In China an explosion devastated the port of Tianjin, near Beijing. The blast was large enough to be seen from space and registered as 2.9 on the earthquake scale but how did an explosion that detonated with the force of over 300 tonnes on TNT happen?

The craziest thing about this gigantic explosion is that it was only 2% the force of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and did not expose people to a gamma pulse or radioactive fallout. The most eye-opening thing about this blast is how much worse the blast over Hiroshima must have been on so many levels.

Almost to the day 5 years later, an explosion almost 4X larger of 2700 TONS of Ammonium Nitrate leveled a large portion of Beirut. (2700 tons of Ammonium Nitrate was equated to 1100 tons of TNT, while Tianjin's blast was equated to 300 tons of TNT) Based upon what Beirut officials saw at Tianjin, they had FIVE YEARS to preemptively reduce/eliminate the risk. ( Tianjin: August 12, 2015 vs. Beirut: August 4, 2020)

"Texas City explosion of 1947, industrial disaster sparked by the fire and explosion of the SS Grandcamp on April 16-17, 1947, in Texas City, Texas. The blast set off a chain of fires as well as a 15-foot (4.5-metre) tidal wave. Between 400 and 600 people were killed, with as many as 4,000 injured."

The people that were in charge of that facility and knew what was stored there probably already fled the scene. So no info was available. The video of the guy and his wife in a nearby apartment that filmed this was absolutely mindblowing. Typical Chinese style negligence, not surprised at all.

What's shocking is not the explosion but how common it is that rules are ignored because the true reason will never be communicated anyway

Calcium Carbide, We used this in it's natural form to fuel Miner's acetylene Lamps. My Father and I used these exploring old Hard Rock Mines. Not near as good as Battery powered lamps but you just need the CalCarb rocks and water to have light, instead of carrying extra Batteries. And if you walk into dead air, no O2, they go out as a warning where batteries would keep working and you're dead. There are heavy gases that pool in abandoned mines. Everything from C O2, which is heavier than O2 and will collect in Un-ventilated low spots. And there are gases that come from rotting timbers, timbers used to support the back of the mine. Walk into those and you don't get a second breath, not consciously. A few breaths more and your gone.
