I was a leader for most of my career. Airline captain and a few years in management. I have no desire to lead. When I ride with a group I’m content to follow. Most of the time I ride where and when I want by myself. I can travel at my own pace. I can stop and start when I want.

This has become my new favorite channel. Im a outsider/outcast/zero, but Im good with that. Ive always enjoyed setting my own pace. Ive ridden 31 years, from Honda to Harley, Sportbikes to Sportsters and I love them all.

I’m there with you dude. I’m a serious outsider too. 15K - 30K a year (depending on where I’m working). I don’t own a car and have no desire to join a club. Been riding Hondas (VTX 1300 and Sabre 1100) for many years. Just got a road king and traded in the VTX. It ain’t about what you ride. It’s about riding. There’s lots of people out the with “Live to Ride” all over their 3 year old bikes with 4K on the odometer. Edit: I bought a road king because I’ve never owned a Harley. I’ve had Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda and back in the day I had a Wankel Hercules and a Triumph Bonnie. Never bought a Yamaha (I don’t know why). I’m old so this will likely be my last bike. I wanted to get something the son could rebuild and ride forever.

My Dad told me a long time ago, I would not make it in the Army, I can't follow orders, I told him I'm not a leader or a follower, I just want to do my own thing, never needed to be in a club, don't like to be around a lot of people. I like to Ride with 2 or 3 people the at the most.

I consider myself an "outsider". I've ridden alone for 50 years as I've never had other friends that ride. The couple times I have been on group rides I was very uncomfortable thinking I would screw up whatever the group etiquette is.

When I was 60 years old, 14 years ago, I rode my Harley 1200 Sportster from Clarksville, Tennessee to visit my younger brother in Fort Collins, Colorado. Trip was 2400 miles round trip. Memories of a lifetime. Your video of Aussie's riding Harleys on a bakery run is on the spot. Thanks.

I was a leader in a para-military career for 30 years (law enforcement). I thrived in that environment. But it can be lonely. Hard decisions need to be made when time is of the essence. Being a leader can become your persona… your identity. That’s not good or bad. It just is. As a lifelong Harley rider, I’ve morphed into a outsider. Even the occasional meet up with other riders, tends to be old leaders that have sought refuge in being a outsider. 40 years ago, we called them “lone wolves”. I’ve accepted my fate. Roaming the earth from the edges… lookin in and out from a comfortable distance. But always ready to help or lead when called upon .

I am an outsider... last group ride I participated in was last century. Also I ride Shovelheads and do not go over 90 km/h out of mechanical compassion, and wont let peer pressure push me into going faster.

Just between you and me, I didn't get my first Harley until I was 45 years old. I m a life long rider and own BMW, Suzuki, etc. I have to say the Harley is a joy to ride.

Outsider, definitely, 100%! I’ve never been able to just “fit in”, go with the flow, follow the pack, and I have zero interest in leading anyone, anywhere. Figure out your own way and make it happen. Why are you asking me or looking to me for “your” direction? If you want or need advice, that’s fine. That’s different. If you need help, I’m glad to help if I can. If you’re looking for someone to “follow” keep looking because you’ll just end up pissing me off and we won’t be friends anymore, lol.

I started as a follower, grown into a leader, but after couple of years, when everything changed - family, friends, work, even country I am in now - I became an outsider. By a choice, I am too old and too stubborn to give a fk. I just enjoy it my way.

I play follower and leader pending on if I'm leading a ride that day. My group takes turns planning and whomever has the destination in mind gets to be road captain. Big benefit rides that we don't put on, we're usually outsiders that hang out in the back of the pack and decide by the second stop or lunch stop if we'll continue the ride or go our own way the rest of the day.

I'm definitely an outsider and prefer it that way as I've always been riding alone i only do group rides when I need to or just to support something that I am interested in that is very rare lol I much prefer long distance solo rides that way I'm not reliant on other riders to try and keep up with me 😂😂

I am back on 2 wheels for the first time in 20 years as of last year. I definitely would be a follower right now. A lot of others have way more experience than I do at this time and I know enough to know what I don't know lol. While I've played the role of all 3 Types, I tend to vacillate between being an Outsider and a Follower. Having acquired my used, gorgeous '07 FLSTN about 15 months and 8,000 km ago (5K miles), I mostly ride alone here in Arizona, seeking out many of the more challenging twisties to hone my skills. But when in a group, I acquiesce to my more experienced rider friends and am just happy to be part of a group ride as a Follower. And when my longtime, out-of-state friends visited for a week of riding, I chose all the destinations, the painstaking route planning, and led the 4-some ride as a Leader. To me, riding brings a zen-like feeling because you have to always be "in the moment", not letting your mind wonder with life's other distractions or worries.

Well said. I mostly ride on my own, when I rode in a group I was a follower, because there was people, at the time, that were more experienced and knowledgeable than I. I agree with having to be in the moment while riding. When I started riding, biking was all that, still feel it is, it forces you to be in the moment or bad things will happen. I started noticing I was spacing out while driving in the car and riding helped me to take notice this and become more aware while driving a car.

