Growing up in northern New Jersey, I was eight when Pac died and only just getting into rap music because of Biggie’s hits (who we admired the most in Jersey). I’ll be honest, at that age, I was petrified of Tupac. I saw him as a loudmouthed villain - I saw Big as the ‘nice, cool guy’. That was just eight year old me. When Pac and Big beefed, there was a black cloud looming over that’s hard to explain, but I could sense the danger metaphysically. Too much negative energy from the east/west rivalry and the last vestiges of ‘gangster rap’ spilling over to the streets.
