i grew up in ontario with no indoor plumbing and an outhouse. the trick is to use a chamberpot and the outhouse is where you go to empty it, rather than yourself. this means you only have to go to the outhouse 1x daily, never at night. chamberpot needs a lid and can be kept outside the door till you need it. keep the seat inside, though. lol
@emmahart89805 жыл бұрын
Where I used to live we had an outhouse... It was very cold at night :( I live in Australia, to make it worse, and once I there was a snake on the toilet seat... I thought it was just a decoration for some reason.. So I touched it... Luckily it wasn't poisonous and it slithered away as soon as I touched it but this is the reason that my dad installed a toilet indoors 😂

I have lived in northern Minnesota through 2 winters in a much more primitive / smaller structure than this one. This tent is really very well thought out, appointed, and executed. Whoever built it did a beautiful job.
@gachitadamunga24038 жыл бұрын
+Gachitadamunga The outhouse in winter seems like a major hardship to most who have never tried it, but in use I found that situation to be a very minor difference in comfort from standard indoor toilets. You DO need to keep a large plastic bucket and lid inside the shelter though, and in that way you have something inside and close by, which you can use in case of illness, or emergency.

love the tent. Thanks for showing us around. One of the reasons for a double tent layer is that if the tent is touching the frame, the rain would migrate into the interior. A tent over "the tent" eliminates this and, as you say, helps with insulation. Very nicely engineered. Love the cascading bunks and the kitchen space. I'm always prepared, like you, with my fixin's. To anyone wondering, these tents are very popular all year round, and they are used for one or two night stays where you ski or snowshoe in (from a central parking area or park office). They are not residential living spaces, but camping areas. Firewood, fuel and water are typically included in the rental fee. That’s why there’s so little for storage and and outhouse.

I imagine there are all kinds of water issues with, you know, freezing. I think I would want to consider a smaller scale composting toilet. But, that would require more maintenance on the part of the people who rent the property. I'm a little surprised they don't have a little more solar capacity and more LED lighting, though, I'm not sure how many hours of sunlight they get per day that far north.

Thanks for reviewing this tent created by a very thoughtful person--especially the spatial arrangements and the ingenious wooden bed furniture. I assume it's a tent for the sake of portability, because if it were intended for permanent living, one would reduce the steep wall angles and use closed cell sprayed urethane to insulate the walls with much heat to gain, and windows to allow. Myself, I'm thinking more along the lines of tropical living!

you can tell is a rental by the fact that is so clean and clutter free. any video with someone actually living in a small space is piled to the roof with junk that they are trying to keep dry. just an observation, if you do build your own tiny space plan for lots of storage as interior space becomes more precious. off grid means storing up stuff to make less trips into town. The old jug for liquids and the cat litter/bag/ bucket method for solids covers that problem. Any vandweller has that down. And you don't need running water for dishes. Spray bottles filled with vinegar or vinegar/water mix, or soap/water mix do an excellent job. The trick is to wipe everything thoroughly immediately after use, spray, sit a few minutes and then wipe dry. Works really well in small spaces with a limited water supply. And plenty of hand sanitizers for use as personal germ control on hands.

I love it. Congratulations. I retired at 29 to live a simple life in Cambodia. I picked up a one bedroom condo in a beautiful community that includes a pool,gym,and restaurant for next to nothing by buying it before they finished building it.The real estate company didn’t have enough money to finish the project so they were practically giving the units away out of desperation. I had to wait for 5 years to move in, but it was worth it. I have a strict budget of 700$ a month which i make double that in residual income from my investments. with my condo paid off this amount affords me a beautiful.. even luxurious lifestyle here when in the states i would have had to work for 20-30 more years. One of my neighbors is another expat from south Africa. She has many chronic illnesses. She has some sort of international health insurance. Back in in the 1950's they had something called a shack tent which was portable and could be dismantled and stored for the winter. The wood floor was on skids, and the outer walls were solid units that fastened together and it had a canvas roof held in place by a long beam that ran from the center of the front to the center of the back. Most of them were partitioned. They all had wood stoves and were set up in campgrounds in vacation resorts where the residents planned to stay the whole summer. They were dismantled in the fall. and set up in the spring using only a few people and it usually took less than an hour. Like this one there was no water or toilet...they had to use the campground's facilities. Most people also used the campground's sheltered stoves as well! Wood was included in the campground's fees which was less than you'd pay for an RV hookup!

But bears are so cuddly wuddily?
@susanmurrell6356 жыл бұрын
Bears would definitely be an issue...hungry bear + smell of food + material walls = trouble.. Why tempt the bear, and then it will be the one to be shot!....and you may not be around.....it's happened before.

What a sweet tiny home. I agree with you though, I personally prefer more windows and height. But it is very cool! Take care xxx

If the yurt doesn't have a Starbucks keurig micro station then I won't be watching.

This was a unique one for sure. I can't wait for the yurt video. I love how the round space and high ceilings inspire creativity for dividing up the living space

At that point, why not just put up a small cabin?...
@Colabear596 жыл бұрын
a small cabin build like this would be more expensive. Also more difficult to transport the materials to the site. Unless you do everything with man power cutting and nailing it together will require power.
@LaurelCanyonMojo6 жыл бұрын
the cost savings are very significant

Some people are strangely desperate to go off grid; or at least pretend to.
