The amps and volts of a solar panel array can be affected by how the individual solar panels are wired together. This video is going to teach you how the wiring of a solar panel array affects it's voltage and amperage. The key takeaway to know is that 'Solar Panels in Series Adds their volts together' and 'Solar Panels wired in Parallel adds their amps together.'

The only confusing thing about all of this is which one is best to charge your batteries? When living in the van, you’re using amps, and concerned with how many AH your bank has. Do you want to push the most amps into the battery, or the most volts into the battery? Nobody bothers to tell you which is actually preferred or which will charge your batteries to full faster. Could you please cover this?!
@Thunderst0rn
@Thunderst0rn 8 ай бұрын
Howmuch power is pushed in the battery does not depend on the series or parallel configuration. Higher voltage (more in series) means lower Amps for fhe same total power, thus smaller gauge wires, but more expensive charge controllers as he explains. You can calculate the amount of current into the battery by the power of the solar array (as you saw in this video all configurations with 4 panels had 400W) by rhe nominal battery voltage. Cheers!

With series and mppt combo you get the max output of your panels with the added benefit of smaller wires. Higher voltage systems give you more of a return on investment. In my opinion.

@matthewjswider You want more Amps for charging! You only want your volts to be slightly higher than the battery you’re charging! If you have a 12v battery, you want a max of 13-14volts and between 3-40amps for charging, 3amp is slow charge, 10 amps is fast charge, and 40amps is rapid charge. Since most solar panels produce between 12-24volts, the charge controller sorts out the power differences and turns it into 13-14volts for charging. The closer you can get your solar panels to naturally putting out 14v and 10amps the less work your charge controller has to do and more efficient your system is

Thanks! :) Keep in mind that the "50" part of the 100/50 is referring to the charge controller OUTPUT amps. Not the input amps. 1000 amps pushed into a 12V battery bank will be somewhere in the 83 amps range; so the 100/50 will be a bit underpowered for that many watts.

Wonderful explanation. I have a question which I think you already answered but I just wanted to verify. My Victron MPPT 100/50 controller sometimes turns OFF, stating Insufficient PV Power, and that PV must be at least 5V above battery power (12V LiFePo 3 battery bank). Today battery voltage was 13.8V and VOC was ~17V. I'm in Utah in the summer and this happens sometimes for 2 days at a time in sunny weather. My two 220W NewPowa solar panels are wired in parallel, with a VOC of ~20V. It seems like I may need to rearrange the wiring to connect the panels in Series, raising my VOC to ~40V. Does that sound correct? Personal note: I find it amazing that you actually put in the effort to answer all of our questions and I find some of your answers hilarious. Keep it up, please!

Hi Nate, nice job with the video. No matter how you slice and dice this stuff, people really want to know how efficiently and quickly these configurations will get their batteries charged, because that is the end goal. I have (3) Renogy 160W in parallel mistakingly thinking (initially) that the higher current of the parallel config going into the MPPT would get my lithium’s charged faster while in fact that is not necessarily true. It’s the output of the solar charge controller that really matters and how efficient (MPPT) or inefficient (PWM) the charge controller is that determines the amount of charging current delivered to the batteries over a specific period of time.

been looking for this education on math...so glad I found your youtube Running a delta max 2000 it can handle solar at an input of 100V and 10A and 800W Max...trying to figure out what specs of A 100W panels to use to string together to achieve no more than 100V and 10A and 800W OR even 100W x 6 panels for 600W and stay below the input max

you are awesome!! this is the most I have understood anything about solar so far. for clarity, i have a 1500w array of poly- rigid panels. i have been going crazy trying to figure out how i can hook this up on my bus. so I think I got it with this video. they are 250w panels. so i am looking at connecting them in series 2, 2, 2 (total 6 panels) and then connect in paralell and use two 100/50amp controllers... is that correct?

