I just put in a deep heat projector for my little Leo. I stated previously that she is a notoriously terrible hunter. Well, I would like to say since she has been using the deep heat projector and UVB combo her whole personality has changed! She is energetic, she’s eating well and she wants to come out of her enclosure more and socialize with her humans! I cannot thank you enough for bringing this piece of tech into Emoji’s life. I am forever grateful 💕

I really adore how you improved your set ups over time and how you don't shy away from educating yourself and challenging your keeping habits. You have nice, natural looking set ups and your geckos are clearly thriving. I wholeheartedly believe that every animal will do best in a set up that resembles their natural environment the most. Leos are such hardy animals and can endure incredible hardships. But just because they are surviving in a minimalistic set up doesn't mean they're thriving. I like how the reptile hobby is slightly shifting from "oh they're reptiles, they don't care about anything" to actually understanding the behavior and biology of these animals and trying to give them the best set ups possible.
@leopardgeckotalk5 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) yeah in the almost 7 years i've been running this channel now (omg 👵🏻 lol) i've seen so much change in the reptile hobby, it's just important to keep moving with the new evidence and improving the animals care, setups, and overall wellbeing :)

i just put this in my setup and i cannot thank you enough! within the first 10 minutes she started exploring and loving the new heat and light setup so much more, not to mention temp control is so much better than an all in one mercury bulb and heatpad. this is a game changer
@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
That’s great! However, I strongly recommend switching to a halogen flood bulb, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of IRA and IRB they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength). I’d check out the recent podcast from the Animals at Home channel, a reptile heating and lighting expert talks about the importance of full spectrum lighting :)
@ArcadiaReptile5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the update. Using time lapse is so helpful as it enables us all to see the patterns of use in near real time. From what i have seen, all of your animals are showing typical basking behaviour whilst also positioning the body for a quick escape, which is part of natural predator awareness. You can also see the reduced colour variants making good use of the energy whilst covering the head at times. Again, perfect use of energy from light in what is a very advanced and very clever species. The more we learn, the more we see the evidence of wild-like behaviour, the more we see that this species really is not nocturnal as we were once told, I am not even sure if we can class them as deeply crepuscular, especially with the evidence of use now available that shows full open basking for quite long periods. Knowledge is power as they say! The more we learn, the better the provision we can make for all of our pets.

Just got everything for a deep heat projector with dimming thermostat set up for my new leopard gecko today, she's probably close to 3 months old right now, just got her two weeks ago. She LOVES the deep heat.. i went to check on her and i was like omg how did she get out where is she???? well she was sleeping on top of the largest hide in the tank to get close to the lamp during it's night drop in temperature... she was splooted out hard. she has never slept out in the open like this with me, such a behavior change!!! I am so excited, thank you for helping me be a better gecko mom

The female leopard gecko I have (she's about 6 months old), she will also rub her face and body against the rocks and hides in her tank, even if she isn't due to shed. I need some advice on my two supposedly female leopard geckos. We bought them together last year and they were originally living together already but when it came time for them to lay eggs it seemed like only one gecko Coco was laying. We didn’t really think too much about it because we hadn’t actually seen what gecko had actually laid the eggs. The eggs turned out to be fertile and we weren’t sure if the man we got them from was breeding them before but still sold them to us. Anyway we gave the fertile eggs to another breeder and he said he could incubate them,but apparently all of our 5 or 6 eggs didn’t hatch! Which I still don’t believe, but now I’m convinced that my “female” gecko Indy is actually male as she has quite distinct pores and a small bulge, she also has a larger tail and head which is apparently also a male feature to have. So now I’m a bit confused on what to do and if Coco will lay eggs and if I should separate them. Also I have seen them try to breed on multiple occasions, even yesterday in their tank and Indy( the gecko I think is male) always climbs on top of Coco😬 Sorry for the rant, but would appreciate it if you or anyone could give me advice please x
@leopardgeckotalk5 жыл бұрын
Hey there, sadly geckos shouldnt be housed together, even two girls. Also I believe if the eggs are tipped round the wrong way the developing embryo will drown (or so ive read), so there's maybe a chance that the time between her laying them and you taking them to the breeder the embryos may have been damaged.
@Angie-qp5ti4 жыл бұрын
How tall is your tank? How many inches from the ground to the bulb? What is your tank ground temp? I got a DHP for my gecko, and on top of his climbing rock it's 93 degrees, then about half way down it's 80 and on the ground it's 73. Does the ground on the hot side need to be 90? Is he too cold? I figured he would go up on his rock if he's too cold and get warm again.

