When we designed our E153 to bolt to the 2ZZ, we found a machine shop that milled out the inner part of the bell housing on the trans, then had an "adapter" ring that fit inside. welded that in place then decked it flat, not the E153 has a 2ZZ bolt pattern. It really wasnt that difficult. Im sure it could be done on any trans. I also know of the adapter plate kit that lets you bolt the Nissan 370Z trans on the 2JZ, so there is that avenue.

First time I've seen a breakdown of a modern engine; partly because I just don't look for videos of engine disassembly. These look absolutely nothing like the engines of the 70s & 80s. My interest in this is because my 2017 Tacoma has the 2grfks engine. I was able to get the rings loose without them breaking. cleaned everything up, installed a new rod, re-lapped the valves and got it running, it sounds louder than i would have expected,

Are all the exhaust ports molded and merged into one inside the head casting itself with a single outlet? I worry about exhaust flow with these new integrated exhaust ports, i noticed Honda went this route too and I noticed the first year of the new bmwsupra did too, but then the next year they went back to individual exhaust outlets again. Comments: 1) The fuel pressure sensor on the low pressure line is a nice addition, the 2GR-FSE (that also used the same type of stamped steel low pressure rail) didn't have it. 2) AFAIK the liner is not sprayed: toyota-club.net/files/faq/13-11-10_faq_gr-engine_eng.htm 2.1) actually I don't know of any Toyota motors besides the 2ZZ that has sprayed liners (no, the zupra doesn't count). I wasn't aware of rebore allowances either. 3) The -FE and the -FSE blocks are different as well - this goes way back. The only non direct-injected RWD GRs that I know of are the 1GR (4l) and the 3GR-FE (3l, you gotta look for it - mostly middle-east spec, to my knowledge). Not sure if the heads from a FWD block will bolt onto a RWD block, might be worth exploring... or blocking off the DI holes in the head - basically anything to make it "runnable" by FWD 2GR-FE management. Still not anywhere near a plug-and-play solution, unfortunately. 3.1) There is an IS250 with a 2GR swapped in, keeping the 6MT. Google "Jeff Lange IS350 6MT build". The 2GR-FSE was offered with a manual in the (JDM-only) Mark X GRMN, so I guess the ECU calibration comes from there. -FSE's should be way more plentiful than -FKS's, so at least there's that. Again, still more expensive than an -FE to both source and (potentially) maintain.
@FrankensteinMotorworks3 жыл бұрын
You're right that the document that the info in the link comes from does not say sprayed on. I swear i saw that somewhere but i might be misremembering. It could in theory be machined then the block can be cast around it but i don't know for sure i guess. i am aware the FSE block is different. I still get this in an e-mail every couple weeks asking if the cheap FSE they got can be made to work. over a decade and counting now :)

Hey Marc! So the 5zvfe and 3vzfe bolts to the e153, right? So does the 2ar, 3sgte, 2az, and several other engines. Keep in mind, the integrated exhaust manifold ends up taking about half the space there is between the normal exit and the Spyder's firewall. How much of the additional HP is attributable to the direct injection ? The direct injection allows higher compression as well.
@FrankensteinMotorworks3 жыл бұрын
Technically no additional horsepower is attributable to direct injection but exactly as you say, it allows for a higher compression ratio which does result in more horsepower. The 2GR-FKS has 11.8:1 and the 2GR-FE has 10.8:1 so the power difference should be about 1-4% depending on the motor's knock resistance. In this case it's probably about 5hp or so. But this is just an educated guess. The 2GR-FKS has smaller intake runners which will make power earlier and will choke up higher end power compared to the 2GR-FE. But what we don't know exactly is where that "earlier" or "higher end" rpm points are. It's possible that the 2GR-FKS ends up making less power when the same general mods are applied to it, either because it's intake runners are smaller or because it's exhaust runners are shorter. Or it's possible that the 2GR-FKS ends up making power because the smaller intake runners result in a more ideal air velocity match for it's power band and the odd looking integrated manifold ends up with better scavenging characteristics. If i had to bet one way or another i'd say that if you're using the 2GR-FKS with an ECU that controls the direct injection you'll end up with 5-10hp more than what we currently get with the 2GR-FE but if you only use port injection and normal high octane gasoline on the motor you'll end up making the same or possibly even less power. E85 would likely make up for not using the direct injection due to its higher octane rating.

But then I notice this video with this specific motor that I’m interested in. I did some reading and found out that it is the latest and greatest of the 2gr motor. I’m far from being a mechanic im just learning. So please forgive me. Over the years I’ve been hearing about the 2gr motors being used in the mr2. I have a 1991 Toyota mr2 2.0 twin entry turbo charger with a 5 speed manual transmission. I never did much to it other than upgrade the suspension and wheels. The car has only 108 thousand miles. It s been sitting for years in my garage. I’m now retired from the military and I have some time on my hands. I understand that the 2gr motor out of the 2015 lexas 350IS for some reason is the one that’s pushing the most hp. And torque. Because of the way Toyota tuned it for the 350is and the 350gs. My question is. Is this a good motor for my MR2 with out too much madness. And will allow for maybe a turbo or a super charger sometimes down the road. I understand that you also sell parts that will help with the swap. Can I get a email address or a phone number. I hope you are close to Florida. Thanks

@@robertchen9686the 2GR-FE in the SW20 does not require any cutting or even hammering. the 2GR-FKS may have clearance issues at the exhaust since the head is much wider with the integrated collector but i do not know for sure.

