I have to say I purchased the app based off this video Stefan, great job. And GREAT job to the team at ExplorOz. I run a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and the app didn't work when I loaded it last night. I contacted support last night and had some correspondence first this this morning from them. By tonight they have released and had approved an app update to fix an issue with my phone type and OS loading the app. That is incredible customer response and care about their product. I can see why the products that they have built are so good when they are willing to put that sort of effort it. Definitely can't say the same about HEMA.

in some instances old Hema Raster Maps are better, sharing and track logging is better in MM and the app and maps are faster and more stable. Planing long distances is still difficult with any OSM based product due to most POI , Landmarks, road name disappearing if you zoom out so old Hema better for that.

I'm soon to be heading out to the Canning Stock Route [once WA stops closing the damn border and the weather cools down]. ExplorOz definitely looks like the best tool for the job by a long mile. I do a lot of aerial mapping using drones, always in areas many hundreds of kilometres from an internet connection, so I really hate apps that require me to have access to a website, even temporarily. It's incredibly frustrating to accidentally 'log out' of an app and have a Login: prompt when you're 200 km north of Docker River. For a navigation app, I need to be able to download all the maps I need, and then some more. If I had a dollar for all the times I've downloaded all the maps I thought I needed, and then still found myself 'off the map', I'd probably own Google.

Couple of things I don’t like with it. You can’t access or control your track log from the app and I think you have to pay an additional amount for their tracker app too though I may be wrong on that last part. When you’re driving and you want to look ahead or move the map it will always immediately revert back to your current location unless you click on the target circle/triangle icon once or twice depending on if you are in direction of travel mode or north mode. Currently when you are travelling at any decent speed the resolution isn’t good enough to see where the turn off is exactly and a lot of the time I’ll drive past it when it looks like it’s still up ahead on the app, perhaps this will be resolved in the new vector maps when they’re released.

Your reviews are among the very best I have seen!! Clear, concise and precise! This review confirmed my purchase of the entire ExplorOz apps for our journey across the Simpson Desert in October 2022. I have seen these referred to, but sadly, actual location's are rarely given.

@@AlloffroadAu I'm confused. Just last year you gave Hema a battering but now you say their older maps are better? Why weren't they better before? You also gave ExplorOZ a really fantastic plug , I'm disappointed that there was tag at the end of the video that you had since decided differently about the best maps. I purchased their apps based on such a great review. It would be helpful if you updated any such videos at the end with a tag to say there is an update to the opinion expressed in the video with a link to review what you now feel is now better. Have you done a video for how MemoryMaps are now better?

from my experience Open Street Maps is not that good for any remote stuff like Canning, Simpson or most other Deserts it was also not good around SA and the Great Bight thats why I'm looking forward seeing the ExplorOz Traveller Vector Map's based on OSM but they have found a way to overlay all their tracks without making it available to the OSM project and share with everyone else.

Stefan, another very very good review by you, your 4x4 driving experience and subject matter knowledge and requirements shows through with a well presented video. You are definitely a go to guy when I need to fulfil my research criteria. I do have a question for you though, I know you touched on it in this video but I have been unable to find a definitive answer even on the Exploroz blog's. My question is "has the Exploroz Traveller app now have the capability to export Treck, Track, Route files in the GPX file format/extension?" I ask because, I like you do rate the Exploroz GPS and Track's data from a planning perspective, but my actual GPS device uses GPX file format which I am comfortable using and do not wish to change. I sincerely hope you can answer my query, Regards Paul.

It’s certainly a positive that the app developers are listening to feedback to improve, I think there are other mapping companies that aren’t as supportive. Would be good if they can fix the weigh point issue you mentioned, as understand how frustrating it can be when you want to adjust a weigh point once logged. Thanks for the review and feedback, even though I’ve invested quite a bit of money into Avenza maps I’m going to give this one a shot, as im always looking for better mapping options. I guess by the time you’ve bought the app, 2 in app map purchases your around $150, then another $30 to join the site it’s still cheaper that a lot of other options.