Hi, I can't seem to find if there is any information regarding a certain distance the DHP should have from the gecko? I know you mentioned it should be far enough away, so the gecko can't reach it, but is there any other things I should take into consideration regarding distance when installing it?
@ArcadiaReptile5 жыл бұрын
HI, in order to create a wide enough projection to cover the whole animal the 50w lamp should be 12-15" ideally above the body when seated at the top of the basking zone. You can then set your dimming stat to deliver the temp that you need on the slate at this distance. Hope this answers your question

I've recently gotten some UVBs for both of my geckos, and one of them spends a lot of time in it and clearly enjoys it, however the other one (who is a bit skittish), almost never leaves its hide while the lights are on. I'm concerned she may not be getting enough D3 from them, any advice or reccomendations? I could always switch back to supplementing the D3 if neccesary, but I feel like its anxiety is a bigger underlying issue leading to this. (Yes, they are housed separately from eachother.)

My female hasn’t really eaten in months. They can go awhile without supplements without getting MBD. You could give her a calcium dish (with d3 since it’s required to absorb calcium), but to avoid an overdose monitor her and don’t leave it in there for too long.

@nightinggale64703 жыл бұрын
Heat mats are not an adequate heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Get a tube UVB bulb as well. I’d check out the recent podcast from the Animals at Home channel, a reptile heating and lighting expert talks about the importance of full spectrum lighting :) And all lights should be off at night. Your room lights are ok if they aren’t on for too long.

I have a small house gecko and I don’t know how to get it to trust me. I don’t know if I should put soil and stuff at the bottom because I don’t know if a small Florida house gecko requires the same things as a leopard one
@fionashepley4785 жыл бұрын
Their care is completely different than a leopard gecko’s. You do need soil at the bottom, though. Do loads of research so you can make a proper setup. Did you get them from the wild? Keeping wild animals usually isn’t good at all although house geckos happen to be invasive. Just please care for them properly.

Hi! I’m looking at getting a new aquarium for my leopard gecko and im thinking of getting him a 20 but I also want to see what I’m doing wrong. The setup right now is forest bark for the substrate, I have a heat mat under the aquarium and then bark over it, one bottom less hide over the bark with the heat Matt under it, a food tray, and a water that is big. Please help me find out if what I’m doing is wrong. Thank you!

A 20 gallon long (30x12x12 inches) is the minimum for an adult, and bigger is better. Change the substrate. Reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate is good over six months for digging enrichment. It can be half textured tile or excavator clay. Make sure he has three hides minimum and climbing enrichment

i would like ro ask you my setup for my two female leopards. asking for your opinion. i decided on ceramic tile, a uvb light, in take under tile heater, using three total thermostats(one themal century heat mat digital control), and a few little extras. they are every 4 days, a varied diet. can't deal with the dubai roaches. this is a thirty gal setup. thank you in advance for any advice.

It sounds pretty good, but they need to be separated ASAP. Leopard geckos are solitary animals and don’t benefit at all from cohabitation. It’s very stressful, gender doesn’t matter. I’ve seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. Not worth the risks at all. Please read this, an article written by someone who had two females together for a few years before they fought: aminoapps.com/c/reptiles/page/item/cohabiting-leopard-geckos/D8Qg_QpxUNIM8BDlKwQwYGZQzgrJ3Q1WWV8 About the enclosure: it would be beneficial to give them some digging enrichment with reptisoil, organic top soil, or a bioactive substrate. You could do half and half or full loose. It’d also be beneficial to use some overhead heating with a ceramic heat emitter or deep heat projector. The loose substrate is more important though.

So my gecko will sometimes go behind his warm hide and squeeze himself between the rock hide and the glass wall, any tips?
@leopardgeckotalk5 жыл бұрын
Could it be that that's the darkest place? I think sometimes they'll seek out the darkest places to hide.

Im thinking about getting dubia roaches for my juvenile leopard gecko. Should I get 1/2" dubias or 5/8" dubias. Please help. Thank you!

if you measure the gap between your geckos eyes, this should give in an indication of the size of the food you'll need.

If you use supplement d3 will they avoid the uvb light because they already get enouph from d3 powder? Just bought some no d3 stuff for mine. She hates the light..

I don’t think so. How’s she doing with the light now? Reptiles often need to be given plenty of time to adjust to big changes.

My leopard gecko did the same when I used UVB with her. Is yours albino? Is the bulb linear or compact, and what percentage is it? Make sure d3 is in one of their supplements since they’re not using the UVB.

Hey! I am avid viewer here from the Phillipines! Know what... I tried the uvb light on my LG and got the same reaction from 'em. They' re now often oustside their hide somewhat basking and/or dosing off 😂. Weird... Hey can you make a video that will debunk other myths about LGs - - e.g. Nocturnal vs crepuscular?

Make sure the DHP is connected to a thermostat, measure the temp with a digital thermometer, and use a hide made out of slate or another heat conducting material.

I'd say 20gal is minimum really. If you can go 20-30gal as an adult, 2-3ft, that would be awesome :)
