@AlloffroadAu19 сағат бұрын
Yeah, I had some. They do work, but they are a bit cumbersome (at least the on-valve one) as you need to take them off for each air up or down. I used them on one trip and have never used them again. They are probably more important for faster dirt road driving than actual desert driving.

While along that area, more on the New England Hwy side, did you stop by Burning Mountain Nature Reserve around Wingen? If unfamiliar, It's a short 4kms return walk to the burning mountain itself from the carpark. It's amazing to see that this naturally burning coal seam has been smouldering underground for over 5500 years and expected to continue to burn for another 2000+ years.

I can confirm that Ladies Well and the surrounding campsites seems to attract the wrong camping crowd. Both times we've been there, there was always a group that were inconsiderate to other campers by continuing to play loud music and regularly screeming and laughing out loud all throughout the night and till morning. I have a pair of old shoes hanging in Boot Hill, that I left there in 2022. 😁

My personal experience with the iNReach mini 2 is that it worked flawlessly on a multi day hunting trip in mountainous terrain in steep canyon terrain. The battery life was never an issue as I keep a solar charger on to keep the battery full. I never had any problems messaging out. My contacts got all my check ins no problem. I’ve never used a zoleo so I can’t speak for it.

It should be pointed out that Gaia is brilliant for hiking. Some of the limitations when used for 4wding aren't relevant for hiking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ-7Zqxvo9yrfac
@AlloffroadAu5 күн бұрын
yea, more for the US. For Australia, the maps are more limited, and the contour, tracks and shading are very indistinguishable; I also had it completely fail on my one-day walking trip where it crashed and would refuse to load again, even after the phone restarted, so I never rely on a single app especially when hiking. But yes, Gaia definitely has some great features, especially for route planning, and if I need to plan a route, I often do that on the Mac at home on Gaia and then import to MMFA.
@kevinmcgennan81105 күн бұрын
@@AlloffroadAu Most of my hiking is in the Vic High Country and Tasmania. I don't find any problem with the contours, tracks or shading. Maybe have a look at the link I mentioned when you get a chance. Yes no app is perfect, great point about not relying on a single app.
@AlloffroadAu5 күн бұрын
Yeah, I just had another look, it looks better now. It has been a while since I last used it. As I said, Gaia has great features, and if you walk, it's much easier to download the maps for your route. For 4WD, I still would not use it unless I can download all maps. We had plenty of instances where plans changed completely, and we ended up somewhere very different. With devices having enough RAM and HD space nowadays, I don't understand why I can't download the whole of Australia. I don't mind a 50GB download.

Could you explain please what you mean by 25k maps. 25K maps as opposed to what other sorts? I notice for instance you have, for example, Vic topo maps 25K as well as 50K. Could you explain the difference between the two and why you might need both? TIA.
@AlloffroadAu6 күн бұрын
Alright, imagine you have a big, beautiful drawing of your favourite park. Now, let’s say you want to make a tiny version of that drawing so you can carry it around in your pocket. Raster map scaling is a bit like that. When you see something like 1:25k or 1:50k on a map, it tells you how much smaller the drawing (map) is compared to the real place. 1:25k means that 1 centimetre on the map equals 25,000 centimetres in real life. Think of it as if you took your park drawing and made everything 25,000 times smaller. This means you get more detail because you’re making a smaller area look bigger on the map. 1:50k means that 1 centimetre on the map equals 50,000 centimetres in real life. It’s like making the park drawing 50,000 times smaller. This version will show a bigger area but with less detail than the 1:25k map. So, 1:25k is like a closer look at a smaller piece of the park, while 1:50k is a look at a larger piece of the park but not as close up. So, for detailed trail navigation, go with 1:25k. For big-picture planning, use 1:1M.

@AlloffroadAu6 күн бұрын
have a look at my older MM reviews and you can compare differences
@moikehunt89287 күн бұрын
Great video but being new to these advanced map apps 80% of your content was over my head. I just downloaded MMFA for a look see and was immediately stumped with zooming into my particular places of interest. I could only zoom down to about 2Klm but as soon as I lifted my fingers it would spring back to maybe 5Klms. I would like to get in even closer than 1 or 2 klms, am I doing something wrong or is that a limitation of the maps? For instance, on Google maps I can zoom right down to 10 Mtrs without issue albeit with less content/detail than MMFA.
@AlloffroadAu6 күн бұрын
yep, raster maps, unlike vector maps, can't change scale, so you would need to choose, for instance, a 25k topo map if you want to zoom in closer. Both have pros and cons vector maps are better if you zoom in but bad for overview as they loose most detail raster maps you have different scales and the content which is displayed on the map wont change

memory maps stopped offering 25k maps for Tasmania a while back, which is probably a good thing because the maps they were offering must be nearly 40 years old and I find in most areas the tracks shown no longer exist and that there's logging superhighways all the areas that show no tracks. I wish they'd figure out a new 25k map cos I'd like to keep using memory maps but I'm getting sick of persevering with the old ones

Could disagree in some cases regards Epirb - PLB statement.? In FNQ a messenger unit can get you a faster response than an Epirb Which in a case of snakebite as an example time is the key to survival. A message to local station owner could see help arrive much earlier than a message to rescue centre. plus the person you are messaging has local first hand knowledge of the area which would aid them in locating you also.. So people need to think of where they will actually be and select / use the means that will gain them the quickest response time if it is needed. Either or iether sort it out before you find yourself in the situation. Just an example of the urgency in time - a bite from a brown snake or coastal taipan can kill inside an hour. That doesn't give you a lot of time to play with. Safe travels
@AlloffroadAu8 күн бұрын
yes agree, but I would say in the vast majority of cases people don’t have contacts close by and if you are in that situation you probably know that a messenger is the better alternative for you.

I've been using Memory Maps since your last recommendation and have used it on a few long trips. I use it on my iPhone 14 mounted to the dash and it works great, I highly recommend. The only thing I found was that the 'Keep screen on' setting only worked when 'Full screen' was turned off. On iPhone the app is difficult to get out of using the home button gesture, you end up just scrolling on the map. However I discovered that with full screen turned off its much easier to exit the app.

basic functionality is very easy, especially if you use other apps; advanced stuff sometimes needs the manual. That means you can install the maps on all your devices, Windows PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android. You can not give a copy to a friend or colleague."
