I rewatched this video again paying attention to the finer details. Tobias mentioned many golden tips fairly quickly or demonstrated them and even though there were brief,they are clear and immensely valuable. This video is a must watch...one of the best I have seen online addressing issues not covered by others. Looking forward to the subsequent parts.

Hi Tobias, great video really helped to clear up some points on how to use the directional split step, was just wondering whatkind of split step is used after performing a drop from the back court as it can be used defensively and offesively? Keep up the good content
@tobiaswadenka84355 жыл бұрын
It depends on the trajectory of your shot. If you play a drop really close to the net the return will most likely be very short or long again so you don't have to cover your midcourt. If you play faster dropshot the opponent can also push it a little more into your court. In both cases your footposition should be offensive so one foot in front, but in the second case usually a bit more neutral.

@@tobiaswadenka8435 do you recommend we always split step sidewards first when opponent hits and then add appropriate directional split step to then aim in the direction we want to go to, or always split directionally towards where we want to go to?
@tobiaswadenka84355 жыл бұрын
@@chitung2277 try to split into the direction where you want to go if possible and avoid another split or correction steps. In offensive situations that will be a lot easier, in defensive situations you should use a neutral footposition and have to adjust if your opponent is not smashing to the sidelines
@chitung22775 жыл бұрын
That is the perfect answer... Thank you very much.
@chitung22775 жыл бұрын
Also if i may ask one more question please...when exactly should we do the split step..if we know clearly where the shuttle is going that's easy. But maybe for side defence we don't so we might split the moment opponent smashes and then decide which direction to lean towards. Correct? If you could be very specific with the timing please e.g. a milii second after opponent hits and we see the shuttle leaves their racquet, etc

Excellent tip, without corny humor, love it! Just subscribed! Can you explain more about pronation and supination, and how and when to apply it? Keep up the excellent work!
@tobiaswadenka84355 жыл бұрын
Thank you =) You need both, pronation and supination in almost every shot. By moving the elbow towards the shuttle your arm will supinate (forehandshots) or pronate (backhandshots) what creates the backswing of your racket. In the hittingphase you rotate the other way round so pronation in forehandshots and supination in backhandshots. If you look at the biomechanics of the different shots they are all very similiar and follow the same principals.

5:40 In part 1 you said that you want to try to push off with your feet right when you land but here you said that you can change your position to get to the specific corner. How would you do that when first landing, or would you just do another split step, thank you!
@tobiaswadenka84354 жыл бұрын
Good question and both is possible but I would just use a second split step if the opponent completly tricked you and your starting position and the position of you body weight is totally off. In most cases you can push with the landing and do some small corrections with the other foot to cover different corners. In the scene that you mentioned i do that in the second "example": I start like i expect a smash to my left side so i push with the right foot but then I reposition my left foot to change the direction to the front court, but still use power from my push with the right leg

Awesome!... does the muscular strength of the leg matter in this prep jump and footwork ? Should we be able to squat twice our bodyweight ?
@tobiaswadenka84355 жыл бұрын
Yes especially explosive strenght and a high rate of force development help a lot. When you have a high maximal strenght compared to your bodyweight you will definitly be explosive in your legs. Squatting twice your bodyweight is extremly strong but you need a very good technique and have to be careful and experienced to work with that kind of load. I am sure that there are several topplayers that cant do 200% bodyweight

Great explanation, but I'm still struggling with the timing of the SS. If you are in mid air when the opponent hits the shuttle, how can you get your push off foot into the correct splayed position to move efficiently? You will surely have to make some late adjustment on landing depending which corner the shuttle is headed? Any drills for this please?
@tobiaswadenka84354 жыл бұрын
Anticpation is key if you want to use directional split steps so you can only do it, if you have a clue during the jump, where the opponent will play. In most cases you can do it when you are in offense and the opponent is under pressure. There it is so much easier to read the situation and your opponent is also limited with his options. I talk about it in the advanced footwork tutorial in the part about Lin Dan and a there i also give some tips for drills. you can find the video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnjao6amdtCCZqc

@@tobiaswadenka8435 thank you for your reply. I think I possibly have better racquet skills than my regular singles opponent but he has better game reading from his high experience in squash so I'm generally under more pressure and feel off balance. When I look at top players they never look off balance even if under pressure. Therefore I believe the Momota drill might be the best one for me?
