Technologist billionaire Eric Schmidt, the CEO who took Google public, says we are not ready for the Artificial Intelligence "revolution" but offers ideas on how to think through the power and tradeoffs of social media and the coming metaverse. Schmidt, a former adviser to Pres. Obama and the Defense Department, explains how industry and government leaders can better address the profound disruptions in how we live, including how social media profit incentives drive psychological and political division. He also reflects on contemporaries like Steve Jobs, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, the challenge of keeping an open mind, why he attends Burning Man, and his philosophy towards success and failure. This is the newest installment of The Summit Series with Ari Melber, featuring in-depth discussions with leaders at the summit of their fields. The series debuted in 2021 with Melber’s interview with Bill Gates.

“It is important to find something about to explode and ride the wave with it.” Most people don’t get to do that. I also noted not really answering the question about taxation, saying when he dies it’ll be given away… there are million dollar condos owned by billionaires in what used to be thriving cities. So there’s the empty condos, and middle and lower income people being reduced to extreme stress and - in some cases - loss of homes and livelihoods. What is he doing about ensuring the improvements of everyone’s livelihoods? Does he support build back better? Does he support making certain that communities have the assets necessary to thrive?

"If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed. Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality." ― Stephen Hawking, 2015 Reddit AMA

@Daniel Duvalle - exactly. I’d like to know how Eric views his role. IF he pays attention to brain science, and the effects of malnutrition, poverty, and unhealthy stress on the developing brains of children, seems to me he would actively advocate (politically and financially)for more support for families and the poor; for housing as a right, and healthy nutrition. Evidence is there for making housing a right. Foreign entities owning massively expensive condos that sit empty because for them it is an asset while we have increasing levels of homelessness seems a real sin against humanity.

@@lauraw.7008 ~ Thank you! I tend to express myself better in writing, where you have the luxury of more time to formulate your thoughts and words. That's probably true for most people, I think. Take no credit for my intellect or natural inquisitiveness, which I was fortunate to be born with. The eloquence can be attributed to a life-long love of reading and decades of practice writing. I also benefited from well-educated parents and good teachers in our public school system. For me, posting incisive, well-written comments is just one small way to pay it forward and make a contribution to society. First of all, Ari is one of the best, if not THE best at MSNBC and I find his interviewing style and substance better than just about any other media outlet on television. That said, I've gained even more respect for Mr. Schmidt than I've had, which was already sky high. The thoughtfulness and insight on his answers is simply unparalleled. It's refreshing and encouraging to know that there are still people of this caliber in our society, when we are constantly inundated by the politicians who are seemingly in a constant race to the bottom of the intellectual ladder.

His statement that shareholder return and profits is no longer the main driving force, well seems a bit naive and out-of-touch. Years of ignoring employees and concentrating the corporate benefits at the top have led us into the mess we're in now. As example, he praises Beso's "bookstore" which put so many mom-and-pops out of business, destroyed the neighborhood boodstores, and has been allowed to become an 800 lb gorilla that has wrecked havoc on our economy. We're plagued by a technology class that only sees corporate benefits and profits and what widespread havoc their work has on the lives of everyday people and the larger society.

It should be simple, especially if we can put aside individual ego, open hearts and minds to accept and love each individual. Competition served capitalism, but we need to evaluate how much is appropriate in this era. Truth is the new key to rapid growth. Trust is needed for the foundation. The current events have destroyed both for the moment.

