I’m not far from the Catskills. I live in Dutchess county ny, but growing up my grandmother had a house up in the Catskills in Gilboa, Ny(Schoharie county). It was beautiful up there. Very rural though. We would go almost every weekend to visit. I know you posted this a long time ago, but another place that used to be a hot spot was Windham and Windham Mountain. Another place you should check out is Howe Caverns. But yeah, I haven’t been up that way in years now since my grandmothers passing. I get nostalgia thinking about it. The Catskills are beautiful! My grandmother moved there back in the 80s from Queens, Ny. She loved the quiet. I will say that upstate Ny doesn’t have a lot of job opportunities, so I think that also plays a role as to why people don’t move there or stay.

Really enjoyed this video as my family is from Sullivan County and I grew up in Ulster County. Your source was a bit off in the closures though. There were several hotels that survived through the 80s and 90s and a few of the last to close were The Concord 1998, Kutsher’s 2013, the Granite 2015, the Nevele 2009 and a few others. The Catskills were indeed a respite for city folk but there was also a large Jewish presence due to the heightened antisemitism in NYC at the time. Thanks for a nice walk down memory lane 😊

I thought that lake looked familiar. Awosting Falls at Lake Minnewaska State Park! We used to go there back in the 1960s with the family. My dad would load us up early in the morning and we'd take a day trip from NJ. Back then there were two old Victorian hotels there, one on each end of the lake. We'd spend the day swimming and boating (no motor boats allowed on that wonderful pristine glacier lake), and have a late lunch or early dinner before heading back home. The two hotels eventually ran into hard times and both ended up burning down and it since has become a state park. Nearby New Paltz is a great funky little college town to visit.
