This 'gift' for Benjamin was literally custom-tailored by Nikken. He's able to analyse the styles of his friends down to a T. Gosh, those shoulder positions were brutal! I guess Teo has nine lives? Loved the thumbnail, camera angles and the music as always ;)

Second this, it's not as flashy but these old school boulders to me are amazing to watch, I love it when you can see it's a struggle to hold on.

@@theoneandonlyAeth Thirded , absolutely love seeing boulders where every other move is a struggle. Part of what makes climbing so amazing to me, sheer power of will to hold on.
@Davidsc00002 жыл бұрын
@@theoneandonlyAeth have a look at the sisu masters. That’s such an incredible climbing competition format, I love everything about it. Each competitor creates his/her own boulder and then has to complete all other problems while they can watch each other try hard. Like there is the team vs the wall aspect and the problems are crazy hard. And to be honest it might not have as big holds as nowadays and be an artwork on the wall, but the movement is way beyond aesthetic and pleasing to watch.
@ShakespeareanBroncobuster2 жыл бұрын
Nikken, the beauty of setting is that you don’t have to pick function over form. The problem itself may not be as aesthetically pleasing. However, the movement, or the act of climbing, forced by the boulder is a form of art itself. It could be argued that the movement in climbing is where the beauty lies.

Super-impressive sends from all. Loved Kristoffer's little toe-hook detail to move his left hand (how did he catch that first go?), Benji's lanky fluidity, Theo's desperate, unadulterated power. I imagine seeing Theo progress is sort of like a mini-version of Dave Graham's meteoric ascent. Dude's an animal on the wall.

Fully sick boulder set Nikken! I'm tall like Benjamin and would love a problem like this where I could use my length and not feel bunched a cramped on a problem for once! And what I like even more is that the rest of the boys found beta that worked for them. That drop knee was dope!!!!!!!!!!
@PowderCaptain2 жыл бұрын
Wow. Really loved this episode. Great work Eric, you are the GOAT. Props to Nikken for the great problem, Teo for breaking the beta in a super smooth way, Ben for sending it and being super tall and chill like me, and then Kristoffer almost flashing that!

TEO IS SUCH A CRUSHER!! Where did Micky go? Also I personally like seeing this old school stuff, but what is being set depends on the audience you want to attract. If you're trying to draw in non/new climbers, then more of the dynamic/parkour stuff would work (I think that fact that Magnus is so dynamic is definitely a part of why his channel has been so successful). But for more experienced climbers I think old school is the way to go

I think boulders with less obvious holds and understated aesthetics have their own kind of beauty. A lot of the most beautiful lines on rock are very minimal, and scarcity can be just as striking as the sweeping aretes and large-scale features. Boulders like that can exemplify the challenge of the climb - a sparse collection of possibilities, somewhere between purpose-made and total luck, and altogether the kind of thing that compels the imagination to think of how it might be climbed. Aside from the beauty of minimalism itself (which can be spectacular on its own, on either rock or plastic), I think those lines are brought into focus when someone climbs on them - rather than just the holds you see the movement connecting them. The line isn’t in the features, it’s in the climb.
