As a solo black woman traveler, I have never felt 100% safe anywhere. I always try to find black spaces that I pre-research before I go. I’ll say in Europe, European black people critiqued me for saying that I only want to be in community with other black people. It’s like they insinuated that I would be considered more “cultured” if I was mixxy with white and “poc” Europeans. I have lived abroad in Latin America and Europe and I felt safer in Brazil or certain parts of Colombia than anywhere in Europe though I adore Paris. In Paris, Arabs were the most racist towards me, primarily men, called me a whore and one time I actually had to get physical with an Arab couple bc they were following me late at night.

I'm commenting at 5:58, so please excuse me if you cover this later. As a 62 y.o. Black woman, I remember white people touching me without my permission and also asking completely inappropriate personal questions. If I showed resistance as a child, I was scolded by the white person and labeled some form of uppity. If they told my parents, I was scolded for causing a white person to have to approach them regarding my behavior. I learned my place. As an adult, I find that they react to my resistance with hostility, which makes me feel unsafe. They react with tears, because, ooh the scary Black woman, and then their man runs in to save the victim, and I feel unsafe. This is the US. I don't want to have to figure out a whole different culture of white people. It scares me and I'm tired. P.S. - Your makeup is it!

Hello Mayowa, I am from turkey, istanbul. Let me tell you what they do with those photos. They show it to their friends or family as if they met an exotic/endangered animal! This is the reality. I remember when I was in Highschool, my female young chemistry teacher pulled up her photos with a chubby black baby (literally 1 y/o) and told us "look i saw this black (z*nji - black in arabic and turkish but we dont use it as a slur, slurs dont exist in turkish ) baby and look how "it" looks. Idk felt like she saw a baby animal and took a pic with. Also that lady is NOT being admired. She is being laughed at whilst being treated like a foreign object. To me she is a baddie and looks etheral. But i am familiar with american culture and meme culture fashion culture and internet culture but those people are NOT. Another thing i'd like to mention is that i saw a black travel creator coming to turkey and being chased by men. Men using google translate, sending her table flowers , following her etc and this creator was thinking /posting "omg traditional masculine men" where in reality local turkish men did all that for "omg foreign women = easy sex" mentality.

I'm a black American with tailbone length locs. People took pictures of me everywhere I went. On trains - which were packed beyond anything I've ever experienced - strangers would go as far as handing me their child and taking pictures of us. In the hotel that I stayed at, the workers routinely asked me to cut one of my locs and give it to them. One of the translators that I was blessed to have paired with me told me that for many, I was the first black person that they had seen in person. Perhaps, now, it's less of a big deal to see people of color, but it was very overwhelming at the time.

That photo of the little girl in the zoo in Brussels is such a surreal photo to look at knowing a human zoo was around in 1958. Though, for reference the last human zoo in France was called Bamboula's Village when a french cookie brand partnered in an exhibition of African people, who were tricked into coming to an event as performers, had their passports revoked, were made to walk around exposed and when some got sick they were seen by veterinarians instead of doctors. This was in 1994.

The people really stare at anyone like they're aliens. Even white people get stared at. Something I noticed though. I've seen a lot of white people travel to Sub-Saharan African countries and the Black children there also like touching there hair, and really marvel at it. So I think some people just have a genuine interest in people who look different. But then there are some people that have the "human zoo" approach like you said.

Thanks for this topic, people need to open their eyes and be discerning, social networks are not real life! I've always wondered about these black (dark) female influencers, who make videos about being a star abroad! No one sees anyone as a celebrity unless you really are! it's really ridiculous, the way a white person in an African country (with very few if any white people) people will be curious about a physique they've never seen; that's all! Also, I totally agree with you, what are people doing with these photos? In the age of deep fakes, ia, and porn, I'd never allow that! A Chinese acquaintance told me never to allow myself to be photographed, if I ever go to China, why? because once they've shown the photo to their close circle, often these photos end up on Douyin and feed, mockery, amusement, racism, xenophobia etc... I think that we blacks, and in particular dark-skinned black women, have internalized so much rejection, colorism, black mysogeny, hypersexualization by the media and certain black male celebrities, that some women are ready to accept anything and everything if it can feed a little acceptance and “love” from others; How sad. Have you ever noticed how underneath the videos talking about racism towards us coming from another community, there's always someone writing “they don't like us, they've never liked us etc...” a comment that's always struck me too, always begging for acceptance or love from others. But who cares if they love us or not! Do they pay your rent? No! Do these people feed you? NO! So please, ladies, respect yourselves, take pride in yourselves! Be careful when you travel, no country is 100% safe for anyone, let alone black women! Keep this in mind and enjoy your life without going by looking for acceptance in other people's eyes constantly, you'll lose yourself.