Being a follower, in a case where you have a strong group and a strong / good leader, is not a bad thing. I see follower as a supporter.You follow the leader in a group in support of a succesful ride, or succesful event or whatever the occasion is. I am a follower, and when asked to step up, I am a definite leader. Good content.

Great content topic. I consider myself a follower in the HD community. My position at work is a leader. I look forward to my time off and wish to not have to worry about decision making and organizing. I like to go with the flow and the freedom to follow along. Though I do appreciate a good leader if having to go on a group ride.

Was a leader from the time I picked up Corporal in the Corps until I retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. Have been a leader at work since 97. However, I ride alone or with one or two very trusted people. Have never trusted group rides.

I don't mind following or leading but I'm more than likely the outsider. I have trouble agreeing with the "group leaders" decisions on route and destination most of the time. Honestly I really don't like riding with more than just 2 or 3 people anyways, especially if it's a bunch of people I haven't rode much with. I like just going for it and ending up wherever these ride takes me...

New sub here, great videos mate! I think you missed a type & it is what I would say i am. We will call it a "Leadollower". I am a leader professionally so the last thing I want to do with my hobbies is be in charge. I do however want a well planned & organized event so what I do is come up with a plan, work out all the nits & pitch it to a mate so he gets excited at the idea. Before he knows it, its his plan & hes in charge.

I love been a follower. We had a great leader that we rode with from CA to Sturgis. I could sit back and just enjoy and ride. He had gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and senic ponts one of the best trips I have had.

I am a FOLLOWER and not afraid to say so I don't feel any negativity on it and here is why. I am a leader in my professional life and in my personal life. I am a manager and leader at work and I am the leader of my household. When it comes to riding and doing runs with groups I much rather not lead, I want to just show up, ride, have some fun, eat, chit chat, relax and make no executive decisions. It is a great way to reset my mind and spirit before heading back to life and having the stress of leading again.

Hi Amen, I'm 55 years old this year and been back on the bikes around 12 years. Around 6 or 7 years ago a started up my own group Brisbane Motorcycle Enthusiasts (BMCE). I would organise rides ever weekend and we would normally get around 10 to 15 riders. The biggest problem i had was that 20 guys would say they were coming and only 10 or 15 would turn up. I always booked a pub or restaurant for lunch and had to always ring ahead and tell the publican that the numbers are down and they would always crack the shits. I then said that i would like someone to take over the rides so could have a break and no one wanted. I eventually stoped organising rides , kept the FB page going and went on rides with close mates or by myself. I'm a small business owner, owning Queensland Bearings and always been in a managerial role throughout my career. I'm currently riding a 2022 BMW R1250GSA Adventure motorcycle but looking at changing to a Ultra maybe this year. I find your videos very motivating and inspirational, not just in the of motorcycle riding but with life skills.

I think your right as far as all motorcycle riders are outsiders to an extent, I'd say of those who do ride many Harley riders are followers and seek the community, an Outsider wouldn't do that, you will see them riding alone in something unique they like.

Because I'm willing to the homework required to map out a great ride, it usually means that I lead the pack. So in that sense I am a leader. But, when I'm able to just follow it is a nice break and I can just relax and enjoy the ride.

That was an interesting group of riders! I'd have said "independent, outsider", but I've been a follower, leader, two decades in the Marines, private to Gunnery Sergeant, had a motley collection of bikes through the years. I go out on my old Triumph more than the Harleys these days. I've got three harleys, but the Triumph is "the odd one out" more than the others. Haven't been on my chop for close to a decade, still sitting at the front of the shop though. I suspect that's a question seldom fully answered as it changes day by day. That's my take from the US. Enjoyed the question being answered, and enjoyed the scenery well.

I don't see the mindset of riding in packs, never have ridden in a pack and never will . There are too many ways something bad will eventually happen. After 58 years of riding this seems to work for me. On long trips I ride alone or with the wife on the back of what ever bike I'm riding.. I have ridden twice with a long time friend ( early 1970"s) and an accomplished rider but neither of us were a "leader". Currently I "follow" my wife as she's still working on her M license and a two year novice rider with little seat time. I follow her to keep an eye on her and hopefully intervene if and when I'm needed. I guess I'm an "outsider" and a "follower", both for safety reasons.

Pretty informative video, thank you. In my opinion, the best path one can take on their motorcycling journey is that we all start off as lonewolves in some way (outsiders), then we become followers, and then hope to one day learn from our leaders, and lead in some manner. However, I believe a healthy balance is to be able to be both a leader and a follower whenever you need to be one or the other, thus being able to seamlessly bond with the others during almost every group ride. Of course, not everyone is fit to play the leading role, and for these people, I believe the best path is a healthy balance of follower and lonewolf. Personally, I'm still at the very beginning of my journey, and thus I remain a complete outsider for the time being.

