An interesting point was that the raincoat was worn originally by fishermen in the 1820s, which makes them a perfect association with h.p. lovecraft. While lovecraft never mentioned such bright things in his dark stories, it's easy to imagine that people wore it in lots of his stories. cults or lovecraftian worlds like coraline or little nightmares might hint to his work that way.

@vesanus560018 күн бұрын
@Popebug what you might miss here is: besides from lovecraft living in the 1900s, he was a big fan of the 1800s. When he wrote letters, he even dated them wrong & he tried to write in "old fashion". Therefore I thought, most of his stories take also place in the 1800s.

@ Well we shouldn’t be so quick to call her names. While she did betray Mono, we have to look at things from her perspective. She was dragged into danger multiple times by this boy who then let her get captured and destroyed the one thing she had to keep her happy. The Signal Tower could’ve been at play here as well, warping her mind into thinking that she was safe and so when Mono took that safety away she felt betrayed again. Are these good reasons? No, absolutely not. But we have to remember that they are all children and children usually don’t have good decision making skills when it comes to life and death situations. Neither Mono nor Six were in the right, and in a nightmare-ish world like Nowhere sometimes people do what they think is right to protect themselves, even if they’re wrong. She is a traitor, but Mono’s not perfect either lol

I love analysis videos like these! I would also argue that, even though its not a raincoat, Elizabeth's bright yellow coat in The Substance is a nod to the theme of protagonists/victims wearing bright yellow coats in horror movies. She only ever wears it as Elizabeth/the arguable "victim" of the horror. She never wears it as Sue or MonstraSue.

I just stumbled on your channel and I have to say a number of things. First of all: WOW!!! I'm absolutely stunned and hella glad that YT recommended you to me. I was BAFFLED when I looked down after my first video of yours (this one, I'm just coming back to it to leave a comment), to find you don't have over a million subscribers. You should!!! Like holy shit, you only having like 323 subs is CRIMINAL. I hope I get to watch you rise to fame because you deserve it SO much!!! Your videos are well edited, with an absolute huge variety of clips and images spliced together at not just appropriate times, but in an artful way. Your scripts are well constructed, filled with tons of research (and normally, when I watch videos in my favored subject matter, my autistic ass rarely finds new info--but your videos have tons of new info for me!)), and not only that, you're VERY well-spoken and your voice is just, so soothing. I'm making my way through all of your videos and enjoying every one! Even the sitcom ones, and I don't even like most sitcoms. (That said, I was raised on MASH, Friends, Seinfeld and Scrubs. And though they aren't sitcoms but aren't too dissimilar: Star Trek, Buffy, and Charmed.) If you take requests, I'd LOVE to see more trope videos from you. Like the last two vids you've made, the Grumpy Dad Adopts Daughter, and the Yellow Raincoat of Horror. Seeing you break down Enemies to Lovers, Dystopian Societies, Unreliable Narrator, and/or The MacGuffin would be rad! Either way, can't wait for your next video!!!

I’d like to add the Capital girl in the lemon-yellow coat from Suzanne Collins’ “Mockingjay” to the roster of symbols of innocence who meet a violent end. In the story, she is a young girl who Katniss is initially suspicious of, fearing that the girl has recognized her and will blow her cover. Later, when the rebels begin attacking the Capital, Katniss sees her again, trying to escape with her family, before being gunned down by the rebels. While not specifically a raincoat, Collins is very specific in mentioning the yellow hue of the young girl’s coat multiple times. Katniss initially sees this girl as a potential threat, tying in to the “warning sign” connotation of the yellow coat, the innocent girl later perished violently, succumbing to the curse of the yellow coat.

Great video, good to see this eerie colour and horror association so well explored. I know there isn't always time to fit every reference in (as this thankfully isn't a shallow WhatCulture listicle) but the original Japanese version of Dark Water also does amazing things with this terrifying theme. Edit: and also King In Yellow, aka Hastur, and the Yellow Wallpaper make great use of this colour.

Yellow Raincoat of Horror, you are a beloved horror icon akin to Jason, Michael, or a Victorian manor👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I like how One Piece uses this trope to trick you… You see a little figure in a yellow raincoat supposedly “haunting” the ship and it scares the crew and gives the viewer creepy vibes.. but you eventually learn that it’s a Klabautermaan which is a naval spirit that lives in well loved ships and helps take care of the ship and crew so it can see the world and have adventures… it’s unclear whether it’s born of the spirit of the ship itself, or an external life form that latches onto a well loved ship.. but it eventually becomes beloved and sad. But they definitely know that at first we will see creepy yellow raincoat and get scared. I never even considered why before now…

I'd say, the old usages of this were mostly just raincoats due to the weather a given character was in, since a lot of raincoats were yellow by convention (assuming post WWII America and similar settings) due to a combination of cost (compared to the earlier metallic silver) and visibility (yellow stands out well). The newer usages are in reference to the older ones, as well as just following the trope this look has become. ...now lets see what the video says xD

I got a yellow raincoat this Christmas after telling my mom it was a lifelong dream of mine to dress as the titular character from "Alice, Sweet Alice," for Halloween. She's a huge horror fan herself, so she gladly obliged. P.S. -- I sent both she and my roommate a link to this video. When I spoke to her this afternoon, her first words to me were, "Who knew the 'Gorton' fisherman was cursed?" To which I replied, "Yeah, I always knew there was a reason why I preferred him to 'Mrs. Paul's.'" I know this is cringey shit, but we're both old enough to give no fucks, lmao 😃

Thank you, and thank you algorithm! I do character design and wardrobe for mostly niche genre and horror movies. I had the privilege of working with an incredible script, a queer vampire romance, Australian/Japanese, feminist and bloody. Water is very important to female sexuality - see Bound. I introduced a red raincoat early on, one I’d specifically held due to its similarity to Don’t Look Now. Blood and Water and Deception/Corruption of Protection. Red should not be worn at death/burial in some eastern cultures, as well. A yellow coat arrives much later, exactly fitting its trope. Horror is my favourite genre to costume. You must serve as translator to your writer and director, you cannot undercut their intent, and yet it’s the best genre to show every possible skill you have. Not everything makes it to the Final Cut, but I hope my comment validates your analysis as much as your analysis validates the hours I spend deciding if I should let a character wear happy yellow