PS, I posted this before finishing the video. Ota Benga is a story I keep close to my heart. They treated him so terribly and I will never forgive that. I feel it’s also different when you’re identifiably a Western Black person vs African or Black from that place of origin. As an African who code switches, how I’m treated in certain places depends on how American/British I sound. When I’m with my western friends vs my African family (or local Black people from the region) in Europe/ Asia/ Arab peninsula- the treatment is vastly different. Being an identifiably/sonically Black African is tough. An African and an African American will have different experiences. There’s the imperial culture vehicle that advertises African Americans ( or rather their culture) as cool so the reception is warmer/ curious. Local Black people and Africans get the dirtiest looks bro omg. But yeah in general America and the fashion industry is the only place I’ve seen it reversed for Africans, and even here- the privilege is reserved for the academically elite. In fashions case, there’s the East African look they fetishise. If you’re a regular minimum wage/struggling African here, even African Americans will dunk on you for your African origin. I’ve be told I looked like I have AIDS by my cousins here lol. It’s wild out here. We need to be intersectional when dealing with Blackness too. PS: infrastructurally, I’ve been poor in both Africa and America and trust me you would rather be poor in the first world than third, so I get why Africans say why are AAs complaining because it’s unequivocally better here- there’s no two ways about that. But that doesn’t mean that Black people have it great relative to the economic performance of their peers/citizens.

I'm so glad you made this video. Being black unfortunately means you will not be safe in every country, and as you rightly mentioned that level of safety differs depending on what you look like physically. I've travelled to India as a plus size black woman and quite literally felt like an animal in a zoo. I recall sitting on a wall waiting for my friends to return and being surrounded by Indian people just staring at me, pointing and talking about me in their native language. I've also been to Morocco and was sexually harassed in the market by shop owners and natives and even sexually assaulted by a waiter whilst taking a photo with him in a restaurant. The luxury of being able to just emigrate to any country that takes our fancy is just not possible and I often feel a sense of jealousy when I see relocation TV shows of white people just starting a new life in another country I know may not be the most racially accepting of me let alone being a plus size woman.

I’m so glad you’re ok and walked away from that accident!! I agree on the “what is safe or normal to you may not be safe or normal to me”. We are not a monolith nor should we be treated like one. Also YES!! How a place treats migrants is all you need to know. A lot of those places act like they’re vastly different in their ideals than America but they’re very unkind to migrants. I don’t take photos with random people when traveling. lol no ma’am. They make it seem like I’m being rude because I don’t want to stop and talk about my job, my life and all that bs or take a picture. Bro, I’m not taking a photo in America with a stranger, why would I do it in Thailand? I don’t talk to strangers in America, why would I do it in Mexico? And before anyone says “you can’t make friends…” if the first thing you ask me or anyone is “what do you do for a living?” you don’t want to get to know me and this isn’t a date so why do you really care? You want to know about me and my about me can be found in my resume. If you want to get to know someone or me, ask what music I like. I don’t like small talk. Lol Enough rambling!! I love the new loook! Loving the artistry around the eyes and the two fronts! And as usual your hair looks thick and lush!

Our dollars are so valuable, please spend wisely!! I am highly interested in traveling safely as a black woman and I recently chose Cartegena, Colombia 🇨🇴 after watching manyyyy vlogs of black women who went and had a great time. The only time I felt uncomfortable is when I'm being sold something unsolicited but I had to calm my anger and realize their economy depends on travelers... great video Mayowa!!!

I never heard that Switzerland was a safe place for black women. This is news to me. Wow I did not know that some black women are okay with people touching their hair and being picked at like some kind of animal. However, I do see that beautiful model walking down streets of different countries. I did not think to make that connection of treating her like some kind of creature. Thank you for the insight. I have always heard bad bad things about Morocco. Never would visit. Thank you Mayowa😊

My Black aunt and her family live near Zurich, I have been vacationing in the summer growing up, Switzerland is ABSOLUTELY not a safe place for Black women to travel alone or with other Black people. I'm not saying dont do it, I'm just saying the country isnt Black-friendly. My aunt and her children have so much trauma to deal with, way more than my siblings and me, who grew up in the already racist South of France.

We have to remember that some of these countries (like Morocco) likely have their own colorism issues which make being a dark skinned woman (don't know what your friend looks like) more difficult. And this baffles me esp in the Middle East (where I have travelled several times) because the native population could be every color in the rainbow, from blonde and blue-eyed to dark-skinned. So there's no reason they should be weird toward us. Also, a Black American friend visited me once when I was working in Palestine, a place where people are generally cool, and I had few issues, probably because I often (unintentionally) present as male. But my friend is gorgeous, long braids and is very curvaceous, and for sure had people touching her hair and staring at her body. I loudly put some folks in their place once when they were making her feel uncomfortable. We were in a very crowded place and there was literally a small group forming around her SMH

Just to remind black people that yes it is dangerous out here but we are not trespassing here on earth. We have a right to be here, earth is our home just like any other humanbeing. We can't just sit at home and fear travelling because others are making it difficult for us. That is exactly what they want. As long as we are aware of the attitudes of people towards us and protect ourselves the best way we can, then let's live. I agree with the photo issues and the luring into dangerous situations though, that is a sick trick! We need to be extra careful! To be black in this world means our navigation has to be different. We cannot afford to take anything for granted. We need to play a mentally strong game. May we always be protected!