I was a leader when I ran my own construction company with employees. 64 and retired now, dance to the beat of a different drum. I guess I'd call myself an independent. Want to start the ride when I want to, and finish or stop the ride when I want to, lodge where I want to.. Refuel when I want to, piss when I want to, eat when I'm hungry. Group rides require so much coordination to pull off smoothly, and it can be no different than being in a flock of sheep. Wanting to do my own thing, at my own speed, and no one waiting up on me, and be accountable for only my own thing, I guess makes me an outsider.

I am a 70 yr old woman, I ride a fatboy and a softail Deluxe. I am a parent and have been a leader in corporate world. I now have my own business and ride every chance I get. Alone or with others. I only take the lead if the other riders don't want to. I just jump in and become the leader. But, prefer to be a follower. I am an outsider, probably because 98% of riders are men. I wrecked my bike in early 2021. This was a really bad accident. In late 2022, I got back on my steell horse. Good video!

I’ve been all 3 over the years. A successful leader can only be successful if egos aren’t involved. I’ve seen a few ruined this way. I’ve lead in charity events I’ve organised, I’ve also followed, less stressful. I think I’ll be more of an outsider/solo rider when I get my license back

First follower is the bravest. Everyone else takes their cue from them. Leader has the idea but first follower recognises it and says "yep" "good idea", others follow on from there.

What about the type of people who completely do their own thing. Ride alone, ride long haul, overseas, travel alone to do things they want to do. I only do long haul overseas from the UK to see my partner in Germany. That's 700 miles. I do that in 1 day on a sportster and 2023 I will ride to the artic circle in norway. The day riders are such a different breed

Correct....most people who are called leaders..from themselves or others are posers. Doing their deal for self gratification out of lack of self esteem or confidence...but not all. There are actually true leaders...but they won't be bragging about being one. Followers are a dime a dozen...99% of earth's population. Then there are the independent vagabonds...who do their riding by their own inspiration...true independent souls that dont look for or need validation by anyone. I prefer to live that life...always have and always will.

I will go to gatherings, but I ride alone to get there and ride home alone. I also usually stay at a different hotel than where the group stays because I need my decompress time. When I ride with others I prefer to be at the back since I know first aid and carry tools.

I guess I might be an Outsider. Lost some pals when I was young to thrills and spills - others lost limbs and quit. I either had a guardian angel on my shoulder or I'm just plain lucky. I went my own way for a long time - had my own career, agenda, places to see and things to do. I've met some real interesting guys on Harleys though, and I got to say some of the best of them were 'outsiders'. Some of the best games of pool and conversations I ever had were with guys from patch clubs. Me? I ain't never signed up to anything. Maybe I just don't belong? Guess I'm that oddball with the long hair, limp and an old top hat who prefers dogs to people. That'd be me. The 'outsider'?

I am an outsider. I ride no Matter what the weather is. It can be raining, snowing, or just plain ass cold, like 20% or below. I just enjoy the ride. I ride a Try Glade, A 3-wheeler with all season tires. It is my only mode of transportation. Am from Montana.

Definately outsider... been riding for 40 years.. used to go to bike rallies with mates 30 years ago.. was always the 'boy racer" .. 2019 went to the US and went across the country and met up with route 66 tours(great people) was always the racer and wanted to go off all the time ... things never change lol😂cheers Craig PS - look up "Harros Great Adventure" on here some xontent on the US and Sturgis etc

When it's something important, a good follower is key to the success of the leader. It can be very rewarding. I've been both leader and follower, even both at the same time at work. I do my best to set a good example in both roles and teach others to do and be their best in their roles. Depending on the situation, we can all be outsiders or have been at times. When I feel I'm an outsider, doing something new or around unfamiliar people, I mostly observe and maybe ask a question here and there to form an opinion to make decisions such as, is this for me, should I stay or go, if I stay where do I fit, and so on.

I am definately an outsider. I ride a Honda to try not to fit in. Harley riders try to make a statement by riding a Harley and customize it. If I ride in a pack of Harleys, my bikes stand out.

I feel l am an outsider, I do however set up rides but encourages others to take the leadership role so l can follow to shoot footage of the ride . I will lead if others don't know the road . Then drop back to tail-end Charlie to watch over beginner's. As you have seen l ride something different to most people. Not afraid to do my own thing and attend many different events alone . Happy to follow a great group of mate on a 2000km ride over 2 days

I would say I'm an outsider, I prefer to ride alone, but will join any charity ride I can. Biggest ride of the year is the gippsland toy ride followed by the black dog ride. Would be great to see you at the toy run one year.

These days when someone asks "what do you identify as"...it's going to be a ridiculous conversation - LOL! That being said - typically I am a bonafide outsider, especially in a group of riders that I don't know but typically prefer to ride alone. Since I don't own a bike on account of the very short riding season where I live, my riding is typically a rental and solo riding at a good weather location of my choosing.