You can explain things so well, so please, can you explain why its more advantageous to charge at a higher voltage, apart from the advantage of wire size...I use a 100 amp and am charging back at 80 amps in a lower voltage system? but I'm charging back at 40amps in a higher voltage system, does it take longer to charge? I'm having trouble getting my head around charging back at a reduced amps rate being better???
@EXPLORISTlife

Higher voltage get the array voltage high enough to charge earlier in the day or in poor conditioner (cloudy/hazy) than a lower voltage array. Remember... the 'reduced amps' is just on the array side. Reduced amps on the array side doesn't translate to reduced amps on the output side. I think this video will help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJzFpGtqqKd7qck

Cheers for the video! Great as always. I'd like to pick somebody's brain on something. Can I use 50 mm2 copper cable to connect together a 48v energy bank (8 batteries) and then to the inverter? I have this cable so I may well use it instead of buying a thinner one. But, being a layperson, I wonder whether, perhaps, this will result negatively on the efficiency/ efficacy of the system ...? Well, that was actually a question in case somebody has an idea.

When you mention the voltage of the panels, are you refer to the Max VOC of the panel? And if we match the Voltage and Amperage what about the max wattage?

Most of us are interested in understanding how to obtain an inverter output of 120 volts and amper ratings of household devices consuming 8-15 amperes. We are speaking of many thousands of watts consumed at various times of the day.

Like the series but..is there a sirexr link to the whole series. Like Lesson 1, 2, 3…. On different rv forums we get newbies asking about solar installation. I refer them to your YT channel but I’ve complaints that it’s hard to find the series and I’m at a loss to guide them. Maybe a Beginner Guide to Solar in the Playlist. I watched series or parallel to day. Won’t be long til my 6-100w panels will be ready to connect.

So series keeps the amperage low so you can use smaller cables but increases the voltage so you need a bigger charge controller. Wiring in parallel increases the amperage so you may need bigger cables, but keeps the voltage lower so you don't need a bigger controller. In my setup, i'm working with 4 215w panels which i'm going to wire in 2 groups of 2 panels. That'll mean i could go with the 150/35 VE MPPT controller and not have to jump up to the 250. Now to figure out what size wiring i'm going to need..

Thanks for the great tutorials. if I have 6 200 watt in 3s2p configuration, the amperage will be apx 20 and the volt are just over 80, will I need to fuse the positive to 15? I bought your diagram and I didn't see any fuse. Thanks

Hi need help here I have 6x100 watt panels 1 20 amp 75v mppt charge controller and 4x 80 ah gel batteries 12v connected in parallel Can I connect the panels in 3s2p configuration and as that will give me 54v at 10 amps and ignore the max 520 watts recommended for the charge controller
@JR24-w3p
@JR24-w3p 9 ай бұрын
Not sure if I missed it somewhere, but the calculation of V to the MPPT shouldn't that be using the VOC figure not the nominal V panel. Ie my Winaico 260W 20v panels actually have a VOC of 37.9V according to the data sheet. That makes a huge difference in potential voltage supply at the MPPT. (I Think) Can you clarify that for me Nate.

Hi, pls can u do a picture diagram video on how to connect solar panels for a 48v system (Number of panels and how to connect them together (280w ,300w, 325w or 350w 24V)
@EXPLORISTlife
@EXPLORISTlife 3 жыл бұрын
The connections would be the same regardless of battery bank voltage. You would just need to design your array so that it is high enough voltage to charge your 48V battery bank.

Great info and yes very confusing. I'm trying to do a pv hot water heater system. I have 6 325w sunpower panels and a 100 amp mppt controller. I'd like to skip the batterys, wire this to a 24v element in the bottom of my tank, use a snap disc thermostat 140 degree. Assuming it will never get to 140 at the bottom of my 50gal tank. I will also leave the top element tied to the grid and set it to 125 in the event there's no sun. First it sound like I need a bigger CController. How should I wire these panels? Thanks Will
