I like to believe that something so incredibly inept as that abomination of media can only be the work of Azathoth. Nothing so perplexing stupid could be made with mortal minds; no it was a stupid beyond comprehension.I consider it a snore of Azathoth. Something dreadful that even the flutes of other Eldritch creatures cannot wipe away from existence.

That's actually infinitely more terrifying. Why? Because it shows we can be our own makers of our own worst dooms. We don't need a vast immoral universe to destroy us with less than a blink; we can do that even worse ourselves.

One thing I always wondered was what the relationship between Hastur or Cthulhu was considering they were said to be Half brothers. Then again, that was an expanded Universe claim, and considering how vast and distant many Cosmic Entities are, it probably means little to nothing in how they interact with one another whether it be more on the friendly or hostile side. Probably just equally as neutral.
@TheExploringSeries
@TheExploringSeries 8 жыл бұрын
+Darrius Cooper Yes actually, I do have an answer for why they don't like eachother, but you aren't going to like it. Basically, August Derleth decided that various deities in the mythos would be tied to a specific element. Despite this already being a stupid idea, he also made some ridiculous choices, such as making Yog-Sothoth an earth elemental, and making air opposed to water, and fire opposed to earth. Naturally, Hastur, an air elemental, and Cthulhu, a water elemental, are destined to oppose each other. No, I am not making this up, and yes, Derleth was a bit of a moron.

(True Detective Season 1 spoilers) I think it could be argued that what Rust Cohle see's in the last episode could be the cosmic rift that Hastur is communicating from. The spiral pattern throughout the show is an obvious riff on the yellow sign, so I felt like that was a reveal for fans in the know that it might be a reference to the galaxy where Carcossa is.

So, Sandy Petersen (the guy who created Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG) came up with rules for fighting this guy in 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, and he is as terrifying as anything. First off, it's not possible to beat Hastur as a group. He has an ability called "Quantum Nucleus" that makes anyone who is made aware of him somehow connected to his core body via some crazy form of quantum entanglement, thus forcing anyone and everyone who views him to fight their own Hastur core. He then starts flying toward you from Alderberaan, his ability to harm you increasing as he gets closer, and his power grows as he gets closer. If you don't go mad just by being in the area of his influence, he can assail you with psychic and magical attacks early on. As he gets evencloser, he can launch more direct strikes and his health gets a boost. Once he's practically on top of you, you have to make saving throws against being killed instantly due to his overwhelming presence. And remember - EVERYONE HAS TO SOLO THEIR OWN CORE.

What does Hastur have to do with True Detective season 1? During the series countless references are made to Carcosa, Hastur and The Yellow King. Does anyone know why or for what purpose this allusion was invoked? How does it tie in to the storyline of the series?
@TheExploringSeries
@TheExploringSeries 8 жыл бұрын
Well, to be clear, Hastur is never mentioned during the show, which makes sense, since they only really ever refer to The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers. It's been a fairly influential book throughout the history of weird fiction, and so its a nice surprise to see mentioned in a mainstream show. There's really nothing supernatural going on in the show, but the connection does mix in with a lot of themes of insanity and mystery.

SPOILERS FOR TRUE DETECTIVE SEASON 1 AHEAD... Well, I like to believe that the killer was not the King in Yellow, just another follower, since the cult was much older than that guy. And even if he is the King in Yellow (I don't remember if he calls himself that way), he is not pulling the strings, again, the cult is ancient, just like that place, that may or may not be Carcosa. In the very end Cohle sees something cosmic and quite strange near the altar in Carcosa, I think that that was Hastur and he indeed resides in Carcosa, or it's a link to the star where he is. And that view drove Rusty mad, that's why in the end he leaves the hospital that way. UPDATE: Just saw another comment saying the same thing, I'm seven months late.

this could very well be the entity behind the 3 fingers and madness in the Elden Ring. the sign has 3 sticks, he is always yellow and gives madness to humans, and most important of all, Hastur is trying to accomplish the same thing, to reach the world and engulf it with madness.

The High Priest Not to Be Mentioned, the creature that Randolph Carter encounters in Leng, might be Hastur in another form as he is dressed in yellow silk, with a red-yellow silk mask. When he takes of his mask, Randolph is terrified into escaping at all costs.

it´s so interesting the idea about the so-called King-in-Yellow and Carcossa city with this cosmic horror deity, and then G.R.R. Martin set in the farthest east of his world map, the city of Carcossa itself nearby an unknown closed Inner Sea and that supposedly there lingers a Yellow Emperor of the eastern empire of YiTi in exile for being a necromancer or dark sorcerer, and nearby to the Inner Sea there is a Winged-Men City and several cities with Bloodless Men (vampires perhaps) and it´s unknown what´s beyond Carcossa at the further east. Martin relyied heavily on Lovecraftian lore for the most mysterious and ancient places of his world of Song of Ice and Fire specially on the farther East and South of the world (K´dath nearby to a Grey cold wasteland, death forbidden city of Stygai in the inner heart core of the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai itself another darker city albeit better known, some largely unknown world in the east as Ulthos, the eastern most part of Essos and the wild southern land of Sothoryos, the last one even with a mysterious abandoned ruins in the jungle called Yeen very ancient and eerily untouched by the surrounding jungle.)

You mentioned doing a Mythos entry on the play "The King In Yellow," & it's place in the Mythos. I see also you've started doing the Lord Of The Rings series. Are you still going to do the piece on the Play or has that been discarded?

As a musician I can't tell if I want to write references to the king in yellow into my songs because I'm a fan of cosmic horror and I think it would be a cool Easter Egg and prolong the whole thing about him influencing creative works or if I'm actually being influenced by something myself and that really fucking scares me more than anything else in the Cthulhu mythos.

The maggots and leeches nibble at my toes while I sleep silently, screaming internally, dreaming a dark dream of a figure in the shadows terrifying yet peacefully mad. Images of a sign in yellow flood my mind making more sense as reality makes less. I wake with a headache, is this just another dream? I float in and out of madness, laughing, crying, screaming. He has me. The king in yellow.
