I don't think it was even that. The US and EU knew this war could not be won. It was not meant to be won. Winning the war in Ukraine is nowhere near as lucrative to them as fighting it. What this war was meant to do is cripple Europe. Remember Victoria "Fuck the EU" Nuland? Even at the time, the EU resisted (hence Nuland's "Fuck the EU") comment... but eventually they caved to their US masters and joined in on their own self-destruction. When the US bombed the Nord Stream pipeline, it wasn't to destroy Russia, or even to hurt it - it was to destroy Germany as an economic rival. Germany's economy collapsed. What happened to Russia's?