Mass amounts of people being fired from their jobs, total control of the state/corporatism, erasure of civil rights, the population being exploited by the ruling class, insane amounts of surveillance, data collection, and personalized weaponized information targeted directly at you. I really like this interview. So Ari is of course extremely talented at interviewing, but I felt he let Eric off a little too easy on the tax question. I think Ari could have pushed a little bit more there. As a liberal myself, though social liberal, I agree we need to protect the individuals liberties. But with the growing disproportion between the global corporations and the consumer we definitely need more regulations to protect the consumer and also not let the corporations dictate the policies of society. I do not agree with Erics thesis that corporations today are driven by more than profits and therefore should not be more regulations. Of course the wrong type of regulations could stifle the economy and growth of our society. But for example imagine a world with production automation driven to it's extremes. No chauffeurs or drivers for example within the taxi industry, public transportation or cargo transportation. A whole work fleet out of jobs. If we wouldn't adapt our regulations or tax laws accordingly we would end up in total kaos and anarchy. Think unemployment over 20, 30, 40%, how would that affect society. Therefore we would need to tax automation and redistribute the wealth, maybe through a system where citizens would be seen as shareholders of the country and would earn dividend. Giving each citizen a basic living standard. No one would have to work to survive but could instead focus on their passions. Decentralized small businesses would thrive as people could live outside of the city centers since they don't have to live there for the work. If you read this far sorry for the rant 😊

The problem with AI is not really a problem with the AI, it’s with us. Humans. We are going to use AI for dangerous, repetitive or boring tasks that we don’t want to do. You heard it in one of those clips at the start “someone can push a button and all of the production you want done in a day will just happen”. This is all fine until the AI gets close to self awareness, or indeed achieves self awareness. At that point, the AI will be an artificially created slave race created by us and (broadly) one that thinks along similar lines to what we do. Every slave race in history has rebelled against its masters. There is zero reason to think this will be different with AI. Plus the control of the AI will be in the hands of the same people who have dithered about for the last 50 years on the subject of climate change. They will do the same with the emergence of AI self awareness: by the time they should have acted they will barely acknowledge that there is a problem emerging. It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when. It is our nature as human beings that will make this problem inevitable.

All those who spoke in favor of all will stand to benefit financially from it but unfortunately we're just everyday humans who have seen lost of movies about this subject and it never ends well and to make matters worse some things we've seen in moves have finally happened now that said we can all remember or at least imagine what it was like before a basic hoover to help you clean the house was made, microwave, electric ions now were into steamers etc all these .are our lives much much easier and humans fought all of them tooth and nail we never want change its unknown so it's good to have dreamers to continue dreaming for the betterment of man kind if we fight that part of progression, China will not nor other nations looking to manufacture something revolutionary....so since we can not stop them you stop one group 7 more are doing it I think let's just embrace the possibility and hope since no fighting these great minds to build things in the bunkers but to be open about it maybe just maybe safety for mankind will always be priority and as they buildthese things to alwaysallow humans superiority how i dont know its them to figurethat out..just my 2 cents on the matter 😆 As for social. Media his absolutely right but who can fix it they all know the issue and those who can fix it are the ones benefiting the most and have no incentive to stop the mess.

It risks making humans less intelligent in the way that mechanisation of production means less muscle and literacy has led to reduced amounts of memorised data. Pre- literate people for example knew hundreds of songs "one is 2 days long" - Maori elder". Now people reas the lyric off a phone screen.

Sounds like he's selling pre-deregulation. How would President Obama interview on the subject today? Does anyone remember the series Almost Human?

This rich guy says the military supply chain is inefficient because it's risk averse, NOT because the defense contractors exploit the bureaucracy and overcharge American tax payers by billions. It's the government accountability and transparency that's the problem, not the poor defense contractors price gouging and extorting the taxpayers. I guess he forgot about that. What a surprise... another billionaire who thinks governments should be run like a private company. And why is MSNBC even giving this guy a platform? Because he's a billionaire. So clear that their primary concern is to maintain existing power structures in America. Every time MSNBC brings on a rich billionaire they should be forced to bring on a regular everyday person. FFS.

I only caught this guy in one lie. Now I'm tech savvy so he could have told many more, but he definitely lied when he said that companies now have more goals than profit. Nope. The courts have told companies they are barred by law from expanding their missions beyond the financial end.

hey ari:) it becomes dangerous when man tries to merge man with machine=transhumanism, clay and iron cannot mix, all wisdom belongs to god, he created us, and nothing and no one can replace human life. blockchain technology will not prosper, because every soul belongs to god, god will judge those who are trying to destroy his creation. lots of love my dear friend:)
