Talking about guys drawing coloring books, one time I was in a Dollar General and saw a Bible coloring book and the cover was painted by Earl Norem. Samson was straight-up Conan-ish. Of course I bought it!

Yeah, when I went to school, there were a couple dudes in my classes that were ex-military studying criminal justice or whatever, and they were always rock-solid students. Low profile, just doing their work guys.

I don't regret art school but if I was a teen today, I wouldn't go. At most, take some software and business courses at a community college. There are several tutorials online though, if you're stuck but you either have the hustle or you don't.

My daughter is a very talented artist, and goes to an art-based high school. But now that we’re staring down the barrel of college next year, I am very cautious, to put it mildly

Gonna chime in with my experience, about this little strip. Been to multiple schools, 8 years total in different countries for bachelors and masters of fine arts and this fucking strip rips through language and cultural barriers like nothing I’ve seen. The amount of hypocrisy you find in such places is staggering. During graduate school one of the most famous and inspiring teachers was Vincent Desiderio, and he fucking loves this strip, he would call different students ‘joepro’ and the like to mess with us. He’s given lectures and demos you can find on KZbin where he quotes the comic too. He’s one of the most respected living painters worldwide and the guy is a clowes fan. Respect.🙏❤️🔥

ABSOLUTELY TRUE! The most vocal critics among the students were the ones with the least amount of talent! I think it’s a coping mechanism. Deep down inside they can see they are the least talented and they try and knock others down a peg or two to make themselves feel better. Usually fine arts types that cannot render and have no grasp of the nuts and bolts of illustration. You will find many of them making the Jamocha shakes at Arby’s.

I learned a lot in art school but I went almost twenty years ago and it didn’t cost half as much as it does today. Now, I would try to apprentice with a professional instead.
