been working as a structural engineer for 4 years now. I strongly agree with cons "hard initial career and extreme pressure". I had moments where I just wanted to run away and disappear. Glad everything worked out. In early stage of your career, it is going to be very difficult. Even if you get your first job with your masters degree, there are so much to learn as an engineer. But you will make it through don't worry so much about it. Not trying to scare ya future engineers out there. :)

@@ashtonsumpter9811 Well, I took 6 math courses comprising of calculus 1, calculus 2, linear algebra, statistics and probability, differential equations and engineering maths. Calculus 2 and engineering maths were the most demanding. Differential equations were much easier because I had put some real hard work in my calculus 2 , so it was much easier. Basically math wasn't the hardest part of my coursework, there were other courses like Structural Analysis and Fundamentals of steel design which really beat the hell out of me. I can only speak from experience, but construction management can be rewarding if you enjoy being on site and taking care of multiple aspects of one particular project at a time -kinda like a jack of all trades to keep the project running on budget & schedule. Keep in mind that construction managers tend to work long hours. Just my 2 cents, hope this helps!

This video is very hyped up, perhaps giving somewhat of an unrealistic view of what civil is really like. Just to pick three: 1) Creativity: civil engineering is not very creative by nature. Why? because you always want to play it safe and create designs that have been proven to work bc you don't want the risk (at all) of something going wrong as people could die. Therefore, you tend to avoid creativity on the big scale. There is some creativity for smaller things, though. 2) Travel: Yes, you can travel. However, don't think they're going to send you to Paris or London. They will send you to very, very rural towns where your company doesn't have a local presence. If they have a project in e.g. paris the company will just get a local paris employee to cover that job as opposed to paying for your travels to go to paris. 3) High pay: the pay slightly above average but I wouldn't say high. This is very unfortunate bc civil engineering is difficult, not sure why we allow society to pay us less.

The up side, challenges, you will always be on a learning curve, you can travel.... Your work can be seen..... The downside, long hours, rubbish pay that goes with the pressure... two questions I would ask... 1) How can an earth worker earn more than the engineer who has designed the job... 2) Compare your pay to working hours, it isn’t great and definitely compared to other professions... I have been working for almost 4 years as a Civil Engineer and I agree with all the cons stated here. In fact, here in India the market is not so good for the field and its tough to stay in a job for more than a year and even they will not provide you a good salary as per your talent and experience. The work pressure is quite high and client and your company both wants you to work 7 days a week to meet the deadlines, you don't get time for your family and loved ones. THE GHOST2000 It all depends on your skills. An entry level engineer gets 10-15K on average who doesn't have much knowledge about the methods and technologies used in industry. Whilst if you have a good knowledge of IS codes, can work fast on spreadsheets , understand drawings in conjunction to other drawings, draft , calculate the structural loads then you are good to go and expect around 30k . Still remember when you're working that you are not only a civil engineer but a project manager, so you should know about the electrical systems , HVAC ,IT, , mechanical and plumbing system in depth . You should also know the architectural part because most of fresher engineers just forget it during execution and without it whatever you do is a waste.

I'm a Geotechnical engineer for 3 years now... it might've be hard at start, but if you have enough connection, keep your head low, learn as much as you can and work professional, in 1 year time, you'll get the hang of it and the job will eventually find you. But if you're so passive, have no friend, no connection and all, it'll gonna be uphill all the way. Some of my friends quits just after 1-2 years. Working 40 hours per week? Hah... Try 60/week m8. And if you're on "peak season" where project comes pouring down like rain, you gotta work about 100hours/week (±15 hours per day, includes weekends). But yeah the pay's good though...

Do you mean you have heart related problems? If so, it's possible to be a Civil Engineer so as long as you can manage your health problems properly. One of the CONS of being a Civil Engineer is the pressure and stress that comes with the job,but if you are organised and can manage yourself and people well, you should be okay.

Marcel Faria general contractors deal with construction and are usually on the project site. They do not deal with the math side of things like calculating load and building plans, etc. the civil engineers basically create the plans for the contractors to carry out