Unfortunately Morocco is not a nice place for black people. Being Moroccan from a mixed family there it’s obviously so violent toward the black side of the family. I’ve watched a few of those videos of people taking photos of black tourists. What people in the comments say is that they show these pictures to their families to brag about how “well traveled” and “cultured” they are. Now, how true this is or how common it is I don’t know. (Also using a random person to show that you’re cultured is kinda weird. It’s giving unintentional racism.)

Yes! Thank you for this. The touchy-feely videos, especially of the young woman in Turkey made my skin crawl. I used to feel that way when influencers were plugging South Korea. I'm a Gen-Xer, and our generation was really the one fresh out of time that segregation ended (for all of the "it was so long ago folks). We were all in there together but even towards the end of elementary school in the late 1970s/early 80s, I had experiences where I felt like a zoo animal. The kids would crowd all around me and freakin' pet me and pull at my hair and clothing. So, I've never felt seen or appreciated by those videos. And if you check out channels like Kenganda and others, you hear the horror stories about how the sisters on the continent are treated in places like Morrocco and Dubai. Why would I want to be treated like a "wealthy Westerner" or whatever, when African sisters are treated like s**t? It just never felt right. This is a serious PSA.

Firstly, I'm glad you're back and doing ok! Secondly, I feel like some of this travel propaganda kinda leans into the desire for some black people who don't necessarily love their blackness to be seen or treated as an "exotic" sight. In America and in black majority countries, being unambiguously black isn't pedestalized, but in majority "other" countries, all of a sudden those features are attracting a ton of attention and being gauked at. This is not a healthy mindset, but you can tell from some of those videos that some people get off on being fawned over by white people 😒

10:41 Too stunned to speak is exactly how I have felt. In Europe, no matter where I went, I felt like I had a target on my back for sexual harassment to the point of having a very near miss in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 2019. I was supposed to go to Italy a few days later, but I was too shaken to continue. On a positive note, I'm definitely returning to Taipei and Ulaanbaatar next year. In Ulaanbaatar, I was treated with respect, my skin tone was genuinely complimented, several women told me how much they wish they had curly hair. It felt like the people I met were untainted by negative perceptions of Black women.

Any woman traveling alone is taking a chance regardless of color. I traveled with my mom many decades ago. No problems anywhere. There were parts of the world where they had never see Black people. People stared sometimes just the way we stared at white people in our all Black neighborhood. Who cares. We had fun. However, if you get sick, you will need someone to take care of you. Even if you speak the language, communicating with doctors and nurses can be nearly impossible if you get sick. You need to have someone there to arrange for you to get home. Another thing, you have a car accident in another country and end up in jail even if it’s not your fault. You’ll need help getting out of there. Don’t get me started on sexual harassment and worse. Ladies travel with someone or stay home.

I am an avid traveler and I am also 6ft 1 and thin so I am used to getting looked at but I do not consent to random photos and certainly anyone touching me. Saying that having an insight into the country's treatment of darker skin people that informs if I go there and how I move. Australia and New Zealand are no's for me as are Dominican Republic, Israel and a few others. Even here in the States there are some places I will not go, mostly the South and Arizona. I admit as an immigrant in the US of 30 years I did have the idea that black Americans had to be the problem as I was able to make my moves. But it was explained to me by an older black lady that the generational trauma experienced in the US is unequalled globally, maybe apartheid South Africa. Your look is beautiful.

This video spoke to my soul so much. First off GLAD YOU'RE OK! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Second living in Italy I laugh when people assume black people are loved and wanted here. Just because you have great time on vacation doesn't mean the long term reality fits. I have quite a few black Italian friends and they're starting discussions and open dialogues on racism and so many pertinent topics that their parents really couldn't get into (for many reasons). I've found my network of people I love dearly but we need to understand that systemic racism has helped MANY economies. And it's hard for people to let go.

Most people are just curious, sometimes you will never know what people truly think and feel about you. Pay attention to how the majority of society feels about black people especially black women and you don’t need to look any further. If someone is treating you nice or well, you should know that if you are being nice to these people they really have no actual reason to rude to you. In every country, the black people who are from that country they are normally not liked much at all. The global society is very anti-black just understand that.
