Exploring the Sierras: South Lake Trout Fishing

Good morning, fishermen from the Eastern Sierras! It's trout time in God's country. Last week, Ryan, Dixie, and I embarked on a six-hour road trip to Bishop, California, with a short 45-minute drive up the mountain to Parcher's Resort. After settling into our comfortable cabin, we kicked off our adventure with some creek fishing. Today on Stoked on Fishing, we're headed to South Lake to fish with Jared, owner and operator of Parcher's Resort and Sierra Slammer Trout Baits. We'll hop on one of his pontoon boats for a three-hour afternoon session.

Convict lake and creek fishing was my favorite. My toy hauler was set up to carry my 12" aluminum with trailer inside toy hauler so we could set up camp then fish any lake we wanted.

I used a Float Tube and would pack it to the back of the lakes, Convict, South Lake, North Lake, Sabrina and Long Lake. I also loved fishing Lake Crowley along with the Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir. I spent 20 years in San Bernardino, CA and didn't get married until I was 38 years old. Every weekend I would pack my pickup truck with camping gear, a Float Tube and my fishing gear and drive 250 miles north arriving Saturday morning after a 4 hour stop at the Kennedy Meadows Turn off, 395. Was the time of my life, waiting all week to go either fishing in the summer/fall or skying in the winter at Mammoth Lakes. It's the only thing I miss about living in California, the High Sierra's. If you should ever make it to Bishop stop in Mack's Sporting goods and tell Dave, (Kirk), the young man with the Red & Black German Shepherd (1980's) sent you.

I caught a 12.3lb Brown while fishing Lake Sabrina in late season near the back of the lake. I caught it on a 6wt 9' Orvis Fly Rod. I fought it for what seemed like 20+ minutes. I used 2x leader. Was an awesome time. I hope the next guy also released it?