From a frequent user - an excellent review and I agree 100% with your verdict. One point, though. Stephan says once you drop a pin and make a POI (a "Place" in EO terms) you can't edit its position, eg if you do an approximate one on the fly. If it's an identifiable feature on the map, you can. 1 When you create the POI/Place, make sure you save it as Private (or in the latest V5.0.7, "Personal") 2 At your leisure, maybe in camp, go back to the Place you created, zoom right in for max detail, scroll the map until the crosshairs are accurately placed on the feature and drop a temporary pin (but don't save it). Note the coordinates. 3 Go back to the Place you created, open it for editing, edit the coordinates from your notes in step 2 and save again. Done
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 3 жыл бұрын
thank you, great workaround but probably would be quick to just create a new one. Would love the feature to just move it on map like Hema or Memory Maps.
@frankpaterson6291
@frankpaterson6291 3 жыл бұрын
@@AlloffroadAu If you create a new, public one then you have a duplicate, which goes into the database so all users see it. The administrators must sort this out because once a POI/Place is public it cannot be edited or deleted by users, only by Administrators. I am one such administrator and would much prefer duplicates not occurring. As a third party not on the spot, how would I know which of the two is correct? Better to leave it private until you have "pinned" (excuse the pun) it down with correct coordinates, then save it as public if that is your wish. Agree that within the app a tool to move it would be nice. Administrators have that facility in the on-line system to correct obvious errors. I really enjoy your channel - one of the best 4wd channels, 5 stars. No rip-tear-bust, just considered, technical, safe 4WDing. First class.

I'm pretty much a Victorian High Country traveller only and have been using Memory Map with the latest Hema 4WD maps and they aren't too bad. There have been a few errors, but I can expect that from any map and the only reliable maps are Rooftop that are not available digitally. I've just moved from a Windows tablet to an Android tablet and Memory Map is a lot better to use. I've tried many different digital navigation systems, OziExploer etc since the first ones came out and so far Memory Map has been the most consistent. Surprisingly, Here WeGo maps (the old Nokia maps) is incredibly detailed and an excellent backup, as you can install it on any Android device for free and don't need mobile reception. I used my Nokia 6110 Navigator (which still works) that was the first phone to have GPS and maps included, to navigate from a High Country day drive from our camp and back to camp. The ExploreOz mapping system reminds me of an old vector mapping program (can't remember the name) available from Victorian map stores but, for whatever reason, died in the ditch a long time ago. It was absolutely brilliant.

I bought the product but just could not get on with it. Map detail seemed to be very poor and badly pixelated. A tutorial on it might be really useful. Hm when did you use it last? I took me a little while to get used to app and they have made quite a few good changes. You need to choose correct map, if you have reception the 18k EoTopo maps are very accurate also in towns, if you don't have reception you use 144k maps. This will soon all change when they release 18k map in Vector so no internet required.

The only problem I have had with ExplorOZ Traveller is the amount of marked tracks that just dont exist or are restricted access, and there are thousands. I just bought this map. The biggest pain is you CANNOT plan & upload GPX without another subscription of $29/yr. And even then you can't do it natively from the phone. To be honest that would've been a deal breaker for me as I've collected GPX routes over the year. And planning for a trip is much easier on a PC. Costs are $59 for the app, $49 for upcoming vector map (the old raster map is sold with discount of $25) -- I'd rather wait. The rest of review such as map readability and POI information is spot on and excellent. Tracks doesn't simply disappear when you zoom out.

@@AlloffroadAu That would be a great addition. Also I would like to make a correction on my earlier note about loading GPX. You CAN actually upload GPX files without subscriptions. But the process is multi-steps as follows: 1) Upload the GPX from PC as personal track log (www.exploroz.com/tracklogs) 2) From app's data manager update "Track Logs" and it should show you the number of personal track you have 3) From app's map menu enable "Personal" under Treks and enable "My selection" under track logs 4) Then from app's "Search" select the personal track log to display

It is a good app...I go by the principal if I can not get a handle on a app within 5 minutes...it's gone! The Explore Oz Traveller app can be used out of the box within 5 minutes and you get the basics to get by very easily. If you want more detail you can look at their you tube vids or going to their website and looking on the traveller forum or look at the User Manual that is inbuilt into the app...something the other mapping apps do not have.. I agree that app needs some polish..1/. especially with grouping your logs and treks into separate folders so you can easily access them..similar to that of the GAIA app..and 2/. When you create a trek with many legs..you can select different colours to represent those trek legs. The creating of treks in the app takes a bit of homework, but once you get the basics down..it starts to become second nature in creating your own trek. The owners of Explore Oz have been pushing out a lot of updates for the app over the last 18 months and the app is getting better all the time..Hema has been struggling and in some cases completely non existent with their updates. A very good report..
