The "telephone pole" was part of a power line to run the ice machine. The ice machine was not brought there as a target, it was brought for ice because it is hot there. Just a guess from a gy who grew up in the mojave desert . There are a lot of whacky things done by the people who live far out in the desert. It seems to me that the value of a telegraph/telephone line is way less to the miners than power. I have seen power lines strung on trees, so the poles could have been power.
