In this video break down the process that I go through when using off camera flash. It will always be this; expose for ambient, then add flash. Might seem simple, but can be difficult when starting out. Hopefully this video clears things up. Enjoy!

I would love to see something along the lines of Making the best of your conditions. I had mini sessions the other day, no leaves on the trees and I did my best to work with turning ladies away from the sun and lighting them up, but really struggled with that

Love what you are trying to do: making it simplified and easy 2 steps process, however, if I could give a suggestion: Would it be possible to have some visual representation of what you said so it’s easier to follow along? ie. Doubling the ISO, so either compensate by closing down f stops or up the shutter speed? Or maybe I just need to watch this one again when I’m more awake 😅

Love the simplicity of the tutorial. When you're new to OCF, the last thing you want to hear is "use your light meter". This is a much simpler and more dramatic way of getting amazing shots
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I never used a light meter but one thing a photographer I admire said before was this, "never let a technical device make a creative decision". I like this quote because it's so true. A device like a light meter won't tell me how I feel the photo should be exposed. That depends on me.
@shadowyzman7078
@shadowyzman7078 3 жыл бұрын
@@fjhphoto exactly. Which is why I feel TTL modes are useless for taking creative portraits. Why should the camera decide what the image should look like? Wonderful quote BTW!
@AlexisABermudez
@AlexisABermudez 3 жыл бұрын
IMO you can still make creative decisions if your using a light meter, you just need to learn how to use it in your favor. Say you want to use a target aperture of f/1.4 to get that creamy background, you expose for the ambient using that target aperture, shutter speed and ISO just as Fernando did. You then input that same shutter speed and ISO settings into the light meter and expose for the model/flash by adding or removing power to the flash until you get to that target aperture of f/1.4. That takes out the guessing work initially, you can always add or remove power to the flash as Fernando did if you feel it. As an added benefit you will know what the ratio of flash to the total amount of ambient light is, this can provide consistency between shots for the session even if you change your exposure settings or the ambient light changes, and outdoors it always will!

@@AlexisABermudez So, you adjust your rim light power based on what reading you have on your ambient light, using a hand-held meter that reads flash in incident mode? Then you do the same for the main light? I usually do flash readings on my hand-held light meter for the total read-out when all the flashes fire at the same time.

First I would like to give you and others kudos for the help you give in the development of photographers but to be perfectly honest a lot of newer but also veteran photographers struggle with light placement and no one seems to address that. for example in the video above you are using a round soft box as a rim light when we have been told time and again to use a strip box to avoid light spill but you used a round softbox which is more difficult to properly place and also could you and others explain the amount of retouching per photo and I'm fully aware that you have retouching videos but to actually show the whole frustrating process of accomplishing your great shots would be invaluable.

I kinda wish you put your key light on the left side of the frame shooting in towards to the right side to follow the direction of the ambient light and shot it at a glow slightly stronger than the ambient light. Still though great tutorial. Expose for ambient, then add light. I'll remember that.

Hi FJH, thanks for the tutorial. It definitely reinforced my understanding on this aspect of flash photography. May i point out that I do feel like your background is abit too dark, which makes the photo unnatural. Unless thats what youre going for. There is still room for you to expose more for ambient I believe if you have adequate light source from your off camera flashes - you shouldnt afraid to bump up ISO so that you have your background at its natural brightness so the photo looks like it was shot in natural light overall. With adequate light, even with high ISO, you would not see noise. (i guarantee you). So just use your off camera flash to fill your subject. For a single subject yes, low shutter speeds at 1/60 at 1/80 is good enough but for events i.e. weddings - where sharp images are the bare minimum, your shutter speed should be at least 1/100 and 1/125. with that you have no choice but to work with a higher ISO to get those sharp images (assuming youre alr at your lowest aperture) For me, when i want to expose adequately for ambient. i use metering modes to determine whether i have enough ambient light. Since i am a sony a7iii user i use multi metering mode and try to get the value between -1 to 1 so the surrounding is not either too overexposed or underexposed. If anyone is reading this. let me know if you agree with me or if i am doing something wrong. Still learning!
