The real question that should have been asked is why it was only banned for girls and not all children? The correct answer to that is that the socalled anti FGM campaign is a Western (White) cultural imperialist effort to make Africans (Black) in particular, adopt Western cultural cutting practice (male exclusive) and drop African (gender inclusive) ones. Many African countries like Gambia, rely on Western aid and can be easily pressured to introduce bans on cutting girls however generally this is only on paper and authorities simply turn a blind eye to cutting girls in those communities. The real change is when it comes to medicalisation as mentioned but this goes for girls too. So in practice Western support for cutting also extends to cutting girls, the very target for Western campaigns.

it's a barbaric practice (and business!). i'd have no problem the west imposing values that reject this dumb practice.
