Someone ought to mention that Alan Wilson was a uniquely talented, singer, writer, slide guitarist and harmonica player. He sang lead on canned Heat's 2 biggest hits -- "On the Road Again" (and played the uncanny harp solo) and "Going Up the Country" (which he wrote). Maybe not Jimi Hendrix or Jim Morriison in stature, but a very soulful and important artist to my mind. Peace be with you.

@@morganmagill668 Al was a walking encyclopedia of Blues and it went into Canned Heat . allegedly he had very poor eyesight and didn't attract girls the way the other guys did. Back then you didn't have to look like Adam Levine to get it on ! Anyway there is speculation that Al might have had a form of autism although IMHO, like I have heard other people say, " Autism is over diagnosed ! "

From what I understand, Bob Hite's house used to be there, but was destroyed by floods. The ruins of that house are remnants of a rebuild that was also destroyed by floods. Alan Wilson died somewhere behind it, but I have never been able to find out where.

I actually had a conversation with Fito De La Parra from Canned Heat years ago and he was very interested in telling the story of the Topanga House and said it was destroyed by a flood, he described the house as a "log cabin" style place and that all of Bob and Alan's record collection went floating down with the house. . So this is the right property but this modern home came after Canned Heat's time. Anyone interested in reading about this Band can read Fito's book " Living The Blues"
@lazur1
@lazur1 Жыл бұрын
If Fito really said this, he's full of it: 1/Bob sold the house in1978, & moved to the valley, long before the Topanga house was flooded. His record collection remained fully intact in his new home, on shelves filling 3 walls of his large living room from floor to ceiling, (plus a 25 foot-long wall in a rear-building, with 'for-sale' records that he didn't like, (included in estate sales he'd purchased)). 2/As Alan has stated in an interview easily found on KZbin, he never was a record-collector. (If he had been, there wasn't an inch of space that wasn't already filled With Bob's stuff. ) 3/While the place was certainly rustic/rural, it wasn't built of logs, at all.
@ranchotexino4929
@ranchotexino4929 Жыл бұрын
@@lazur1 Fito could indeed, be full of it, I dunno! I was riding my bicycle in Texas at that time He did say there was still chunks of old records in the creek bed etc. Sounded cool though. but it looks like the old house is gone logs or not. but the music remains Thanks for the reply. Peace!

Last years heavy rain really collapsed the house. My friend and I would head out there at night and stay there till 3 or 4 in the morning on the second floor talking about life and having a good time. Super quiet and relaxing place, and its even more beautiful in the morning! If you've ever wanted to visit this place now would be the time! Who knows how much longer it's going to be around before it collapses even more.

3:33 that must be the hill where wilson died. i personally dont think he committed suicide not only bc of the lack of a note but also bc they found 4 or so pills in his pocket. if he was intentionally committing suicide it stands to reason hed take everything he had to ensure his death. also, he was sleeping under the stars which was where he was happiest. i think it was just another sad death by misadventure of the hippie days of which there were many. sad thing he was an incredible musician as well as historian and curator of old, forgotten blues pieces from before his time.
@lazur1
@lazur1 Жыл бұрын
If not suicide, certainly an attempt to drug-away severe depression, so not quite accidental either. Alan was unique, not part of the hippy scene, or the 'too rich-too soon' crowd.
@Stephan_Dixon
@Stephan_Dixon 7 ай бұрын
I don’t believe it was a suicide either, he was known to use pills to help him get to sleep and he often did it alone under the stars in a sleeping bag . I feel it was a tragic accident. Sa mentioned above he had more pills in his pocket and you would think he would take them all if it was intentional. The coroner did rule it an accidental overdose.

Thanks Young People ! Hope you have listened to Canned Heats music. They had two sngers , Al Wilson and Bob Hite ! Al's " On The Road Again " pops up every now and then in peculiar places. It is an eerie but beautiful song ! I hav a CD called " King Biscuit Flower Hour Canned Heat In Concert " and it was recorded long after Al was gone . It had Bob Hite but some new personnel and it was an excellent very tight peformance . It featured great piano work and some of the sweetest guitar tones I ever heard. Of course they axcknowledged Al and played a previously unheard Al composition - " Human Condition ' Again thanks for the tour ! Enjoyed it !

Alan Wilson was found dead on the hillside behind Bob hites house. Some rumors say that they were partying and Alan Wilson was found dead in a room. Because of all the drugs everywhere. They decided to put Alan's body on the hillside where they said they found him the next morning. Hoping to keep the police out of the house. There are many other stories of Alan Wilson death. But no one may never know what really happened. 🎸🎤🎹🎙🎶🎵🎼🤓😎

Yes, Topanga Canyon. My grandmother lived higher up the hill. You mentioned things that are dangerous therabouts. Don't forget wild fires. Topanga has had some bad ones. Now this will make you laugh. I am an old guy. When I hear the words canned heat, I think of a military item from the 1940s, for warming food rations in the field. And they still have a version of canned heat for camping and catering. But not music.

I have mixed feelings about those kinds of places.That whole area is a testament to lost people with too much money and tragic ends, unfortunately. Choose most any creek there now and walk up it. You'll frequently encounter transients junking up the place with garbage, shredding blue tarps, and stolen empty luggage. And, of course, there's the tasteful attractive graffiti to add an extra measure of tranquility to an otherwise wild but soothing place. Walk high up on the canyon walls and you'll find sleeping platforms built from garbage and littered with discarded needles, syringes, and empty drug bottles. Keep a really sharp eye out, though, and you'll find old rock sleeping/camping terraces that are hundreds, maybe thousands of years old protruding from the canyon slopes. And petroglyphs. But you have to know where to look, and get there before somebody else with a hammer and chisel. Enjoy. ;-)

The original bridge, during Hite's life there, 1966-1977, was a draw-bridge, that Bob would put down for guests. The ravine was much narrower, the bridge much shorter, not treacherous at all.

I think Canned Heat opened Woodstock. Either way his voice and stage presence were incredible. I do doubt he would get a deal today though.

It wasn’t suicide. He had a pocket full of barbiturates he did not take. Often we would take a couple to help him fall asleep. They ruled is death an accidental over dose.

Bradley Nowell of Sublime was 28. Its not 27, but still, its weird that so many top musicians died at around that same age.

Many of the 27 Club died within weeks of each other. Makes me wonder if someone was passing around a bad batch. Hmmm - accident or on purpose?
