Exploring The Ultimate Arknights Iceberg

To celebrate the 4th anniversary of Arknights I wanted to make an Iceberg that encompassed most things about the community. To do this I asked everywhere for people to add ideas and notes to the Iceberg. And so this is the result of that, an Iceberg for hit mobile game Ark of Knights that covers most things about the community in a short time frame... Of 2 hours...

Loved the video! Arknights is the game of my life and this video made me appreciate it even more. It also made me realize how deep in the hole I am, I think there were about 4 or 5 things listed that I didn't know, but also it brought back memories of when all of these happened back in the day! Though I will say I kinda missed how you didn't mention things like the time they announced Bagpipe with the wrong, dorky face art or the whole situation with a certain twitter user confronting Alchemaniac (Skadi's artist) after they made AI art of her without the artist's consent, crazy stuff. But anyways, thank you for the video, I trully enjoyed it.

Just finished this masterpiece, it really made me realize just how big this community is for a mobile only game. I still miss "ANNIHILATIO" to this day. It was so funny, and we had that typo for A LOOONG time. I reached Gunplaguy's section and HOLY SHIT, that LUCK. What a story. You are a legend. Hello, I'd like to give a more in-depth explaination about "Thornification", since this is something started relatively early into the game's cycle (after 1st anniversary) and the explaination was... not up to what I recalled. To understand "Thornification", we have to go back to his artist, Huanxiang Heitu (幻像黒兎). Heitu has drawn a lot of characters for Arknights at the time (Sora, Lappland, Texas, Exusiai, Mostima, to name a few). Some people have noted, however, that they always draw the same angle/same facial expression, which has became some sort of meme in the CN community at the time. If there is a similar comparsion to this syndrome, I'd say it's "Saberface", which is a coined term for Takeuchi, TYPE-MOON's Saber illustrator and he had leaned onto the joke quite a lot. Anyway, back to the main story. After Heart of Surging Flame rerun was announced with its banner, Thorns was revealed and things were fine for the most part until NGA forum users noticed that he a, was drawn by Heitu and b, he also had somewhat similar facial angle like those characters Heitu had drawn in the past. So they started photoshop him onto other Heitu's other operators and soon after, everything just snowballed from there on out.

The "Instant Noodles" scene that Kal'tsit described is actually referencing to a Japanese instant noodles CM, where the actor did everything similar to Doctor (putting noodles/spice packages/... in the mouth, before pouring boiling water into their mouth)

Rich Cat: The lore talk is correct, but you're missing the origin/the meme started all the "Rich cat" meme. It's actually in the early chapters of the game, during the tutorial where Dobermann asked how could Jessica bought so much ammunition to begin with, which she replied that she used her snack money. The thing is, like you said it, Terra is constantly in war/conflict, and for someone to use their "snack money" and buy all those ammunition... hmm, sounds like someone filthy rich alright. This has been a joke since then and after the latest Global event, they've confirmed the joke. There is also something noteworthy about the skin as back when she received the 3rd skin, it was when the first CNY event happen in CN server, which was like... 9 months into the game; most operators at the time were barely/starting to get their 1st skin ever and this was around the time Arknights Global/JP/KR started to launch.

About Layer 3 with the Shipping. Most often in Gacha game, YOU the player avatar usually tend to be a "Harem King" where all the Gacha characters in the game basically simp over you as if you are Don Juan. However in Arknights, one thing I notice with "Doktah" as a Gacha MC compared to other Gacha MC is that "Doktah" never ever was portrayed as a "Harem King" where He/She will make all the Ops fall in love with the Player. Instead as a "Doctor", we are viewed as a Parental Figure and the Ops, Male and Female look up to the player as a Parent, Senpai or Friend. Never mentioned that we are "lovers". Although there are few Ops that genuinely love us the player though, like Muelseye, Blue Poison, Angelica and Gravel. I think there are a few Male Ops that hinted to be attracted to Doktah more than just a friend though. Otherwise most of the girls act like a "Daughter". Maybe this is why Arknights never feel "creepy", especially since the game have Male Ops that tend to be more fan servicey than the female Ops.

I have been playing this game for nearly two years. At the beginning, I wasn’t into the community as much due to bad experiences from being past game communities, and more centered in Destiny 2 at the time. Then when CC#8 came out, I noticed this little Twitter thread of comments with people saying the lyrics from Operation Blade/CC#2. I joined in as well as it was funny. Then out of nowhere, some chad made a clip of it with Operation Blade’s song where each comment matched the chorus. It was a little thing but it made me realize this community is not bad. A good gem. Everything changed when I got invested into the story post-Chapter 6. To this second I am tempted to be teary-eyed when thinking of FrostNova’s final words. Then came Patriot’s “Rhodes Island. I advance.” If he was truly real, I would be by his side in a heartbeat. That character is one filled with tragedy yet he still pushed on until death itself stopped him, leaving him as a statue in a ruined city. Chapter 8 though…Chapter 8. To me, that was peak. Hearing the music from Go Shiina, seeing Amiya going Emiya Shirou (all the while being hyped af from Cerulean Flame via “AND WE’LL BURN THE CLOUDS AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAY” trust me that was Super Saiyan as hell) Kaschey’s schemes; pleading Talulah to take control with Ch’en now trusting Amiya at that moment. The culmination of Chapter 8’s finale was peak af. Plus the fact that Black Snake boss stage took me over a dozen tries to beat. After the dust settled and the mission was a success, I was officially a fan of Arknights. To me, one of the greatest games I still have the pleasure of playing, with one of the most wholesome, engaging communities I have come to love.

Just a small thing regarding the whole Ai Kayono thing, She was not removed from Azur Lane, that happened only for the CN side of the game, which has also had various other censorships done to it over the course of its existence. Instead the global players have the option of using either Ai Kayano or Yumi Uchiyama as the VA for the ships she has voiced, or at least that is the case for Graf Zeppelin.

53:10 with regards to the whole "Money Printing" thing, there is a concept known as "Wallet Fatigue" that needs to be considered. Basically, Wallet Fatigue is when a customer has already spent the maximum amount they either can or are willing to in a given period of time on a given thing, so HyperGryph needs to be considerate about when they release any given skin as releasing too many too close to each other would hurt Gacha Stats and possibly even total revenue if they makes the skins limited-time as well, so I understand why they're being cautious, since it's not exactly the easiest equation to balance in practice.

At first I just click to this video because I have nothing to waste my time on, instead, I just invested into one of the best video in my life. I stayed in this game for 4 years now and half of the stuffs you mention in this video is totally new to me, especially about the code one. Amazing video, it's very long but also very hooking so I lost the track of time when watching lol. You have a very enjoyable way of explaining things and spicing it up with comedy. It was nice either getting to know more details about some things or learning stuff I haven't heard of before at all (that GORIE part was crazy and I've never heard of it, wow). Also crazy respect for doing the research, writing the script and then also editing so well a video of such a scale!

I recently started my journey in Arknights, i just got Lv35 today. Thanks for the video mate, it makes me feel a little more connected to the community and boy oh boy what a community it is lol It's well made, even a complete newbie like me got the jokes and explanations. Really makes me wanna connect with the community and dive into it. I got into Arknights because a couple of friends wanted me to play it and i usually hate gachas but it's really fun! TDBloons but for weebs. I only watched the Anime for the story and dabbled in some flavourtext in-game and i already want to make a D&D style tabletop game in the same setting lol To a great journey and a couple more years of Arknights.
