I absolutely love this tale. The way the actual working of the machine is left unexplained, the innocent fallacy of youth and the abject horror it results in, the way the essential core of the machine survives to this day despite having no reasonable right to do so... it's a force of nature bound to physical form. Supernatural, unearthly, something beyond our understanding enmeshed in mundane mechanisms and materials. And a monster that will not be put down. The writing really walks that tightrope of telling you enough to set a solid scene while leaving enough to your imagination that it fills in the blanks with what disturbs you most. The art of personalised horror. Even the graphic description of what happened to the princess is subtle enough to let my mind draw it in a way that is, I suspect, uniquely disturbing for me. To be honest, I find a lot of fiction misses the mark around that point, as it often tries too hard to describe the particular vision the author has, which may be utterly terrifying in their head, but loses a lot of its impact when distilled into words. @Daniel D, I wish you and your wife all the best, and hope one day you can return to writing such bloody good stories!

maybe I'm just dumb and this was actually really obvious to everyone else, but I never understood why this entry was called "Clockwork Time" until just now; the pattern to what the machine does to different objects is that it basically transmutes them instantaneously in a way equivalent to how other forces (natural or maybe otherwise) would given a long enough span of *time* , with each setting sort of representing a different span of time compressed into a short process. The problem is that there's no way to select what sort of process of transformation the machine simulates on a given input object, so especially with the "finer" settings, you might end up with some things (such as inorganic materials) transformed in ways that simulate the way that centuries or millennia of material science developments would be able to change a given substance (or like with the example of steel being inserted, what some more advanced futuristic manufacturing process might be able to make out of it), while other things like living creatures can be transformed based on some hypothetical future evolutionary form that creature could become. The "one-to-one" setting might then be meant to turn the input into something else that it could *currently* be. Or, maybe I'm putting too much thought into the name of this SCP, and that's not the intention at all...

To me, this is the scariest of all SCP stories. No monsters, no external threat, no end of the world... But the horrors made by a naive young boy, that could've been anybody. The morbid curiosity that fades into horror of your own actions. I've had this feeling once before in my life, of when I (not so expertly) vivisected a slug, just to understand how such a creature worked. It wasn't out of malice, but... curiosity I think. I was just wondering how it did the things it did... As you can imagine, I didn't find any logical parts (cogs, screws or such) that I was familiar with, but with viscera. And in that moment, I realised that what was in that slug, was also in me. And how easily I had destroyed a living being... I can't describe how absolutely *DISGUSTING* it felt, how awfully alien everything was at that moment. It almost made me vomit, thinking of my own actions... I've never done anything like that again until university. I ended up studying biology, but I tend towards botanics. I still have that curiosity to understand how things work, but it's tempered by that true horror I felt as a kid. I know that what I did was awful, and I tortured an innocent life. As a biologist, you have to do stuff (disections and other things) that come close to what I did back then. Blending living animal tissue for fractioning proteins for instance... but I never feel good about it. At the start, I had guilt, but after a while, you get conditioned to the things you need to do. Again, I'm not proud of it, or feel good about it. But this SCP reminds me of the disgust at my own actions. True horror.
