The video shows the process of removing the epoxy resin using a scalpel and a heat gun (fired up to 200°C). Removing it with a scalpel was rather destructing, but I did not want to use aggressive chemicals. The whole process took about 10 Minutes. The last minute of the video also shows some close-ups done with a cheap webcam, which was modified for magnification. More information can be found at www.kaibader.de...

Thank You! I was always wondering but never searched for answer. Greetings from Poland :)

So it’s a pre programmed OBC and the black blob is put on to protect the chip from light and from the elements of the doping process.

Should be able to use some type of solvant to dissolve the epoxy without breaking the wires

Sulfuric acid, or glycolysis can work. It pretty much ruins fiberglass too so it's not perfect. Also laser engravers can sort of reverse 3d print them, but you kinda need to know exactly where the die is. I'm making a micro x-ray machine just for that reason.

@@phantom2012 I would think that the solder mask would protect the fiberglass long enough for it to dissolve the epoxy. Once you're looking to expose the chip you pretty much sacrifice the board too so I don't think it's that much of an issue. Maybe preheating the epoxy will allow a weaker solvant to take care of the epoxy without damaging anything else

Is the chip itself destroyed by this process or is it possible to reconnect the wires with proper equippment?

At least the bonding wires are destroyed, and reattaching them is beyond my capabilities.

yes, you would of course need a machine to do this and very fine wire. refer to this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6e9YpeAqtuYpNk however you would also need to wire them correctly, which is another problem in itself, but if you had many of these chips you could just keep trying until it worked lmao.

Is it safe to leave it without the blob? Will it still work or will it break. I have some bootleg famicom cartridges, so I want to fix them

Depends... If you damage the bond wires by decapping, say rip to your cartridge, they cant be soldered on they are welded on so if that happens you cant fix it. Also semiconductors that are made of silicon are sensitive to bright light, because it generates voltage in them and that can mess up bits inside the die. Thats why solar panels use silicon and chips are packaged

Even if that was gold (it's most likely copper), there would be so little of it that you could maybe get a few cents worth.
