Exploring the Finger Lakes - Our top things to see

Our trip to Finger Lakes, in the New York State, was an amazing an unexpected experience of an area that truly deserves more popularity!
Our list of top things to do starts from chilling out in the small towns around the different lakes, from Itaka on the Cayuga lake (home of the Cornell university), passing trough the European Geneva on the Seneca Lake, till arriving to the beautiful Canandaigua.
A must thing to do in the area is for sure to hike the various gorge trails and be able to visit all the hundreds of waterfalls, that is how we spent most of our time in FInger Lakes. Our favorite hike, and for sure the most scenic, is Watgins Glen State Park (also the most crowded). We also tried Robert H. Treeman , Buttermilk, Taughannock Falls and Grimes Glen state parks. These are all extremely beautiful, unfortunately when we were there some of the waterfalls had dried up due to the scarse rainfalls.
One more must thing to do is to spent some time visiting a local winery and have a wine tasting. Also here our favorite is Dr. Konstantin Frank’s winery, with a scenic views of Keuka Lake. The Riesling and other white wines are a must try.
A special mention also to the 2 Splendid Bed and Breakfast that welcome us in this challenging period with COVID-19: Sutherland House Victorian B & B and The William Henry Miller Inn.

Last week, by accident, I stopped by the finger lakes region and spent 1.5 days. I can't forget about this place ever since. I'd say that this region is the most underappreciated destination in the country.

I grew up in Watkins Glen. Sure brought back many good memories. I have to admit I had tears in my eyes watching this. Looks like not much has really changed In the 60 yrs that i have left.

Last one year we discovered so many beautiful places in upstate NY. There are few roadside falls you don't need to hike or pay. Ithaca falls, Ithaca Cascades, chequaga falls, hector falls, Delphi falls, aunt Sarah's falls, I don't understand why people go visit time square instead of these beautiful CNY nature. We couldn't finish in a year, still many more to visit. So many beautiful lakes, ⛱️, it's gorgeous. Try to visit in early November, you will see beautiful fall colors too.

I'm from the Hudson Valley, but have explored the Finger Lakes. This was very well done. Another appeal of the region is its quaint towns. Oh yeah, and Letchworth State Park!!! Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains are extremely beautiful, well the whole state is, including Long Island!!!

Grew up just north of Rochester NY on Lake Ontario, Lived in the area my whole life…it makes me mad when New York is just brushed off as a city. It’s so much more than that. Great Lakes, mountains, oceans, finger lakes, the 1000s islands, and all the towns inbetween are all overlooked. I guess I shouldn’t complain though, it’s our little secret.

I am a native of upstate NY. I just returned from a visit to the Finger Lakes region. Upstate NY is beautiful . The best kept secret since sliced bread. Adirondacks and Mirror Lake are something to be seen too. Glen Falls NY also has the “ It’s A Wonderful Life “ museum. The movie was based on a historical incident that happened there. It is located north of Seneca Lake. Butter Milk Falls is pretty too. Too many people think NYC is the whole state it is not. It would be like stating Galveston Island is the whole state of Texas.

My family is from Skaneateles Lake the Legg’s & Thayer’s … I didn’t see Skaneateles mentioned in this video .. hope you will be able to come and enjoy an exquisite lake town parallel to none! A few shots from the drone footage at the gazebo looked like Skaneateles… ;)

I grew up on the north east side of Cayuga Lake (one of the long lakes). Stay near Ithaca, the Gorges City, and there are 5 or more state parks within a half hour drive. Check out the house in Ithaca that is built over a falls. Famous architect design by Wright.

@@Thoughtflux Try Rts. 89 and 414. They start at Lake Ontario off Rt. 104 and travel south between the 2 longest Finger Lakes. Stop at the state parks for overlooks requiring little walking. $80 season pass unlimited use NYS Parks. 414 passes thru Seneca Falls. Women's Hall of Fame is at sidewalk level

Watkins Glen State Park I think is the most beautiful, but be aware that is also the most crowded.

Difficult to suggest one, many small town are super cute. 1 city over the others is probably Ithaca

it depends from the trails, some are quite easy. I suggest using alltrails app to understand which are the best for you

You could easily spend a week there, if you check out many of the quaint towns, like Skaneateles. Also, if you drink wine, there are several wine/beverage trails on the lakes. Also the food scene. Then there's the Ithaca Farmers Market, the best I've ever been to, well worth checking out. One of the gems is Letchworth State Park, called the "Grand Canyon of the East".
