"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

Far too many fully lose touch with reality once they start to gain wealth. We have this misconstrued instinct left that "more is always better", but that isn't the case in the modern world, even back thousands of years ago you could only have so much before it went bad because the "more" was always just food to survive. Now "more" is materialistic nonsense, its expensive hand bags, shiny cars, jewelry, the newest phone to show off to friends, or throwing away money on digital "barbie dressup" in your favorite online video game for strangers. You see it constantly, almost everyone that starts out claiming they want to make changes for the average person, that we need to create a society where money isn't what hold people back from the things they actually need to survive and be healthy, once they get some money themselves they start to make excuses for all the expensive things they "need" in their lives, how much they start to waste the very same money on that they tell everyone else they shouldn't have lots of. "I needed the $3.5m Hollywood mansion with a pool overlooking the ocean" "spending $200k a year on delivery food is not a big deal" "A $2m apartment isn't actually expensive" etc. etc. etc.... Greed is one of our worst epidemics, it causes people to become apathetic and want even more.

@frostbite3820
@frostbite3820 Жыл бұрын
We need to try trickle up economics. In theory it should work beautifully because the bottom of the pyramid aren't wealth hoarders, they are the biggest spenders. They are the ones that cycle the money through the economy. Inflation occurs when those at the top stagnate their wealth and don't circulate it. The people at the bottom can't afford to live so more money gets printed but it only gets put in the rich's hands which they stagnate further driving up costs and the cycle continues Edit: idk why I explained it so much I know you guys already get this. Hopefully some uninformed voter sees this and it brings them to the light

I'm a dude trying really hard to get into med school, but I studied poli sci back in the day. I totally get why the American people don't trust doctors. The entire system is a business, and doctors often operate as businesses too. We talk about an erosion in public trust, but let's be real, that trust has not been earned.

Insurance companies are a grift and they’ve destroyed our medical system. I’m glad you care- don’t lose that! Women and POC are typically mistreated by doctors. They see people as a symptom or disease walking into the room as opposed to a human with a backstory that is important . And please give fat people the same ethically based care thin people get. Their size gets blamed for everything - the same diseases that thin folks get. 🌹 Best of luck!

As a medical student, I can attest that a lot of hatred towards physicians is unwarranted. Sure, there are some real ethical concerns in some fields, but Dr oz is one of the bad ones you see in any field. Those people exist, no matter how prestigious the profession. Most doctors hate how healthcare is run today, and they have much less control over it than you think.

@@XxJaguar22 I agree with you completely. To me it seems that no matter how many doctors act with integrity, though, the current system allows and incentivizes them not to. If only a tiny percentage of doctors are money/status-hungry grifters, but the current systems propels them to the top of the food chain, it's bad news for both access to healthcare and public trust.

I remember that study about $75k being the limit where the rate of happiness starts to level off and I even remember thinking that it kinda made sense (I made much less than $75k then and that was a pretty good salary for my area). However, that study was done a long time ago, like 2010 I believe, so that figure is likely way off today. Using a general inflation calculator, $75k in 2010 is equivalent to $100k today and there are plenty of areas where $100k really isn't that much, especially if it's the household income and not just for an individual.

SHARECARE??? Holy crap! I got the app from my insurance company. I'll admit that I don't remember seeing a bunch of ads, but I ditched the app just because it didn't link well with my fitness apps.

Dr Oz was such a baller already, top notch cardiac surgeon, making bank and respected… then made himself a laughing stock by becoming a tv personality and now getting into politics. Talk about destroying a legacy

He became a tv star because he had enough money already. It’s easy. I don’t think he would just have any product on his show, but I could be wrong.

I used to watch his show but I always thought he was covering new fads and explaining them. I didn't realize he mentioned that company so many times! But why wouldn't men like him be willing to scam and run for office after DT win?

Seems that the best people to have in congress and the senate are people who earn 80K or less, as they know what is needed for the average American to live.

Having recently gone from barely making enough to get by to now feeling secure, I can say it wasn't a gradual thing. When you're not making enough everything you spend money on is something else you can't get. Then I hit my living wage and suddenly all the things that stressed me out were covered and suddenly I had spending money. It was a shock. I still don't have enough to go on the vacations I want to go on, or upgrade my apartment or anything like that. But I'm now able to pay down my credit card without having to go without getting new clothes when I need them.

I will say Mr. Zelinsky, I believe most of the people who watch you’re show regularly, like myself, appreciate that you don’t take money from advertisers. You’re integrity is appreciated. As an individual, I’ve always appreciated the way you express the rage you feel at injustices you see in our systems. On one or two occasions I’ve disagreed with a personal view you hold, but god damn, you always stay bipartisan and hold the people in power accountable and that’s why I watch you’re KZbin channel. I know I’m getting the facts when I watch you’re show as well as BreakingPoints. And when there’s something the everyday person should be outraged by, you express you’re own outrage. Keep up the good work. You do make a difference even if it might not always feel like it, or you don’t see it. 👍❤️

Good medications don't need advertisement. I take Lamotrigine and recently Bupropion. I have never seen an advertisement for Lamotrigine and rarely see Bupropion advertised. Only the crappy expensive medications are advertised. Word of mouth is all you need for effective medication that is usually cost less money.
