Exploring the ‘Geoda Gigante’ in Pulpí (Almería), Spain

Explore ‘La Geoda Gigante’, the largest accessible geode in the world, in Pulpí (Almería), Spain (Close to San Juan de los Terreros).
In december 1999, members from Madrid’s Mineralogist Group discovered Pulpí’s Geode in Mina Rica, a colossal mineral geode measuring 8 metres length times 2 metres height fully covered in huge gypsum crystals. It’s upholstered with gypsum crystals, some of them measuring 2 metres long. Its transparency and spotlessness make it a wonder of nature. Given its dimensions as well its crytals size, transparency and perfection, this is a unique phenomenon worldwide.

Hello, I was looking forward to film there as well, but you mentioned it is not allowed. I also encountered the same problem with a cave in Ardales, where they don't allow you to film. I don't know what their reasons are, I think this is very unfortunatele. Did they give you a reason? Thanks.

its to protect the environment in the case of the caves .... ive just been to the caves which are incredible the light from a camera would erode the ancient paintings and apart from anything else they would have been ruined with a bunch of people filming it instead of experiencing it ...

De hele mijn is goed begaanbaar en redelijk vlak. Om bij de geode te komen, moeten 180 treden afgedaald worden via een spiltrap en daarna een gewone trap. Om daarna weer bij de uitgang te komen, moeten deze treden ook weer beklommen worden. Niet geschikt voor mensen met een verminderde conditie of iemand die slecht ter been is.

Hoi Nicla, wij gaan volgende maand naar Andulusie. Prachtige mijn, mag je echt geen foto"s maken? Of alleen maar op bepaalde plaatsen? zie namelijk overal op internet prachtige foto's.. En heb je nog mees mustsee/do's in Andulusie?

Je mag foto's maken als de gids daar toestemming voor geeft. Als je de mijn wilt bezoeken, moet je vooraf even reserveren en ik weet niet wat de restricties nu zijn ivm Covid.

You can go from Murcia train station via Puerto Lumbreras to Águilas and I suppose there is a bus to the Geoda. Don't forget to make a reservation!

Hi Nicla. Thanks for the video. Do you have a link to this place? Address? Closest airport? Are there places near by where you can go look for/mine smaller geodes and/or minerals? Fossils? I can see this place is close to water (ocean)... are there any walks, hikes that you would suggest? A better time of year? Thanks

Marisol Jensen you can find the link for reservation of tickets in the description. If you drive to Pulpí the Geoda Gigante is signposted. Yes it is close to the sea and the beach of San Juan de los Terreros and the closest airports are Almería or Corvera (Murcia). In the mine you will see all kind of minerals and smaller and bigger geodas. Well worth a visit!

Thank you I shall be visiting the Geode in May I hope those stairs are only in emergency as I am 75 with arthritis and asthma !

Joan Fordham well you will be very lucky then as they are building a lift right now. At the moment the mine is closed to carry out the work to put in a lift AND they will open up a new gallery with a 2nd geode. Reopening is planned in April. Enjoy your visit and let me know how it was. I have to return (for the 3rd time within a year) to see the changes...
