In this brand new series I go back to Fukushima (Japan) with Frederik to visit the nuclear exclusion zone and show you how this zone looks today and we explore the last abandoned buildings.
In this episode we drive into the mountains to see how the exclusion zone looks there today.
We bump into radioactive monkeys and visit a pottery, onsen hotels and a mountain village in the former red zone.

That was really interesting, and sad. More than likely, those villages will never be inhabited again. Japan's population is shrinking rapidly, and many rural areas have already been nearly depopulated as younger generations have moved into urban areas.

In the mountain area it’s still high, because most urban areas got “decontaminated”. Normal radiation levels are around 0,15 microsievert and we had around 5-6 microsievert in the mountains. (Could be even higher in some places)

All that is really needed is to avoid ingesting contaminated dust particles when you're just passing through - a face mask will help a little bit with that, basically better than nothing. I'd personally opt for a minimum of FFP2, though. Same as I would do if I was grinding paint off an object without knowing what kind of paint it is. 🤷🏻‍♂️
