Have you come across these begging scams? Not all beggars are genuine; I expose 3 fake beggars in this video so you know what to avoid when you travel to India. The most common begging scams I've come across are the Ranipur calamity fake charity scam, fake medical bills scam, and fake donation collectors.
These scams can happen anywhere in India. Begging scammers commonly target tourist areas, busy intersections, expensive parts of cities, and railway stations. If you meet any of them, just say "no" and keep walking. Don't fall for their lies. These are professional beggars who are trying to trick you into donating money to a fake cause.
If you want to give to beggars, you need to verify their story. If approached by a beggar who claims to be in a dire situation, exercise caution. Ask questions and evaluate their responses. Genuine individuals in need might provide coherent and consistent explanations.
Trust your instincts too. If something feels suspicious or doesn't seem right, trust your gut instinct. It's better to err on the side of caution and refrain from engaging with potential scammers.
Spread awareness: Share information about begging scams with friends, family, and your community. Increasing awareness about these scams can help protect others from falling prey to fraudulent schemes.

Hey Karl, I am a Fiji Indian living in NZ for 20 years. Some of the scams you are highlighting here are now starting to be reported in NZ now. Because I look Indian, I have been approached for money especially at Indian shops and Temple. On asking questions these scammers start becoming defensive and sometimes abusive which because of my Fijian blood makes me so angry, that I start yelling at them. They eventually leave but my experience with these Indians keeps me from visiting India as I feel my temper will get the better of me there after seeing your videos. I fell for the hotel tariff scam while working in Bengaluru. A man came up to me with a story of having to be in the City but he cannot afford the hotel bill (if I recall). I paid something, but less than he wanted. A month later (when I was more of a veteran to life in India), the same guy came to me with the same exact story when I was downtown around MG and Brigade. I lost it on him, and made a scene, as I was frustrated and to let others around know not to fall for the scam.

If I say a number which they are expecting, they show you that they have correctly predicted the number as they wrote it on the paper. They might ask you one more question, like, name a milk giving animal or a garden flower. This is a simple psychological trick where most people, Indian at least, will choose cow or rose for those questions. Then they show you that they predicted correctly, and on that paper itself, will be an amount written. Like 1100 or 3100 and they will ask you to pay them that much amount. If you give an answer which is different from what they've written, they will just shamelessly ask you to guess again and again and again 😂

I went to Nepal last month and I can say that it's the same case here, lots of beggars and even in busy traffic you can see children roaming around people's cars and begging for money and they keep on persisting. I was visiting a temple and I was surprised to see a bunch of beggars there too, no parents or anything, most of them were just children or literal babies yet they go around begging people walking by for money, they'll even go as far as to follow you for ages until they get something.

I know there are so many scammers, but I always think of those who legitimately have to beg in order to survive. There are indeed children begging, I'm sure you know.😢😢 And now, HOW can I see it. I mean, genuine beggars also sometimes tend to pressure, depending on how their day went. Anyways, prayers for all of you out there. ❤️🙏

Saying "no" is easier said than done. As a woman we fear saying no because of physical and social repercussions. I love to travel and right now I'm in Northern Europe, and while there may not be many beggars here, there are men who stop you just to talk to you / waste your time. In life there are people who can take more than money from you when they see you're a foreigner. So ladies (and gentlemen) if a stranger stops you anywhere, even if it's just to flirt, say no thank you (unless you're also interested) but don't carry on conversations with emotional vampires who are bored, want attention, or feel lonely. It's not youre job to entertain strangers especially when your in a foreign country and have plans and just want to relax.

In any large city in India, there are various types of scams running. In Bengaluru, for example, people from north India are running several sympathy scams on localities. Let's say you're walking down the street in some affluent neighborhood, a family - a husband, a wife plus at least 3 to 4 kids, will approach you with a pickup line - "hindi maaloom (can you speak Hindi?)", and tell you a sob story of how they lost everything on a train while they were traveling somewhere (they typically use some religious destination), and ask you for "help" to get back to their hometown in north. I fell for it for the first time many years ago, and I saw the exact same family years later in a different neighborhood running the exact same scam.

Yeah, always had the best experience with sikh temples in india! The bigger temples usually have a room where you can leave your shoes, often there is someone there who will show you around, you can sit and listen to music, you can eat at the langar if you ask, very nice and relaxing, and they don't even ask for money! Without fail, everytime I visited a Sikh temple, they didn't ask me to pay and I had to ask them where the donation Box is! And they didn't seem to expect me to donate. Like, I don't mind giving a few hundred rupees, especially if i sat in the temple for half an hour and got to eat something in the langar, but it's nice that donations can be given freely and they don't pressure you. Granted, if you visit small hindu temples, they are often also genuinely welcoming, but especially some larger ones seemed quite capitalistic and lots of different altars where priests except donations.
