Y'know, this one strikes a great balance between old and new SCPs. The old is that the item is pretty simple, it's an organ organ! Just want to point out that Hastur and Carcosa didn't originate from the Cthulhu mythos, they were simply inserted into the mythos as an easter egg by Lovecraft, a simple name drop in one story. Then August Derleth, one of Lovecraft's friends who also wrote stories set in the Mythos, continued to use Hastur and Carcosa in Mythos stories.
@AdamRoss13 жыл бұрын
Derleth sucks. In fact, I can't stand non-HP mythos. Giving the gods traits like "elemental affiliations" and other very human concepts ruins them.
@Arkimedus3 жыл бұрын
@@AdamRoss1 It definitely cheapens them, personally I headcanon things like this to be 'retellings' that the human mind has attempted to rationalize, still, theres some missing spark in comparison to the og lovecraft works
@johnnydo71383 жыл бұрын
@@AdamRoss1 Agreed. The difference between Post-Lovecraft mythos stories and Lovecraft's original writings is like the difference J.R.R. Tolkien's work and all the fantasy rip offs that came after. It just feels like bad fan-fiction that doesn't understand what made the source material so good in the first place. Some authors however have done a decent job with cosmic horror stories by actually making it their own thing and not just riding off the things Lovecraft already wrote about. Two good examples would be Ramsey Campbell and Junji Ito in my opinion. Also, none of the cosmic entities in Lovecraft's cosmic horror stories are actually gods, they're just aliens who obey a different set of natural laws that seem supernatural to humans. The whole supernatural element was just propagated by Derleth in his "posthumous collaborations" and Chaosium with their roleplaying games.
@johnnydo71383 жыл бұрын
That is one element of Post-Lovecraft mythos stories I despise, the need the to expand upon every little reference or namedrop mentioned in a story. The whole point of them was to not be explained and add more mystery and depth to the universe. It'd be like explaining what the "Nameless Things" Gandalf mentions in "The Two Towers" were, the whole point of it is to drive the reader's imagination. Also, I am sad that Derleth's version of Hastur has kinda overshadowed Robert W. Chambers original "The King in Yellow" as it's a great piece of horror literature in it's own right.
@therefore_I_yam2 жыл бұрын

This is similar to a DnD campaign I ran where I did my take on Hastur as an entity desperately trying to enter our reality to escape Azathoth's awakening. Acting through a warlock, his goal was to create a big enough army of followers who could essentially dream him into existence in our reality
@DarkVeghetta3 жыл бұрын
I'm actually tempted to create a campaign back in the 1500s, with the PCs serving as knights in the Order of Judas and the raid on the castle would be their trial by fire, where one of them assumes leadership of the Order, after the previous one dies in the assault (either to dice or to me deciding when it would be dramatically appropriate). After that, any number of SCP and Cthulu-inspired adventures could unfold in Medieval Europe. But, maybe not. I'm currently already running one campaign and taking part in two others. Time will tell.

Definately my new favorite horror SCP, replacing SCP 3999. I love how it starts out as some light body horror and evoking a fear of going insane. Then it spikes up towards the middle with a tour of some of the creepiest horror tropes when describing the songs of The Choir, never dwelling on any particular one for too long, yet never brushing past the suffering they cause. Then the Crusade and the Foundation's defense provide a satisfying conclusion that the reader can still dwell upon. Beautifully done.

It's good to know you covered the last of Metaphysician's works. It's shame what happened for to him, espcially for not only doing Lovecraft inspired Scps but also giving us Sarkcism. Really wish we could what he could have written next. Nice Job.

I love the cosmic horror stuff. And that journal entry is reminiscent of some first person cosmic horror stuff. Love it

The idea of medieval Demon hunters killing eldritch horrors is so cool, Blackwood should have a Hanged King story

Reminds of Brian Lumley vampire novels read in the 90s, using living human flesh to build anything imagineable

Or Vampire: the Masquerade’s Clan Tzimisce. Degenerate transhumanist aristocrats who sculpt flesh into impossible monstrosities. Tons of fun.