Ok thank you. I saw your website. Very interesting. I will be looking for the last year of the 2GR-FE with the least mileage. Also preferably one out of a four wheel drive. I understand that they come equipped with an oil cooler.

I don't that much about engines but, I watched this video because I have a Toyota Tacoma and it has the same engine as what was in this video. I am wondering where the throttle body is located. I am thinking of cleaning it. It was interesting to see what else is inside of the engine. Thanks for the show. If you can please reply with a picture showing me where the throttle body is located. Thanks In Advance.
@FrankensteinMotorworks3 жыл бұрын
Stacie, I can't post a picture in a youtube reply but the tacoma has a different intake than the motor shown in this video. If you look in your engine bay you'll see the airbox on the left with a big about 3" around pipe going into the motor. If you follow that pipe and look under the engine cover(it just pulls off if you pull it upwards) the other end of that pipe is the throttle body. But with that said, these Tacomas have not been out for very long and they should almost all still be in their 5yr/60,000 mile powertrain warranty period and if you've got throttle body problems that should be covered. What issues are you seeing?
@StacieS3073 жыл бұрын
I am not seeing or having any issues. My Tacoma is a 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 and I have 26,500 miles on it. I just like to keep it running at its peak performance so that I won't have any preventable issues in the future. I am just thinking of spraying some throttle body cleaner on it so it could clean it and maybe clean the Port and Direct fuel injectors on its way to the combustion chamber.
@FrankensteinMotorworks3 жыл бұрын
@@StacieS307 Since these motors do not have an EGR system there's really not going to be the buildup like older motors used to have. Plus, just as you said, this motor also has port injectors. Those are there specifically to prevent any carbon buildup on the valve from the little bit of oil vapor that does make it through the crank case vent and into the intake. But either way, with the above instructions you should be able to find the throttle body.

How did this happen to such a low mileage engine? I thought these were supposed to be really reliable? This is the engine in a 2023 Tacoma I just ordered but now I'm having second thoughts
@FrankensteinMotorworks2 жыл бұрын
Someone took their sienna through a flooded road and the engine took a drink, this has nothing to do with Toyota's reliability. That said, take a look at the forums, this engine does have a problem with severe inclines. If you use this truck for rock crawling and such it does like to drink a slug of it's own oil and that can break things. This is an issue that 99.9% of owners are never going to run into but if this is your intended use for the truck you'll want to address this before doing that. It can be fixed somewhat easily with a modified crank case vent setup.

hi, i lived in malaysia where the temperature averaging around 26 - 45 Celsius......my question is for 2gr fks do i need to remain with 0w20 or 5w30 or 5w40? i noticed that i need to heavily throttle my car during 5w40 usage.
@FrankensteinMotorworks2 жыл бұрын
As far as i know Toyota recommends 0w20 across the board and these new oils are amazing. I would stick with 0w20. I race on 5w20 but only because 0w20 is not available in the oils i use. The bearing wear even after tends of thousands of miles of racing is not even visible.

@@FrankensteinMotorworks soo which oil you recommend for a high mileage 2gr-fe ?
@FrankensteinMotorworks Жыл бұрын
@@Mj3_ed In my experience taking the 2gr-fe and 2ar-fe apart even the high mileage ones do not show any bearing wear that would indicate clearances opening up. Unless your motor is burning excessive oil demonstrating oil getting past the rings i would just stick with normal Mobil1 0w20 oil. The Mobil1 high mileage oil is a good option if you're getting a bit of oil burning.

I replaced this motor at work a year ago, woman drove through water and the tow truck driver got there and tried to start it. Sad thing is that engine would of been fine if he hadn’t done that. The engines stall out before water does damage 90% of the time. Cylinder 1 is always the victim when people try to restart them I do ALOT of hydro locks out here in Chicagoland due to people just being oblivious to puddles

Very useful to know which cylinder is getting affected by the water. I like to do off road trips very deep into the bush with my 2021 Tacoma. So if the engine get flooded , remove the sparkplug from cylinder one and cranking the engine pushing the water out?

0W-20? What? That's too thin! That's gotta be for FE optimization eh? Would a 5w-30 kill this thing?
@FrankensteinMotorworks3 жыл бұрын
Why is that too thin? I even race with oil that thin. Clearances on motors these days are very different than what they used to be. 5w30 won't hurt it but the big thing about the 0w?? oils is it is impossible to make a 0w?? oil from conventional stock. it has to be synthetic. So by requiring a 0w?? they are essentially saying that synthetic is required without saying it directly since it would violate the Magnusson moss regulations.

You can bore them out a tiny tiny bit to get some minor scratches out. Some of them indicate 0.13mm max, some say zero but the 2GR/2AR are all the same material and method so i'd feel comfortable at that 0.13mm for any of them. Note that usually the smallest re-bore is 0.25mm so you'll have to find a shop willing to work within half the normal spec. You an also install sleeves instead.
