was still practical to do so. He spent a lot of money but not nearly enough, and it once again succumbed to vandalism. It is now in the same shape as the rest of East Cleveland, absolutely hopeless..As a former resident of East Cleveland, it's an astonishing fall from grace!
@artofexp8 ай бұрын
Although East Cleveland is in rough shape the observatory seems to be in a good neighborhood. It's true it will never be restored to its former glory but I could see the copper domes replaced with glass as sort of a greenhouse room or outdoor rooftop deck.
@bad74maverick17 ай бұрын
It should be restored and or saved. They made the first successful adopted telescopic sniper scope for the military in the Warner & Swasey scope. Few examples are known to exist but fortunately numbered.

24-inch (two "feet") refers to the objective lens of a telescope. NOT the length. And doubling the size of the objective lens gathers 4 times as much light. A tragic loss. People are despicable.

Thanks! There are a lot of tiny storage rooms in this building. I believe to account for the curved architecture of the domes.

This is in the corner of a neighborhood. Pretty far from the Case University. Somebody could make this a cool house with a lot of money spent on it. The is likely zoned residential , so even though it would make a great coffee shop or something, they probably won't allow that.

@@artofexp I think the 9.5 refractor, the first scope is still with Case at the University Circle Campus unless it got moved again. One of the larger ones, the 24" Schmidt went to Kitt's Peak in Arizona and it was replaced with a 36" reflector which went to Nassau Station in Ohio. Possible they moved again as light pollution continues to worsen.

If I were a resident in one of those houses I'd be plenty p***** off that an eyesore like that continues to remain unaddressed, depressing local property values, attracting a criminal element along with environmental hazards and inviting kids to explore where they could get hurt falling through a floor. C'mon -- there's not even a fence with "keep out" signs around it??? That is so messed up. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen at local taxpayer expense. Such a shame. I'll bet at one time having that observatory there contributed some prestige to the neighborhood.
